Subject: | Coming Soon - The List of Contributors - Please Make A |
Contribution Today!
Each year at the end of the List Fund Raiser, I post a message acknowledging everyone
that so generously made a Contribution to support the Lists. Its my way
of publicly thanking everyone that took a minute to show their appreciation
for the Lists.
Please take a moment and assure that your name is on that List of Contributors
(LOC)! As a number of members have pointed out over the years, the List seems
at least as valuable a building / entertainment tool as your typical magazine
subscription!
Make sure that your name is on this year's LOC! Show others that you appreciate
the Lists. Making a Contribution to support the Lists is fast and easy using
your Credit card or Paypal on the Secure Web Site:
http://www.matronics.com/contribution
or by dropping a personal check in the mail to:
Matt Dralle / Matronics
581 Jeannie Way

I would like to thank everyone that has so generously made a Contribution thus
far in this year's List Fund Raiser! Remember that its YOUR support that keeps
these Lists going and improving! Don't forget to include a little comment about
how the Lists have helped you!
Best regards,
Matt Dralle

OK, got grief for not posting photos, so here is a video shot today of firs
t engine run. Brett Phillips came and helped out, and after chasing initia
l water and fuel leaks, we got it running and put nearly an hour on it off
and on. Ran it to full power briefly a couple of times, can't wait to get
the fish scale, I think it'll break it! LOL
Finalize a few engine items, trim a few areas of the cowling, and all is re
ady to paint and install. Wing is almost ready to shoot silver, then color
. Planning on first flight as soon as the weather warms up in the spring.
Brodhead FOR SURE this year, Jack and Matt, get ready . . . Douwe, we'll m

d and have a REAL squadron headed west!

Chuck, Dave and others, powder coating is a great process, easy to learn
with many videos on youtube. Some say it hides metal cracks, I=92m
using a
flat texture coating which I believe will show cracks. Columbia Coatings
is
a great source of coatings and advice. I=92m using a Harbor Freight gun
but
planning to upgrade to an adjustable current machine which hopefully
will
allow better coverage in corners. I too use a 24 inch oven in the
basement
but needed an oven for the longer parts. From Menards (hate shopping
there)
I purchased a 5 foot x 8 inch duct tube, cutting to the length needed. I
used the excess to cut a baffle that was inset about 4 inches above the
burner to deflect direct heat from the burner. Its about 3 inches wide.
The
burner, from Menards was $12 and fit well. I attached the tube with 4 L
tabs, riveted to the tube and screwed to the burner. Buy an 8 inch cap
for
the top. Add handles as you wish. I used an old thermometer from a grill
and
a =BC inch threaded rod to hang parts on. I use an infrared thermometer
to
check the temp and it varies a bunch. Watch the heat close and you can
keep
it close to the 375 to 400 needed for 15 to 20 minutes. I was surprised
the
tube and top were relatively cool (100+) when the chamber is up to heat.
It
wont handle my gear legs so I will need to impose upon my friend Jerry
Grogan to use his oven. It=92s a great cheap setup. Good luck with
yours!

How many black and yellow painted planes are there now?- Seems like what,

Cloud cars prop. Don't recall diameter, 40 pitch. Jay Anderson made this pr
op differently from others as an experiment. I think it is thicker and linge
r than most. We'll see how it acts later this week with spring scale, and ho
w it flys next spring.

I had the same question when I first saw it mounted, and Gene gave me the
same answer. Fortunately I had my tape measure and can tell you that it's
a 76" diameter. With the 40" pitch, I expect it to turn up pretty fast.
Initial testing yesterday with a questionable tach seems to support that.
The weather was perfect for carb ice yesterday, and we had a demonstration
of the well known icing abilities of the un-heated Ford carburetor and
manifold. As a result, idle was not a strong point, but full power seemed
pretty good for short bursts.

This is just a great thing to see....an EAA Chapter actually building and c
ompleting a flyable Pietenpol. This is the same Piet that
they trucked ALL the way from California to display in skeleton form at Bro
dhead and Oshkosh.
My hat is off to this group and Steve Williamson. Looking forward to hear
ing how the test flight goes after this weekend!

Subject: French Valley Pietenpol Update
Dear Friends and Members,
After seven and one-half years of effort by members of EAA Chapter 1279, ou
r Pietenpol Air Camper is finally finished. Our Airworthiness inspection w
as performed by DAR John Shablow on Saturday, October 27, 2012. As part of
his final inspection, John conducted a final Weight & Balance for the reco
rd. Empty weight came out at 765 lbs. with no pilot and no fuel. With 7 g
allons of fuel in the fuselage tank (located just behind the firewall) and
a 170 pound pilot (solo), the CG falls at 19.4 inches aft of the leading ed
ge of the wing. This is near the aft CG limit, but well forward of the cen
ter of lift in level flight. Since the CG fell within the limits, John wen
t ahead with the final inspection and paper work necessary to issue the Air
worthiness Certificate for the airplane. (See photos below)
Ownership of the airplane will be shared by Chapter 1279 president Steve Wi
lliamson and Chapter treasurer Peter Griffiths. Thus, the airplane will re
main at French Valley and continue to reflect its association with the Fren
ch Valley chapter.
First flight is scheduled for Saturday, November 10, 2012 with long-time Pi
etenpol owner and pilot Scott Liefield doing the honors. It was agreed by
all that Scott's experience and expertise in Pietenpols would be invaluable
in terms of evaluating and sharing his impressions of the handling charact
eristics of our airplane.
I would like to extend congratulations to all of the members who participat
ed in the construction of this airplane over the past seven years. And the
re have been many. I also want to extend congratulations, and express my a
ppreciation to chapter vice-president and Technical Counselor Art Froehlich
, who was responsible for having introduced the concept of a Saturday morni
ng Builders' Workshop which ultimately produced the Pietenpol Air Camper pi
ctured below.
As I look back on this experience, I offer this final thought. I genuinely
and sincerely hope that this chapter's achievement will inspire other EAA
chapter's all over the country to follow suit - for the benefit of their ow
n members, for EAA as an organization, and for the aviation community at la
rge. Through our chapter's Saturday morning Builders' Workshop, dozens of
EAA Chapter 1279 members went from "dreamers" to do'ers. They gained the c

own building projects, and, as a by-product, added to the fleet the latest
example of Bernard Pietenpol's venerable Pietenpol Air Camper. Workshop pa

Subject: | Steel-Tube Pietenpol Update... |
Hello good Piet-ple,
Thought I'd post a couple images of my project. Most of the progress lately has
been with the "walking beam - bellcrank assembly) for the elevator in the aft
section of the fuselage. I moved the whole assembly up several inches so the
cables will not rub on the elevator. My design follows others who have used external
bellcranks for the elevator - looks older and the geometry works better
as the bellcrank on the inside can be perpendicular to the pulley behind the
seat at the same time as the external bellcranks can be parallel to the elevator
horns.
Having a fine time.....

I must say that I really like the external bell crank and cable look (especially
on Dick Navratil's beautiful round-engined version). I'll caution you, though,
that the added drag will slow your airplane down, reduce climb rate, increase
fuel consumption, and probably mean that more people will stop to look at
your old-timey airplane and delay you when you're preflighting, slow you down
to answer questions when you're trying to go flying, and make you stand by the
airplane to take pictures of you next to it.
On paper, the reduction in cruise speed due to exposed bellcranks and cables will
be 0.002 knots (with standard atmosphere and pressure); climb rate will drop
by at least 1 or 1.25 FPM, and fuel consumption will increase by 0.5 TPH (thimblefuls
per hour).
In reality, the exposed stuff won't make ANY difference other than increasing the
PCF (perceived coolness factor) by 2X. I like the look of it!

Yes, thanks.... I figure if I add up all the things that will slow my Pietenpol
down, I will actually be traveling backwards - backwards in time that is (ha!)

Subject: | brass dataplates- update |
Folks=3B
I was getting down to the last dozen or so of the run of brass data plates
that I had made up some years back=2C and wondering if there was still enou
gh interest in them for me to order another run. About that time=2C Gerry
Holland sent me some pictures of the cooling eyebrows on his Junior Ace and
we began discussing some small=2C decorative=2C oval brass plates that mig
ht set off the polished aluminum of the eyebrows. That led me to explore h
aving some smaller plates made with an "Air Camper" logo on them=2C just to
add interest to our airplanes. Perhaps one mounted to the top center of t
he firewall=2C or in the front cockpit=2C or on the sides of the cockpit be
low the coaming=2C wherever.
So I have good news and bad news. The good news is that I decided that bas
ed on my present health and circumstances=2C I may live long enough to sell
another run of the brass data plates so I've got more on their way. Certa
inly we can see from the growing number of superb Air Camper completions ea
ch year that the marque is in no danger of fading away!!! The other good n
ews is that I commissioned Denny Demeter at AvGrafix to create the smaller
brass plates for me as well=2C and I have a run of those coming. I have no
t seen them yet (just the artwork proof)=2C but Denny assures me that they
are suitable for mounting on the exterior of our airplanes and they will en
dure the rigors. I was concerned about thin graphic appliques on brass pee
ling off=2C but these are etched and should last quite well. Denny squeeze
d my order in after completing a run of huge vinyl graphics for a bunch of
C-130 Hercs=2C so if he can put his work on those big dawgs=2C our little 6
5MPH piddlers should pose no problems!
The bad news is that costs have crept up as time has marched on=2C and I'm
going to have to increase the selling price for both the data plates and th
e new=2C slightly smaller logo plates. They will be sold for $12 USD each
=2C postage paid to anywhere in the known universe. They will also still b
e free to anyone who gives me a ride in their Piet. And since I'm often giv
en to lapses of good sense and confused ideas of economic reality=2C I woul
d probably discount the cost to anyone who ordered a set of three (large da
taplate plus two smaller oval logo plates=2C one for each side or each cock
pit=2C or whatever). And if offered a good beer=2C I would just hand over
a brass plate=2C pay for the beer=2C and go away happy =3Bo)
I do not have the new plates yet so I'm not taking orders for them. I will
post pictures when I get the new plates=2C and I'll be mounting one or two
of them on Scout in a few weeks when I get the airplane home. I think I'l
l also try to contact Brian D'Amato to see if he still offers his nifty bla
ck-on-aluminum plates that I copied to create the brass ones. I hope so=2C
because I like options and I'm sure all of you do as well=2C so I've alway
s shown his plates and ordering info on my webpage too.
Hey... maybe I should commission some special black-and-yellow cloisonne pl
ates for the growing gaggle of color scheme copy-cats? =3Bo)

Oscar, count me in .. on the plates, the beer, the ride. Oh wait,
can't give a ride yet, but could go for one in Scout, unless you want
to sit in the front pit while I'm in the back pit and we both make
airplane noises in my Piet. In any case, count me in for something.
Cheers, Ken
