The second featherboard is not the best idea..... I was just trying to make the whole setup safer and you are right. The idea is to ifnd a way to keep my hands away from the blade and the push block works well for that. The rest of the setup could use some refinement...... -------- Jake Schultz - curator, Newport Way Air Museum (OK, it's just my home) Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=377414#377414 ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 05:28:43 AM PST US From: "Greg Cardinal" Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: flying wire sizes The plans call for 3/32. Theyre Quaker Oats though and the box is of the modern design so on second thought Could probably find some original ones on Ebay though. All kidding aside, Im going to make two balsa half rounds or corner moldings and glue them in there with the faces along the axis which should allow a pretty tight seal. Thanks for all the ideas as usual! Er, that is- we continue to have Jim here on the list as a builder and encourager ;o) So Jim, how about a building report on the "Chicken Camper"? Or are you calling it the "Flying Henhouse"? It WAS amazing! And I believe what happened went way beyond just someone selling a Pietenpol project. Or about it being a statement about ME. Crowdfunding or whatever, this is an amazing group. I have thought a few times about mentioning it again here on the list. Mainly because there are a lot of new folks here that weren't around when all that happened. And I think we sometimes forget, or maybe don't even realize..... I've thought about a couple names for it (The People's Piet....The Miracle..., etc) but everything I can come up with to show what it means to me is....well, pretty hokey. Progress? Actually, there's been more progress in the last year than in the previous 5 yrs! Tail surfaces are covered and mostly ready for paint. The vertical stab is painted. A LOT of little piddly details have been finished up in the last few months. Half of the leading edge 1/16" ply needed to be finished up and I FINALLY got that on. Sanding and varnishing the wings are finally done. I finally gave up on my silly idea of TIG welding a tank (built 2 aluminum/leady tanks and finally gave up) and have gone back to the tank I built from thin galvanized steel 8 years ago. Recently got a batch of ProSeal (that Flamemaster stuff actually) to finish sealing it up. And just a LOT of little things..... It will be a while yet before she flys but it's getting a lot closer than in the 5-6 years leading up to 2010. I do believe one of my main motivators has been some of the new Piets that have flown....I'm alwsays so proud when I read all the "First Flight" reports! And what an experience when I get to visit people on this list when I travel! The great Georgia "Big Piet" team, Oscar Z, Harvey, Rick H, Larry W, Mike C, Cliffy, Jack P, John R, Gary B, Tom T, Bill C, and the list goes on and on... What an experience that has been for me! You can be sure of one thing...I NEVER walk into the workshop without thinking about how close I came to NOT having MY project...and how the goodness of a lot of special people made a HUGE difference for me. Life just doesn't give gifts like that too often..... Thank you. Jim in Pryor > >By the way, nowadays they have a word for the phenomenon that occurred. it's called "crowdfunding". He later remarked that reading the e mails and overwhelming group support and thought that if he actually did buy the Markle Mania Special, that just like in the Frankenstein movie. When the towns people took up against the evil Dr. Frankenstein and marched up the mountain road with Pitch forks, torches, axes and other implements of destruction towards the castle to end the rein of the evil Dr. Frankenstein. He thought the same would happen to him if he purchased it, so rather than experiencing the wrath of the angry Piet people, he decided to buy a share or 2 and join the group of supporters. Although I do not remember that persons name, I sure hope he's still part of us and is flying his own Piet. I thought it was a great analogy by just one of the special people involved in the Markle Mania Miracle. Some gave more than others, but the size of the gift was secondary to the actual point of helping out a friend in a tough time. The awesomeness of this group of people is what keeps me going back to Brodhead each year. The first time I went in 2009, it was to see the airplanes. But each visit after that was to see the people behind the planes whom are now friends. And I can't wait to see everyone in 2 weeks even if it is a 980 mile drive (one way).
