Oscar, I'll bet you're exactly right. I'm sure I'm erring on the side of
caution and keeping things fast right now, especially as there is so much
runway in front of me!
Only have about ten landings under my belt so far because my engine builder
doesn't want me to do too many climb outs with the newly built motor for the
first five hours, so I'm limiting myself to two or three per flight.

For those of you still undecided about coming to corvair college #24,
time is running out to register.
I expect that Ken Pavlou will cut off registration no later than Tuesday
night. Click on
https://corvaircollege.wufoo.com/forms/corvair-college-24-registration/
to register.
For us Pietenpol fans, I expect at least 5 Pietenpols to show up as well
as a large number of KR-2's, Zenairs, Sonex and maybe some others. I
realy think that we will have the largest gathering of corvair powered
planes ever in one place.
Look forward to seeing you here.

John, I can't find the ELT you're talking about ($160) in the ACS list.
All the ELTs I could find are in the $1100-up range. Could you give me
the ACS part number for the one you bought? (Future NX-10003) Chuck

Hi Dan,
I don't believe the 406 is required yet. I just had to replace the one
in my Cub and was still able to get the old one from ACS for about $160.
Like Mikee, I don't have on in 503R either.

I flew the Piet up to Evergreen, Al (KGZH) to the SERFI FLY-IN. I had a friend
fly up from Orlando with his immaculate J-3 Cub. He flew up there with me. Friday
was a beautiful day. Saturday the weather went sour with 800 foot ceilings
and winds at 15 to 20 gusting to 25 and high temperature for the day was about
55 degrees. We drove up there Saturday but most had left. I didn't go back this
morning(Sunday) even though the weather has improved. I had hoped to get my
Piet judged but that was not to be. The attendance was down from previous years.
Maybe the economy or forecast of the kruddy weather.

I believe Canada has rescinded its 406 mandate. There was a big flap about it
a couple of years ago but the latest from the Canadian counterpart to the FAA
is that it is on hold pending further review. The FCC is working to ban all 121.5
ELT transmitters, so far unsuccessfully. Could change any time.
Whether you decide to get a 406 ELT depends on your risk tolerance and exposure.
There's also the issue of whether the US will mandate the 406 method or use
MEOSAT. Think I'm going to roll the dice with a cheap 406 and be done with it.

The 50 mile radius is only for training operations. If you're flying a two seat
aircraft without an ELT you are almost certainly illegal:

I found this explanation from another site that explains it well:
You can fly without an ELT if you have a single seat airplane or if you stay within
50 miles of where the aircraft is based. You're legal if you install a 121.5
ELT. The issue is that the satellites are not monitoring that freq, so your
121.5 ELT doesn't have the utility it once did. You are then relying on other
aircraft to hear your ELT and/or the CAP cadets to find you.

Jack; are you going to use a threaded cap on it? If so, what size is the bung
(threaded stub), inside and outside diameter and threads? There are a number
of caps that might fit. Is this a stock J-3 setup, with the float rod sticking
up through the cap?

Subject: | Re: New Pietenpol Builder |
Hi Todd!
First, welcome to the group! I too am a bit on the large size for the Piet, and
yet after YEARS of searching for the "Perfect" design for my size, and still
qualify for the Light Sport designation, I decided to make the Piet fit me (at
the time I started the project i was 250lbs and 6'4") instead of vice versa.
One of the great things about the Piet is the fact it is such a solid design.
It can stand a tweak here and there and still be a good flying stable plane.
Now, what I am about to post is what I am doing, and I can't prove any of the modifications
will prove anything but an estimated guess that it will be a better
fit for me, so be forewarned!
I drew the fuse in my CAD program to insure all dimensions matched and there was
no surprises as to what one change would do to another measurement. I exported
the drawings to a CNC program and punched my fuse jig out on a CNC router so
it would be accurate.
Here's what I did to the fuse: 26" wide from nose to the back of the pilot seat;
I dropped the bottom of the fuse 2" deeper to keep me from popping out of the
fuse like a jack in the box; I lengthened the nose of the fuse by 2" (I am building
he long fuse version so this added 2" to the nose of that plan); I moved
the top of the pilot seat back 2" further aft so my face wasn't smashed into
the instrument panel; I am using the Riblett GA 30-613.5 airfoil which is a
full 6" tall at the front spar and about 5.5 at the rear (I forget exact dimensions
off the top of my head) which allows me to have a deeper spar to handle
extra weight (1320 for LSA) and to lengthen the wing by 4' (2 feet or two bays
on each wing tip); and I will move the strut connections to the wing out one
bay to compensate for the added 2 feet on each side. I also stretched the rear
turtle deck top by 1", for a total "butt to top of turtle deck" addition of 3"
total. This was about right for me. The instrument panel will stay original
height, after I made it 1" taller too proved too tall for me to see over. Didn't
need the extra height on the front of the plane, just the part where I sit!
I will be using the Corvair conversion for a full 100 hp engine.
Some thoughts on the fuse widening: probably not absolutely necessary, as I think
the 24" wide all the way to the pilot seat back would be roomy enough now that
I have the fuse framed up, but with a warm jacked to winter flying probably
will be more comfy in my fuse.
The Riblett GA-30-612 and GA-30-613.5 have been discussed on this group quite a
bit. The 612 airfoil is being built by a few folks here, and I am not sure if
anyone besides me is using the 613.5 airfoil. Here's why I chose this airfoil
for MY project: I spoke to Harry Riblett by phone a couple of years or so ago
and explained my typical summer flying condition in the summer... 95-105 degrees.
My 240-250 pounds and the light density altitude, plus my desire to have
full use of the 1320 lbs of legal LSA load meant the FC-10 Piet airfoil was not
a great choice for ME and my project. He suggested that the GA-30-613.5 ("it's
not a '613.5' " he chastised me... "...it's the GA-30-613.5"... Ok Mr. Riblett!)
would be the better choice for my needs. Now, several are building the GA-30-612
and Piety Lowell here was the pioneer on the Piet with this airfoil.
He's flown the same plane with a traditional French Curve - 10 airfoil and the
GA-30-612. He reported better flying numbers with the 612 (forgive me Mr. Riblett!)
even though that wing was chopped by 2 feet versus the original wing with
the FC-10.
The extra depth of the 613.5 (a 13.5% to chord thickness) will allow a deeper spar,
and added strength for the extra 4' of wing I plan to add.
So, for those reading this that are puritans about the design, I will not be flying
a real Piet when I finish this project. But, I WILL be flying a plane that
I can fit comfortably into for reasonable amounts of time.
Hope this helps as you begin he exciting journey of building your dream! Again,
welcome to the family.

Subject: | Re: corvair college #24 registration |
Hi P.F.
I think I was probably one of the first to register. I plan to there with
my completed engine. I have repaired several small issues that surfaced
when I ran it at Roy's last year. Just need to set the timing. Looking
forward to seeing you and some of the people I've met a previous colleges.

I'm thinking the inspection rings put into the covering is the modern day equivalent
to this part.

Douwe, I know you must have posted this recently, but what engine are you using?
The 65 or a Corvair...?
