cap up to the cowl (the more likely possibility).

blade has teeth cut into it with its corresponding thread pitch. You just put
the teeth of each blade up to your threaded part till you find one that fits,
then read the thread pitch off the blade and voila. At any rate, you may need
to fabricate something that threads onto your tank neck. Quarter-turn filler
necks and caps are easy to come by... I got one from Summit Racing to build
the aluminum smoke oil tank that I have for Scout (still not installed). It
uses a spring-loaded and gasketed radiator type cap on it. They sell all the
parts needed to fabricate your own fuel or oil tank and there are several filler
necks and caps available. Or, you can cut the threaded part off your neck
and weld on a new piece that has the quarter-turn lock on the top end.

Jack it looks like maybe 1 1/2" pipe threads. The link below has all the specs
on pipe threads. A trip to the hardware store can confirm my thought. A hardware
store pipe cap may not be very pretty but at least you will know for sure if
it fits.

All,
I would like any comments on my proposed Piet fuselage modifications. I
plan to build a steel tube fuse version using the GN-1 layout, but modified
to provide more pilot room and considerations to CG and tail feather
location.
The planned pilot weight is 210 pound. Planned engine is a Corvair. Note
I plan to widen and deepen the fuselage at the pilot, but my primary concern
is the additional length and where I have added it.
Please see the attached .jpeg and see the revised measurements on the upper
layout showing the new measurement and the amount in inches of what I added
to that bay, i.e. +3, +1, etc.
The resultant overall fuselage length is 178.5"
I would greatly appreciate any constructive comments on my proposed length
mods.
Thanks,

@Larry - We should be worried deeply about not being found. Had I flown another
3 minutes before my engine quit and had a bad arrival in the middle of a huge
cornfield, the SPOT would've been the only way to find me. Time was critical
in getting me help after my incident, BTW. The ELT would have allowed them
to find my body.
@Ken - Excellent point about pressing the "HELP" button on the way down, if you
have time.
There's nothing like experience.

Hi Gang,
We use Spidertracks at work in our single engine cessna 180s. They work similair
to SPOT, but are aviation dedicated, Where SPOT is being marketed to hiker,
hunters and aviation.
It depends what you are willing to pay, they have a feature that will automatically
send the S&R if the unit sense lose of power and stops moving. It is not
g-activated, like an ELT, but should provide similar protection, this feature
is by subscription only.
Basic service is just like SPOT, it leaves a breadcrumb trail every two minutes
and with loss of power/accident should get the CAP close, but will not call out
the troops if you do not press the emergency button. We have added this to
our emegrncy checklist.

Gary,
I flew yesterday, 10-30-12. Got about a little more than an hour in hopping a ride
then some goofing off. Beautiful day out. Was finished about 2pm. perhaps
you were out later than that.
Gotta love the left coast. Year around flying for us.

an extra hookup for that. I just have to do some splicing and soldering. The
instructions for that are included.

Hi Chuck - Some guys build the controls so that you can take out the front stick
and un-hook the pedals. That's an option.
With the exception of a couple of people wanting to see how the airplane flies,
I could have gone forever without controls in the front seat. Makes it easier
to store stuff up there.

Mark,
I like the idea of adding to the pilot pit, the Grega back pit is really small.
I might add 3" to it and only 2" to the front bay, you can add an inch or more
to the engine mount. You may want to make a mock-up of the pilot pit area,
I am somewhat smaller than you and my Grega pit is non too big. If you found the
pit too small even with the 2" or 3" added you could move the diagonal at the
top of the seat aft to get more room.
Also, unless you plan to use a J3 landing gear, you could eliminate the 9 1/2"
bay and run the aft gear leg back to the same place the aft lift strut hits the
lower longeron, like Piet plans.

NX2RN came with front seat controls minus a throttle. So we rigged one up and
my son learned to fly from the front seat of a Piet. No instruments at all.
I think a slip indicator and airspeed would be nice though.
There are good arguments both ways. Easier to remove them than add them later.

I didn't know if we are supposed to glue the ribs onto the spar or just nail them
in place as shown on the plans. Once the fabric is shrunk that should be enough
to hold them in place right? We are getting ready to varnish and I'm thinking
it will be lot easier to varnish the ribs before they are on the spar but
don't want to varnish the areas that will be glued.
Thanks

Subject: | Attatching ribs to spar? |
Fred-- there are lots of ways to do this but I preferred to glue and nail the ribs
to my spars---not required but it gave me assurance
that they weren't going to move around. Technically after you tighten your drag
and anti-drag cables the ribs should not be able
to move anywhere and some guys have done it like this without glue or nails but
for me I just wanted a dab of glue and two nails,
nothing fancy but enough to satisfy me.
I know the weather in PA isn't conducive to this right now but I ended up spraying
my wing with diluted spar varnish (mineral spirits to thin)
on a set of sawhorses on a limestone driveway back when I built my plane and that
worked like a charm. I used a Hudson spray container
or bug sprayer like you'd find at a garden department and I think it was a 1.5,
2.0 gallon plastic one. The varnish gets in all the nooks and
cranies and you have to flip the wing over of course a time or two while drying
so you minimize drips but overall it was a great, fast, and easy
way to do the job. I ended up using Helmsman Quick Dry spar urethane from Lowe's
or Home Depot and thinned a bit more with mineral
spirits so it would spray well. It took three sessions to get the wing coated
like I wanted with some finish sanding around the edges and wing
rib top and bottoms where the fabric was going to lay so the little porcupine bristles
of the wood fibers didn't show.

Hello everyone,
I have just joined the forum and reading the Piet post. I bought a
project looks I believe the fuselage is a GN-1 type or at least it's steel
tube. Supposedly it was assembled at one time but never flew I bought it
out of a shed where it had been for the last 10 years. I'm in the process
of stripping it down. The project came with a Corvair engine which I wold
like to sell. Any idea what it's worth or where would be a good place to
list it?
Thanks,
Jeff

I do not know, but I glue them with epoxy, above and under the spar, even I
put a little piece of wood to fill the gap of the angle.

Welcome Jeff! Send some pics as soon as possible.we would all like to see
your project! I have a Corvair powered Piet that's got more power than it
needs. I love that engine! Curious why you want to sell yours?

I can see a nail or two, or a spot of glue, but even more so than the anti-drag
wires, the rib stitching is not going to let them move ANYWHERE.

Gary,
You just stated my reason more power than it needs. I'm going with a 65 Con
nie I was going to use the AeroVee 80 hp but it doesn't have the torque of t
he 65. Speed is in the wing and 70 is fast enough for me I don't need to bu
rn 7 gph when I can fly at 3.7 gph.
I'll try to upload pictures later on. Thanks for your input look forward to
learning all I can.

Hey all,
I have to make a second fuel gauge that will read the last eight gallons or
so, so I'm not always having to guesstimate. So for those of you making (or
modifying) a wing tank and looking for a drop down fuel gauge set up, ck
this out.
In my search I found these brass site gauges at Mcmaster Carr (go to vented
oil level indicators, then you'll see some straight ones) and they are so
cool I thought I should post them. Lots of guys over the years have
modified ACS versions or made their own, but these are almost ready to go
and very professional looking, and not expensive.
All one needs to do is plug the vent hole at the bottom, make up a little
float/wire set up and you're ready to go. They come in most NPT so they'll
fit fuel tank bungs. I got one and it's all shiny brass and real glass.
really nice. I'm getting a shorter one and modifying the base to accept a
curtis drain valve since that's where I drain water from my tank.

Fred,
I say nail and glue. The wing gains a lot of stiffness when you glue those uprights
to the face of the spar. Many wings use compression struts that hold the
spars square vertically in relation to each other (make sense...?) The Piet
uses a separate compression strut on the top and bottom of the spar. Good setup
but I think it relies a little bit on the stiffness gained from the uprights
that were added to the ribs a little later in the plans. The plywood leading
edge adds lots of stiffness too. Probably not a big deal but just my observation.

Hello,
I am building a straight axle with brakes a la Curmudgeon and Helspar. What is
a good length for the pins that prevent the axle from rolling?
Thx!
