If you qualify, this is an opportunity to learn some additional skills that could apply to building a Pietenpol. The list of High Demand Jobs is pretty extensive. Just Google VRAP if you want more information. Congress passed, and the President has signed into law, the VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011. Included in this new law is the Veterans Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP). VRAP offers up to 12 months of training assistance to unemployed Veterans. The VRAP offers 12 months of training assistance to Veterans who: Are at least 35 but no more than 60 years old Are unemployed on the date of application Received an other than dishonorable discharge Are not be eligible for any other VA education benefit program (e.g.: the Post-9/11 GI Bill, Montgomery GI Bill, Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Assistance) Are not in receipt of VA compensation due to unemployability Are not enrolled in a federal or state job training program The program is limited to 45,000 participants from July 1, 2012, through September 30, 2012, and 54,000 participants from October 1, 2012, through March 31, 2014. Participants may receive up to 12 months of assistance equal to the monthly full-time payment rate under the Montgomery GI BillActive Duty program (currently $1,473 per month). DOL will offer employment assistance to every Veteran who participates upon completion of the program. Participants must be enrolled in a VA approved program of education offered by a community college or technical school. The program must lead to an Associate Degree, Non-College Degree, or a Certificate, and train the Veteran for a high demand occupation. http://benefits.va.gov/vow/docs/VRAP_High_Demand.pdf -------- John Francis Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=379466#379466

I don't know if this would apply, or if there are any eligible folks out there with ties to NE Ohio, but the community college where I teach ( Stark State College of Technology) has several programs that would definitely qualify - advanced energy systems technologies (we have a joint fuel cells research program with Rolls Royce on campus) and an accelerated certificate in welding (spurred by the needs of the local oil boom) are two that come to mind. There are others, like an environmental healthy & safety program and a first responders program (fire fighting & EMS) that also come to mind. Subject: Kevin Purtee Update 7/29/2012
    From: "IT Girl" <shlizbth@gmail.com>
As most of you have already seen Kevin is to the point in his recovery that he actually asked for his computer. Here is what you haven't seen from the last 36+ hours since my last update: Kevins bowel functions have returned to normal - kind of - he is farting frequently He is able to stand, bear height on both legs, and shuffle around with a walker. In my last update on 7/27 he was barely able to tolerate standing for more than a minute or so. So when I tell you that he shuffled into the bathroom, showered, and later in the day shuffled back in to stand and shave, it is nothing short of amazing in my estimation. All IV fluids have been discontinued, and he is tolerating pain and managing it with oral medications. We are still working on getting him well enough to travel home, so we anticipate being here several more days. Thank you so much for your kind thoughts and prayers. -------- Shelley Tumino IT Girl wife of "Axel" NX899KP DO NOT ARCHIVE Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=379476#379476

(I a m convinced I'll part with something than realize I'll need it for my own b uild.)- However, I will offer my services...anything you may need fabrica ted, machined, welded, cut, etc, let me know.- Especially if you you need something custom made or...modified!- (Come awn now!) - Feel free to contact me directly. It's great to hear from you Kevin. I wish you continued progress and look forward to your complete recovery. Not a day goes by that I don't think of you and so appreciate the hints you share and the opportunity to have used FBG in my build. I think back to CC22 and the way you opened her up and let me take lots of pix. Well, my Piet is not wired and plumbed and almost ready to fire up the Corvair on the fuselage, thanks to you. I am attaching a memory for you... yep it was a cold day in Texas and you were departing from Gilmer (JXI) and heading south (Jan. 2010). Your first long xcountry, as I recall, if preparation for Brodhead the following summer. Needless to say, not hot here now, so I'll keep it warm until you return...soon, I hope. Kevin, I just returned home from an extended trip which included Brodhead. It was a pleasure to meet you there for the first time and to see your airplane. It was also a shock to see on the list that you had had an accident. I am so glad that you are doing well and on the mend. Hang in there and keep a positive attitude as I know you will. All, The below message is from fellow builder, Mike Weaver, recently deployed to Afghanistan. Mike was a 'digest' reader, until his deployment, and claimed to have limited internet skills. I cry BULLS__T! as Mike is a computer technician on UAV's! During a recent sortee to his house, with the esteemed Chris Tracy, Mike confessed that he had volunteered for deployment, as he is nearing the end of his career. He said that, when wearing his uniform in town, he would often be confronted by strangers who wished to express their gratitude. He felt guilty, as, in his words, ".the credit should go to those in harm's way.." He'll be the first to admit that his particular duty at Kandahar is somewhat secure, though it appears as though there is still danger. Mike was the host of our first official 'West Coast Piet Gathering,' in '09m, pictured here with his head partially covered by the sign. He does some of the most beautiful wood work I have seen, saying that there is nothing he enjoys more than sanding wood! Every single piece is well sanded and varnished with several coats! Mike has a beautiful wife and family at home, and I am sure there are at least a dozen things he would prefer to be doing right now, but instead he volunteers for deployment! Such are the decisions made by men and women of character. His personal email is below, if you wish to send him a greeting.or, I will forward anything posted on the list. It is hard to write to everybody individually so this what you get, something already sent to others. Too bad just enjoy that I have written to you. I had fun writing it. And it was exciting living it. It sounds more dangerous than it is really, so don't let it scare you. I am safe here, well as safe as a person can be in a war zone. Just kidding, take it easy, I'm safe. I have to get back to work. Love Mike It has been an amazing experience so far. That is not to say it is easy being here. I would much rather be at home, this is much harder than I imagined it would be. But I am proud to be doing this, however I look forward to the end. It is too far way for me to even think about. The ducking and diving is part of life here. It does not happen every day. Our procedures are somewhat similar to the training we receive when we do our ATSO exercises at home station. I did not realize this until my first attack. I heard the warning tone, but initially I thought what is that. When all the folks around me start hitting the deck, I came to realize that, oh we are under attack. So I followed suit, hit the ground and after 2 minutes went to the nearest bunker. The important difference is that the bunkers here are not marked with red tape and cones. Fortunately they are a bit more substantial. They are actually made of reinforced concrete, so it will protect you during an actual attack. Yesterday I experienced my second attack. I would like to give you some details, but I get some of my info off SIPR, so it is classified. It would not be good for me to repeat it on NIPR. But I will tell you the part I think is the coolest. We were in lock down for almost 3 hours yesterday. I was out on the ramp near the PAX terminal. I went there to participate in a Dignified Transfer of two soldiers. The cool part for me was that, I spent some of the time bunkered down in a building called the TLS. TLS stands for Taliban's Last Stand. This region is the home of the Taliban. It is considered their spiritual homeland, that is part of the reason we have so much trouble with them in the Kandahar area. They would love to get us out of here, but to bad for them. Anyway, the TLS is the building that was their refuge and last fighting position when we took them out. The building sustained battle damage, but some repairs were made and today it functions as our PAX terminal. There I was taking refuge in the TLS while they were shooting rockets at us. How about that for a story. That is just too cool. I think this is surreal. Have a good weekend all. Sleep well at night I am here with my team defending your freedom and safety! Am I full of it or what? I maybe over the top with this stuff but this is a truly great experience for me that I am glad to be part of. If you think you would like to take a deployment and experience it for yourself, I recommend it! YOU WANT THE TRUTH, YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH! Yes, you're right I am full of it. I'm sorry, just having a little fun. Maybe the heat is getting to me. I miss you all, tell everybody I said hi. Mike

Just for reference, FAR Part 23.925 requires a 9 inch prop clearance for conventional gear aircraft with the aircraft in level flight attitude or takeoff attitude (whichever is most critical) and at max gross weight. Also says that there must be a positive clearance with the most critical gear suspension collapsed (i.e. broken bungees) and a flat tire on the same side. I know we don't have to conform to Part 23 but, like AC 43-13, it's a darn good place to find useful information. Like the guidance from Uncle Tony, ignore it at your peril. From: "FandS_Piet" <fkim79@gmail.com>
Hey Guys, I am wondering if it is best or common practice to use 1x19 wire for the tail bracing. Thats what I want to use but it only seems to be available in 1/16th which doesnt give me a warm fuzzy feeling, and 1/8th which I think is too big. Im also worried about wrapping it around the thimble, if it is possible? Also turn buckle size. Long or short, or does it not matter? Are there any areas where the shorter turnbuckles dont allow for enough adjustment? I want to make up a "fuel measuring stick" to physically confirm fuel levels. I'd like it to be some material which makes it easy to tell where the fuel level is, and which I can permanently mark. Wood is great, but it soaks up the fuel and stinks up any compartment it is stored in. I was wondering if anyone had any clever ideas for a material which is fuel resistant, can be marked, will show the fuel level yet won't soak up the fuel and smell. ?? Douwe Do not archive

Hi Fred, You will have a hard time bending 1X19 cable around a thimble. You can use swaged fittings and eliminate the thimble and nicopress sleeve. Finding someone with proper swaging tools can be a problem. 7X19 cable and nicopress fittings are common and acceptable. The tail bracing cables do their job in turbulent prop wash and they tend to vibrate. 1/16" cable wouldn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling either. Hello Fred, I had the same questions awhile back and with some advice from Bill Church and Mike Cuy, I went with 3/32 wire and the 130-16s turnbuckle assembly and it worked out perfect. I ordered everything from aircraft spruce including the wire cutters and swagger. If you want the part #s for the cutter and swagger email me at larryvangerven@hotmail.com Take care Larry V Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=379532#379532

David from Viking Packing tells me that he e-mailed me some photos, but they went to my work e-mail, which I currently do not have access to. Douwe I think black acetal rod would work. You might have to sand it to make a matt finish so the gas would show. A piece of nylon airbrake line might work. Available at most auto parts stores. It is shiny but would dull up good with some 400 wet or dry. Years ago when I was involved on a club with a C120 we made one from a small glass tube. Insert in tank put your finger over the end. To set it up started with empty tank added fuel 1 gal at a time dipped the tube for a measurment. When that was done taped off every other segment hit it with a sandblaster to etch the glass. Hi Greg, I believe the Last Original uses 1/16" cable. 1/16" is rated at 940lbs, if you figure 4 on each side, that seems allot tougher than the wood it is holding up(and down).
