Gary, great thoughts, well said! Jack Textor DSM NX1929T do not archive _____ From: owner-pietenpol-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-pietenpol-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Gary Boothe Sent: Wednesday, August 29, 2012 9:15 PM Subject: Pietenpol-List: "...you must be proud!" Jack (et al), I've been thinking about this since you used that word. My brain fires slowly, which is why the Pietenpol is the perfect/only plane for me! Funny, but I guess I really don't feel 'proud'.. Building airplanes is all I have ever really wanted to do, since my young adult-hood. Life didn't allow that to happen until recently, but the question always in my mind was, "Am I good enough?" "Can I really do it?" The feeling that has been most relative is.Relief! I was relieved when my Corvair started up the first time! I was relieved when my Dan Helsper/PF Beck assisted, hand carved prop didn't fly off into the neighbor's living room window! I was relieved when my guestimates for cabane slants and engine mount length brought the W&B right where it needs to be! I was relieved when test pilot, Roy Richardson, reported good flying characteristics! I was relieved that the tribute to my father appeared to have been a success! And I haven't even flown it yet! That'll just be icing, because, more than anything, he was a builder of things. .but all that has been replaced with an incredible sense of humility. I am humbled by all the incredible work that I see fellow builders doing. I am humbled by the steady stream of looki-lews coming thru my hangar doors.then I go see their amazing work. I am humbled by a local P51 owner/pilot, standing next to me, watching the first take off, and he's more excited than I am (I'm just relieved!). I am humbled when our own godfather, who's fantastic video most of us had purchased in our early days of excitement, giving us our first, real glimpse into the Pietenpol World, sends ME a personal note of congratulations. I am humbled when one of our fellow builder/pilots, a bona-fide national freakin' hero, calls ME to congratulate me. I am humbled by the camaraderie of this entire group, and their endless generosity. No, I guess 'proud' is not the word for how I feel about my plane, though I know that's not exactly what you meant. Thank you! The first couple pictures gives you a little idea on my custom tail wheel s et up. The last two pictures shows that I machined down the bolt head to a thinner size, drilled out the length of the bolt and cross drilled it and t he nut for the cotter pin.- The tail assembly is very light weight. 4" wh eel from ACS. I bent the "A" arm to align the spring better and to be paral lel with the ground while sitting. Extensive details and procedures explained in my HINT Video.- I have all the dimensional prints as well...if interested. Not flight tested...yet. Hans, do you have a web site for Oracover? In a message dated 8/30/2012 9:47:45 A.M. Just like a model airplane. The model airplane market must be drying up for them, to start marketing to the experimental market. Who wants to be the first to try this ? FYI, I do not endorse this in anyway, just thought the information is interesting. Hans NX15KV (http://www.matronics.com/Navigator?Pietenpol-List) (http://www.matronics.com/contribution)

I ran my hinge all the way up so that the "knuckle" was even with the top of the capstrip. I did all this after the aileron was cut away from the wing. Yes, the filler capstrip was shaped so that the hinge would lie flat. The filler capstrip was moved forward so that the top-forward edge was even with the front of the sloped side of the aileron spar. Clear as mud? Subject: Full Tail Wheel Disclosure! (Almost...)
Here are a few more details on my tail wheel mods.: - I never did like the idea of squishing the tubes on the tail wheel "A" arm where they attach to the fuselage brackets.- I did not like the fact that this now squished, thin area-gets a bolt brazed to-it, uses a cotter p in-and has to somehow handle the side loads put on it.- Further more, I did not like the idea of having-four holes drilled into the lower longer on, two horizontally and-two vertically, in very, very close proximity to each other. (Hole edge spacing) - So, I made my tube ends like I did for the control sticks. (Picture1 and 2) - -Picture 3 shows my template and brackets made to go around the longeron, and have two bolts run all the way through. - Picture 4 shows these brackets in place on the fuselage. Plywood is between the soft spruce and brackets. - Picture 5 shows how the "A" arm fits into these brackets. - My tubes are 5/8" .049" wall. - Flight test will show if all this was worth the effort... - Michael Perez Pietenpol HINT Videos Karetaker Aero www.karetakeraero.com

On thing about the a-arm attachment is that the axes of the pivoting bolts do not line up naturally. The squished tube solution mitigates this somewhat because the attachment is "single point" on each side. It seems your solution might introduce some binding unless you made some effort to line up the bolt axes, but perhaps the angular travel is not enough to substantially exercise that pivot. I am curious to know how that works out. I do like that you have the attach point away from the truss junction. The bolting of of that fitting seemed a bit clunky. Gary=3B Thank you for expressing many of the same things that I felt. Although I d idn't build Scout=2C I re-built some of the parts and assemblies and then s uccessfully test-flew the airplane after the rebuild. I had many of those same feelings when I could tell Corky (the original builder) how wonderful an airplane he built=2C and mean it sincerely and from the bottom of my hea rt. I think I silently thank him for building such a trusty machine every time I take the controls and watch the ground fall away under me and Scout. There are so many things on the airplane that I have tweaked=2C customized =2C adapted=2C built=2C rebuilt- and felt that same sense of relief when fl ight testing proved them to be functional and reliable=2C even if not elega nt. And yes=2C it was the most tremendous feeling when I saw an email from Mike Cuy in my inbox shortly after Scout took to the air after the rebuild. No t that I revere him or his airplane=2C or have a special place in our home DVD/VCR library for "The Video" (but I do)- it's just that Mikee's video an d his encouragement have put so many of our dreams to flight that it's very special when he pats you on the back. do not archive Oscar Zuniga Air Camper NX41CC Medford=2C OR
