Oscar, thanks for the offer!
I was just leaving with template material this morning to start.
I think you're won't work because I am going to have to devise something
tricky to mount them to the engine without having to cut my cowling, which I
don't want to do.
I didn't get an attachment to Gene's post about straightening fish scales.
what happened??

Any reason one couldn't make cooling eyebrows out of carbon fiber and use
steel brackets for attaching to the hot surfaces? Isn't carbon fiber
significantly more resistant to cracking or am I wrong here?

As I heard it, "Bernie" also did not use seat belts - they certainly
are not shown in the plans. (You can take this "build to the plans"
thing just a little too far. )
By the way, I also believe he preferred Bernard and did not
particularly care to be called Bernie. 8^) Probably one of those kid
names that his mom called him that he could not shake.

Many of you paid with years of your life. Thanks.
Some of you paid with scars you still carry, both on the outside, and on the inside.
Many thanks.
You are the remnant of what has made this country great.

I recently had a road trip out to the Western part of the state for an
interview, in so doing I had made arrangements to meet up with Fred Kim one of
our newer builders. I got a chance to take a look at his project. Fred is
building with his Dad and they have a great project on the bench and making
serious progress. They've been at it since January 2012 and have a great
looking fuse on the bench.
During the drive out I almost thought we were on our way to see Michael
Cuy, we went what seemed well past Pittsburgh and although Fred said
Pittsburgh it sure seemed like an Ohio trip.
We had a really nice time visiting and grabbed some dinner, Thanks Fred I
enjoyed the meeting, the shop tour and seeing the project, I hope next time
to meet the other half of the build team. Fred, you guys do a remarkable
job, I would encourage any in the area to get in touch with Fred and check
out his project. At the current rate of build you're not going to have much
time to do a shop visit, they'll be flying their Piet real soon, I'm certain
of that.

Douwe;
It's always a good thing when you don't have to rework anything, especially if
you're already flying. In that case "you've gotta dance with who brung you".
As to the fish scale debacle, it was just Mr. Rambo playing with our emotions.
No harm, no foul.

Subject: | Re: composite cooling eyebrows |
Not true. As in so many other things, Mr. Pietenpol was also an early pioneer
in the use of composites for homebuilts. In the early 1930s he became aware of
a product called Bakelite that was just being developed. The fibers in Bakelite
were asbestos, so his interest was piqued because it would make the material
fire resistant. He also recognized that the product could be molded on a
form to create curved shapes and he ended up making a cooling air scoop for a
cowled version of the Air Camper with an inverted inline Menasco Pirate on it.
The airplane flew great and the engine cooled great, but he ended up putting
it in a lake after Axel Olsson loosened the nuts holding the wheels to his landing
gear and he had to ditch it.
And if you believe that, I've got a set of fish scales with straightened hooks
that you can borrow, too...
