Chuck, I have the front control stick removable. No instruments up front and no
throttle.

I copied what Mike C. did but I used the water based spar varnish and thinn
ed with water. As he did, I used a store bought, hand pumped sprayer, laid
down plastic sheet in the garage and used saw horses.- I have pictures if
interested.

John, the axle pins need to be long enough to allow some vertical movement
for the bungee suspension.- You'll also need enough length to then pass t
hrough whatever method used to hold said pin.- My pins are about 5" long
measured from the bottom of the axle. I have lots of pictures, if intereste
d.

I bought the 6" long one, but then realized, my tank is only a bit over four
inches deep at the back so the extra depth was a waste, especially behind
the passengers head. I'm ordering a 4.5 incher now. Depends on what size
your tank bung is, but you don't need more depth than the tank has.
Did some research and the seals are supposedly fine for all fuels. If you
want a six incher, I'll sell you mine.

Hi Fred,
I used T88 epoxy, stainless nails, and wedges to attach ribs. The nails
were used for clamping pressure while the epoxy cured.
After all the woodwork was completed, I sealed the wood with Poly Fiber's
EV-400 epoxy varnish (and EV-410 epoxy varnish catalyst) thinned with E-500
epoxy reducer. The thinned varnish did penetrate into the wood very well.
I applied three coats with a brush. Although the results were great, it
took quite a bit of time and was a tedius process. By the way, I built a
wing rotator and used it most of the time throughout the wing build
process. It was extremely helpful during the varnish process as well as
covering & painting.
Consider a wing varnish party!!! Beer, brats, music, and a bunch of
friends/relatives. Drips and runs can be sanded out later.
;-)

Greg: Serve something besides beer and the drips probably wouldn't leave runs
to sand out later. 8^]

i plan on teaching my kids how to fly up front, so ill be putting brakes, throttle,
stick and a few instruments. Like others have said, easier to remove if you
change your mind. Also it may be mandatory for a future buyer. I owned a cub
and gave loads of rides in it, simply told folks not to touch anything, and
was never a problem. if its good enough for piper, its good enough for me.

To answer your question directly=2C I have rarely taken passengers up with
the intent of giving them the controls so in that respect=2C the controls d
on't serve a frequent purpose. However=2C I got my Air Camper checkout fly
ing Scout from the front seat (no instruments=2C no brakes=2C no fuel shuto
ff valve=2C no carb heat!) and I have checked out another pilot or two in t
he airplane while I flew front seat and they were in back. I have also flo
wn numerous flights with a buddy where I have flown navigator position in f
ront with him as PIC in back=2C and had him ask me to take the controls whi
le he peeled of a jacket=2C put on a jacket=2C or made other adjustments.
It was handy to have that capability=2C but certainly not something that ha
ppens frequently. I think it heightens the joy and wonder of a first fligh
t if you offer a passenger the opportunity to take the controls and let the
m feel what it's like to control the airplane in flight.
I guess it would be OK to just have a "sterile cockpit" up there=2C but par
t of the appeal of the Air Camper to me is that it has controls up front.
Mine has rudder=2C stick=2C and throttle in front... and I learned to fly i
t with just those essentials plus sight and sound. I like flying it from u
p there=2C too. But yes=2C you could save a couple of pounds by eliminatin
g front cockpit controls.
