It's great you will get some local help. To be honest I would make sure the w
ork is good enough you will use it. I bought a project and only used the whe
els after rebuilding them. Look at everything very close...type of wood, cor
rect grain and orientation, glue joints, built to plans, 4130 metal, fitting
s well made, aircraft cable the correct size and fittings...lots of things t
o check!

Thanks for the input everyone. The seller (builder's son) seems sort of
clueless as far as technical details go. He just wants to unload it. I'm
going to go into this project with my eyes wide open with a previous
builder along too.......For $300 it's still worth a look........ Will
keep you posted on results.......

Charles,
Congratulations on accomplishing such a milestone at a young age! I
was just about your age when I saw my first Pietenpol and vowed to
someday build that...that was 40 years ago, and have just accomplished
that dream...
I tend to agree with Mario, as I doubt there is not too much you
couldn't fix at that price! It would also be very instructive for you to
bring another experienced builder with you...besides the obvious
advantage of getting some free help loading it.
Keep in mind that this is a multi-year commitment, even for the most
committed, even obsessive, builder. Please stay in touch with us and let
us know how it turns out. That project will have a special story, all
its own.

Tell him you want him to throw in the plans as well. By doing that you can have
something to compare the construction to once you look at it.

I had a heck of a time starting my Piet with an A engine..
everyone else said it should fire right up after a couple of turns.... but with
the carb i'm running it just wouldn't happen without a shot of ether.
I added a primer line and its one pull now..
Like the others said... double check that you have spark at the right place and
time and a shot of starting fluid will tell you if it'll run.

Oscar,
It is quite common for the float needle to stick on these engines. Before you
spend too much time doing a bunch of trouble shooting, try this. Take a wood handled
hammer and while using the butt end, give the carb a few good taps just
above where the mixture control is . That is where you will see the two half's
of the carb body. I'm sure that is all you will need to do. I see it happen
all the time when an engine sits any length of time. My friend had to do this
every time he flew. Of coarse he only flew a few times a year.
Let me know how it goes,
Cheers,

Jeff:
They are all different, it seems. I've recently been doing some work on the carburetor
for NX311GP, and I discovered some of the reason that it always started
easily with no primer or choke: The model B carburetor had an oversize main
jet, and in reworking the throttle shaft for the conversion, the power circuit
was essentially "turned on" full time. If those two things wouldn't make for
a rich mixture, I'm not sure what would! It ran very well that way, but I'm
returning it to more of a stock setup and will see how it does on the new engine.
I'm afraid I may need a primer or a choke...
Have you been out stretching your wings yet?

Hi Charles.
Welcome to the group. I'm the guy that Scott mentioned. If our schedules can mesh,
I'd be glad to offer any assistance I can. After building and studying the
plans for about 8 years, one tends to get pretty familiar with the details.
Feel free to contact me offlist when you have some details firmed up, or if
you just have questions.

Andy;
If your Stromberg has the mixture adjustment parts installed, I would assume that
you can adjust the mixture. Most of them have the mixture wired full rich
or have had the adjustment parts removed though.
The operating manuals for many aircraft that had the mixture adjustment said not
to adjust the mixture below about 5000 ft. There is some good technical information
available about the mixture control on these carbs, but I have forgotten
where to find it. I just checked the Fly Baby site, but did not find it there.

Andy, Oscar:
In the archives, there is a reference that was posted by Bill Church
on March 17, 2011 to the Stromberg manual. It may have information
about setting mixture control on the Strombergs. The link is
http://www.mykitplane.com/Planes/PeoplesFiles/Stromberg%20NAS3A1,%20C-series%20Cont.pdf.
(You may need to do a bit of copying and pasting into your browser to
get the whole thing on one line.).
