Evening all,

went ahead and snatched it up, figuring that some Corvaircrafter (or small

Larry,
I for one am sad to see you take leave from the list. Who is going to keep
us in line? Egads are we expected to self-police?
Have fun sir. We are with you in spirit and I suspect would all like to be
doing the same thing. See you next year at Brodhead with the Skyscout.

Dan,
Did you use the small struts from Carlson Aircraft? And, what did you
figure for safe thread depth of the J3 forks? I couldn't find a minimum
thread depth chart for steel bolts into aluminum. A typical rule of thumb
for steel-in-steel is one thread diameter minimum to match the full
strength of the bolt. I would assume steel-in-aluminum to be more than
that since aluminum isn't quite as strong as steel. Aluminum is also
subject to fatigue over the long haul, so overkill would be good here.

Hey Dan,
During your final assembly, did you actually have to make adjustments to all 4
forks? I'm wondering if you could be really careful with all the strut lengths
and maybe only need to make adjustments to the rear struts?
Am I thinking right or is adjustment on all 4 absolutely necessary? I would like
to avoid buying those $80 fittings if their not going to get much use....
Your (or anyone's!) thoughts?

Use your front struts to set your dihedral if you have any and rears for washout.
You can also correct a heavy wing issue with the rear strut adjustment. I
have a three piece wing and have dihedral.

This is purely fluff. My first steel order came today, and it's kinda funny: I
now believe I will finish and fly my Piet.
I can actually buy aircraft grade spruce locally. So ordering that was a no brainer.
But steel... that is a foreign language. I have never worked with steel,
so it is a new and foreign substance, and while I have built complex things like
3 axis mills and such from scratch, from my own design, it was out of aluminum
80/20 struts that bolted together.
This stuff here requires welding... a new skill. I am completely comfortable cutting,
gluing, and working with wood in every way. Steel.... well, epoxy doesn't
hold as well on steel. so, I gotta learn to weld. No biggie: I got the Tin
man 4130 2 tape set to watch (years ago) and some practice pieces from ACS, so
I'm good to go there.
But just knowing I figured out what to order (gauge vs decimal) and getting it
here seemed to be a challenge for me. Dunno if anyone else had that kinda mental
block, but it was really a hurdle for me for some odd reason.
Just to show you how different we all can be: A friend of mine from church just
retired as a city cop. He told me once that he had a side business welding tanks
and such for wineries in the central valley of CA where we live. I'm thinking
a small outfit where he travels and does this small business.
So I called him yesterday to let him know I wanted to take him up on borrowing
his gas welding set up as my steel would arrive soon. He tells me to come by his
'shop'. This feller has a full blown CNC machining/welding/metal shop! Had
NO idea. He had offered to help me with anything I needed to finish the plane.
While I feel I can do the initial welding, I think the LG and the Motor mounts
would be helpful to have him along...
So, (and here's the point), he tells me "I would be SO uncomfortable working with
wood. Completely out of my element. I am so uncomfortable with wood I would
never even try working with it..."
Go figure: COMPLETELY opposite of me.
That's why we have 5 fingers on a hand: each serves it's purpose.
Now, where's that torch...

Dear Curmudgeon,
Please give a little more info on the Sky Scout project! Since I am now abo
ut 1/2 way through building one (fuselage, tail sections, center section, 1/
2 the wing and landing gear and tail wheel done). I plan on getti
ng the other half of the wing done this fall, then the struts and rigging.
Have the A65 and prop. All built strictly to plans, including the landing g
ear. Even the A65 is OK since the plans came with t the mount drawings!
All Sky Scout guys should hang together, we certainly are a minority!
