Subject: | PLEASE READ - Matronics Email List Fund Raiser During |
November!
Dear Listers,
Each November I hold a PBS-like fund raiser to support the continued operation
and upgrade of the Email List and Fourm Services at Matronics. It's through solely
through the Contributions of List members that these Matronics Lists are
possible.
You have probably noticed that there are no banner ads or pop-up windows on any of the Matronics Lists or related web sites such as the Forums site http://forums.matronics.com , Wiki site http://wiki.matronics.com , or other related pages such as the List Search Engine http://www.matronics.com/search , List Browse http://www.matronics.com/listbrowse , etc. This is because I believe in a List experience that is completely about the sport we all enjoy - namely Airplanes and not about annoying advertisements.
During the month of November I will be sending out List messages every couple of
days reminding everyone that the Fund Raiser is underway. I ask for your patience
and understanding during the Fund Raiser and throughout these regular messages.
The Fund Raiser is only financial support mechanism I have to pay all
of the bills associated with running these lists. Your personal Contribution
counts!
Once again, this year I've got a terrific line up of free gifts to go along with
the various Contribution levels. Most all of these gifts have been provided
by some of the vary members and vendors that you'll find on Matronics Lists and
have been either donated or provided at substantially discounted rates.
This year, these generous people include:
Bob Nuckolls of the AeroElectric Connection http://www.aeroelectric.com
Andy Gold of the Builder's Bookstore http://www.buildersbooks.com
Jon Croke of HomebuiltHELP http://www.homebuilthelp.com
These are very generous guys and I encourage you to visit their respective web
sites. Each one offers a unique and very useful aviation-related product line.
I would like publicly to thank Bob, Andy, and Jon for their generous support
of the Lists again this year!!
Please make your List Contribution using any one of three secure methods including
using a credit card, PayPal, or by personal check. All three methods afford
you the opportunity to select one of this year's free gifts with a qualifying
Contribution amount!!
To make your Contribution, please visit the secure site:
http://www.matronics.com/contribution
I would like to thank everyone in advance for their generous financial AND moral
support over the years!
Thank you for your support!

I copied what Mike C. did but I used the water based spar varnish and thinn
ed with water. As he did, I used a store bought, hand pumped sprayer, laid
down plastic sheet in the garage and used saw horses.- I have pictures if
interested.

John, the axle pins need to be long enough to allow some vertical movement
for the bungee suspension.- You'll also need enough length to then pass t
hrough whatever method used to hold said pin.- My pins are about 5" long
measured from the bottom of the axle. I have lots of pictures, if intereste
d.

I bought the 6" long one, but then realized, my tank is only a bit over fou
r
inches deep at the back so the extra depth was a waste, especially behind
the passengers head.- I'm ordering a 4.5 incher now.- Depends on what s
ize
your tank bung is, but you don't need more depth than the tank has.
Did some research and the seals are supposedly fine for all fuels. If you
want a six incher, I'll sell you mine.

Hi Fred,
I used T88 epoxy, stainless nails, and wedges to attach ribs.- The nails
were used for clamping pressure while the epoxy cured.
After all the woodwork was completed, I sealed the wood with Poly Fiber's
EV-400 epoxy varnish (and EV-410 epoxy varnish catalyst) thinned with E-500
epoxy reducer.- The thinned varnish did penetrate into the wood very well
.
I applied three coats with a brush.- Although the results were great, it
took quite a bit of time and was a tedius process.- By the way, I built a
wing rotator and used it most of the time throughout the wing build
process.- It was extremely helpful during the varnish process as well as
covering & painting.
Consider a wing varnish party!!!- Beer, brats, music, and a bunch of
friends/relatives.- Drips and runs can be sanded out later.

i plan on teaching my kids how to fly up front, so ill be putting brakes, t
hrottle,
stick and a few instruments. Like others have said, easier to remove if you
change your mind. Also it may be mandatory for a future buyer. I owned a cu
b
and gave loads of rides in it, simply told folks not to touch anything, and
was never a problem. if its good enough for piper, its good enough for me.

To answer your question directly=2C I have rarely taken passengers up wit
h
the intent of giving them the controls so in that respect=2C the controls
d
on't serve a frequent purpose.- However=2C I got my Air Camper checkout
fly
ing Scout from the front seat (no instruments=2C no brakes=2C no fuel s
huto
ff valve=2C no carb heat!) and I have checked out another pilot or two in
t
he airplane while I flew front seat and they were in back.- I have also f
lo
wn numerous flights with a buddy where I have flown navigator position in f
ront with him as PIC in back=2C and had him ask me to take the controls w
hi
le he peeled of a jacket=2C put on a jacket=2C or made other adjustment
s.-
It was handy to have that capability=2C but certainly not something that
ha
ppens frequently.- I think it heightens the joy and wonder of a first fli
gh
t if you offer a passenger the opportunity to take the controls and let the
m feel what it's like to control the airplane in flight.
I guess it would be OK to just have a "sterile cockpit" up there=2C but p
ar
t of the appeal of the Air Camper to me is that it has controls up front.
-
Mine has rudder=2C stick=2C and throttle in front... and I learned to f
ly i
t with just those essentials plus sight and sound.- I like flying it from
u
p there=2C too.- But yes=2C you could save a couple of pounds by elim
inatin
g front cockpit controls.

Bruce, for the interior parts you describe, you only need enough product to
protect the wood. Any more than that is added weight and cost. Resist the
temptation to slap on multiple heavy coats for a show room glossy look...it
all gets covered up.- Consider the environment your plane will reside in
, (hangar, outside...) as well as type varnish used and any thinning. I use
d a single coat of water based varnish for all covered parts and two coats
of un-thinned spar varnish for the cockpits.
