Subject: | A cold fall flight... |
Forecast said this would be a cool, cloudy but very still day. Got to the
airport at 11:00am, it was about 40 degrees. I was interested in how cold
it would feel, and excited because this would be my first chance to use the
WWII vintage leather flying coveralls I purchased years ago Chris Bobka
during the building/dreaming stage.
Fueled up with twelve gallons of 100ll. Suit felt great, clearly designed
for sitting, though it was hard to get my harness on. Earplugs in, leather
helmet on, goggles on (I need these with my windscreens or else my eyes
water all the time and burn the next day). Pointed her nose down the runway
(not into the wind, as there wasn't any) and took of into a leaden sky for a
later morning patrol.
The C-90/Cloud Car prop combo turns up about 2475 on climbout, though I kept
the nose down to keep the engine cool as she's still breaking in. Turned
away to find the local lake while I climbed to 3,000. Proceeded to explore
both power on and power off stalls. I can feel absolutely NO buffet before
either. I'm trying to train myself to feel when she's on the edge, but the
best I can come up with is a mushy feel on the elevators. If I didn't have
earplugs, I'm sure the sounds would be a giveaway as well. She stalls
straight ahead power on and power off.
After I played around with that for a while, I decided to see if my
refurbished Garmin 196 was working so I flew over to Lebanon/Warren County,
led me right there. Overflew it and decided now was as good a time as ever
to try an asphalt landing, so got into the pattern and did one fly by down
the runway to get a feel for it. Set up again and everything went really
well, three-pointed it on and she stayed nice and straight. I like the
bungees being pretty firm, she just seems to squat onto the pavement. As I
gave her the gas to go around, I noticed a guy running out with a camera so
gave him some smoke, knowing I"d have to clean her up later because I've not
installed the longer downpipes on my exhaust, but what the heck! I remember
being that guy for most of my life!!
Did another nice landing and headed home.
Approaching the field I saw about a half dozen parachutes over the field so
I flew right through them with smoke going. NO, JUST KIDDING. I peeled off
and hung out of range 'til the last one landed then came in for a landing.
However, by now, it's been almost an hour and I guess I'm colder than I
thought (my teeth were almost chattering) and I plunked her down from too
high. Guess I was in some sort of cold stupor or something. Ticked me off
so I went around and did it twice more, both of them nice. Good lesson to
learn, that you can get kind of numb when it's cold, or after a long flight.
First raindrops started to fall as I taxied to the hangar. Went to
Mcdonalds and got some coffee and drove home.
God is good!
Keep building, it's worth it!!!

Douwe, that guy with a camera was me. I spotted you as a Pietenpol over a mile
out and scrambled to get my camera in case you only flew by once. Fortunately
you hung around and did a few touch-n-go's so I drove down the taxiway to get
a little closer. I tried hailing you on the radio to see if you would mind
stopping by so I could admire your Piet but I guess you were NORDO. Looked great!
Here are some of the pictures I took. Did you hit any of the rain on your
way home?
I believe we may have some common acquaintances. I know Kentuckians Barry Rusk, who
has a Kitfox, and Dan Sherrer, who is building a Zenith 601XL and they told
me they knew about you and your Pietenpol.

Nice writeup, Douwe.
I find the same thing, after flying a long leg of a cross-country, I tend to
land about 3' above the runway. I find it best to make a full pattern to
get some turns in to sort of get the feel of the airplane back. Worst is if
I make a straight-in approach. I need to make at least one turn, to have
any chance at a decent landing.

Really enjoying your reports Douwe. Thanks for sharing your experience. That
bit about flying through the parachutes cracked me up... had me going for a second
as I read that. Ha!
The photos look way cool... you have a really neat looking airplane.

Beautiful pictures, Gary. I flew to Oroville And then to Corning today. Cor
ning is on 123.00 Unicom ,so I thought about asking those in the pattern at L
incoln if they saw a beautiful Pietenpol flying around! Sounded as though L
incoln was pretty busy today. I will find you someday.

tupor or something. Ticked me off so I went around and did it twice more, b
oth of them nice. Good lesson to learn, that you can get kind of numb when i
t=99s cold, or after a long flight.

Subject: | Missing Conversation... |
On several occasions I've noticed that people are replying to comments made by
others that aren't being posted to the web version... makes it clear to me that
I am missing large parts of conversations at times.
As an example, in this thread it is clear that Ray is responding to a comment that
Gary made in reference to Douwe's most recent report.

But there is no sign of Gary's comment on Douwe's thread...

There could be an easy answer to this, but I'm just wondering, where are these
conversations taking place? Via e-mail? If so, why would the e-mail be received
by the group, but the text not be displayed on the web list? I mean, there
appear to be others that use e-mail to communicate and their text is on the
web (i.e. Ray received Gary's text, which doesn't appear on the web, yet Ray's
response IS on the web). I'm wondering how I can see all of the conversation
without having to constantly check or participate via e-mail?

Maybe we have to "Reply to all" on this forum so everyone can see it? I have just
been hitting "Reply". Maybe Matt could respond.

Your text posted fine Ray. While it created a new thread, it did at least get
posted.
