      Tools,

Thanks for that post with the info and pics. One of my recurring nightmares
is "landing out" and trying to figure out how to move it all with the one-
piece wing. I will be on the lookout for one of those trailers. I live in t
he right place these days to look for that kind of stuff. A lot of good use
      ful "junk" around these parts.

Those seals...sometimes known as conical seas or voyshams, are great and work very
well. Here at work, we are getting away from the AN flare type connection
all together, but for the systems that still use these fittings, the copper AN
flare seals are a life saver.

That's great news, Gardiner! I have a hard time imagining how you and Douwe
sucked it up to rebuild after having built the airplane once already. My e
xperience at Oshkosh last year having only to rebuild the left elevator gav
e me some insight, but that was colored by the urgency of getting it finish
ed so I could fly home. Keeping that motivation - gotta be hard! Can't wait
       to see it in person.

Julie has seen it, but only once I think, not enough to memorize any of it. I
watched it once with a bunch of non-airplane friends, and at the end somebody
said, "but everybody dies!" Maybe not everybody, but I realized that I never
noticed the tragedy as much as the adventure.

I read once that the film makers realized during a test screening that they had
made a huge mistake having Mary Beth die, that the audience had a very negative
reaction to this, but it was too late to change it. Redford in the viewer's
eyes was supposed to be a hero who saved the girl, when he didn't the reaction
was negative and that's one of the reasons why the box office wasn't that good.

I knew Jim Appleby a little bit, and amongst other stories he told me that the
really large woman that Waldo apparently takes up near the beginning really wanted
a ride in the Standard, but they were afraid she wouldn't fit, so they made
excuses until it go too dark. At a party once we tried to get Jim to say his
one line from the film, "I knew she wasn't worth top billing..." but he wouldn't
      say it.

Congrats on getting her back home. Hopefully you can get her back in the
air in time for a sojourn to Brodhead next summer.

Just curious, as it's hard to tell for sure from the angles of the
shots....what's the status of the aft part of the fuselage? It appears that
the last, say 12 inches, is "bent" downward; I know, wood would be broken,
not bent....just as far as a description though. Hope the repairs go well,

When we had to get the Rudolph Piet out of the bean field in '09 we used a 24 foot
enclosed trailer, propped the wing up in the top, with about 6 feet sticking
out the back, and put the fuselage underneath. You worry about drivers behind
you, but it was what was available and it worked OK. Had to prop the door
open also so it wouldn't drop on the wing. Wish I had photos.

      Steve:

Surely you were taught correctly in shop class to measure twice and curse once.

By the way, I know it is not a reference to our favorite movie TGWP but that phrase
"Oh Fudge" does come from a seasonal favorite: "The Christmas Story" wherein
the story narrator as a boy exclaims "Oh Fudge (but the word wasn't really
Fudge)" to his father as he watches the lug nuts from the wheel, he is for the
first time helping his father change, go sparkling off into the distance like
stars in the sky. That, of course, leads to the famous "blinded by Lifebuoy
      soap" episode.

Ah, where would we be without those handy movie references?

Relevance, what relevance" Um, oh - - Well my Piet does not have any lug nuts
so I guess I will just go away now.

      Stinemetze,

That is exactly how I moved grandpa's Piet. I used 3' x 12' strips of carpet with
the biggest washers I could find to support the wing, with the trailer door
tied open. Large pieces of foam between the wing and trailer wall to keep it
      from bouncing off the wall

Here's a pic of how we hauled Mtn. Piet from Jefferson, IA to Prairie Home,
MO (325 miles). Built a box for the good wing panel. The box was really a
frame covered with a tarp. The destroyed wind rode home on the top of
the truck. Didn't get a scratch on the fuse or good wing. It got a log of
      interest at gas stations!

I had an opportunity to teach my other boy some new words when I pinched my right
index finger in a hangar door, but It hurt so bad I could not speak. Worse,
it happened in slow motion and no one was to blame but me. It hurt so bad I
could not even kick a dog.

The tragedy of "everyone dying" is a little hard to ignore. Because of that I
don't think my wife will ever watch it again. And it is a little hard to explain
to the kids the "someone get me a 2 by 4 scene" and then expect them to go
hop in the Piet and go for a ride. Come to think of it, it is kind of a 'dark'
movie and not very good. But for some reason because of all you Piet guys I
want to watch it over and over!

Gardner, really nice job. I'm curious about the fuel gauge. I assume a
capacitance gauge measures capacity of the tank (however that is done). I
assume that with two gauges one could measure two tanks. I like the idea of
fuel gauges fitting flush on the wing center, yet visible from the cockpit.
Can you please let me know the brand and source for these gauges?

It is a compass and my fuel gage is up there also. It is a capacitance gage
that fits flush, and seen from my seat. Gardiner

Hello Gardiner; just sent you an email, but figured others would want to
know the following also. is the gauge hanging from your center section a
fuel gauge or compass? if a fuel gauge, would love to find out your setup.
      thanks; Paul

Just a reminder, don't rush, measure, think ahead, plan. Just redid my fuel selector.
Was proud of the install until I realized after drawing out my fuel system
it was on the wrong side. Moved to the port side and all is good. So many
interesting details at this stage of the build.
