"Would GN1 landing gear fit on a 'real' Pietenpol aircamper?"
Charles,
You would at a minimum have to redesign the attaching brackets. On a Grega, the
rear spars don't line up with the rear landing gear bracket but they do on a
"real" Pietenpol. Grega did this to be able to use Piper Cub landing gears,
which were plentiful when he did his modifications.

Jack,
The drawing is calling for two tubes, telescoping one inside the other.
Note the cross-hatching in the cross-section. It is a drawing convention
that when the direction of cross-hatching (the little angled lines) changes,
it implies that there is a separate part shown.
Slip a piece of 1/2" tube (either .035" wall or .049" wall) inside the 5/8"
tube and after welding, ream to fit a 7/16" (0.4375") bolt.

Do you weld in the 1/2 tube or is this a slip fit so it can be replaced due
to wear?? Why is this not mentioned on the plans? Why would you build it
this way? Is there some reason not use one piece of thicker tubing? Why
didn't Jack T. tell me this before I just ordered the tubing for the engine
mount. Now I am depressed and I will have to go watch more TV.

Chris,
I really don't think it matters if the inner tube is welded to the outer
tube or not - it is just a "filler", but I would probably weld them together
- no reason not to.
To be honest, I didn't build mine that way. I bought some 1.75" dia 4130
rod stock and had a machine shop turn down the fittings and ream the bore to
.4375", then I welded them into the mount. I just found that easier and
stronger, since there is no gap between the inner and outer tubes (there
being but one thick tube), and since the flat washer takes considerable load
I wanted it to be stronger than just a hardware store washer. Here's a
picture showing mine in the jig for welding:
And a picture of the finished product on the airplane:
Hope that helps.

I am in Winnipeg for work and with some time off today I ventured out to visit
Lyncrest Airport, east of the city. They have two grass strips that are pretty
well snow covered this time of year. I saw a few vehicles in front of a hanger
so on a whim, I barged on in and introduced myself as a pilot and builder.
As it happens, one of the guys there was Adrian with a Pietenpol who posts here
occasionally as Pineymb. They were gracious enough to let me hang out with
them for a while and shoot the breeze. Adrian has a nice Pietenpol, currently
on skis. He has a 2-piece wing which is the first one I have ever seen. The
weather was low overcast skies so no one was up flying. I hope to stop back
some day when the weather is better.

No wonder you're having difficulty with the plans... you've got them upside down.
Don't build your motor mount that way.

Hi All,
Speaking of engine mount jigs. I am finished with Don E's nice angle iron jig.
Don told me to pass it on when I'm done. Very sturdy jig, for small continental,
think it is about 1" longer than plans, puts the top flange 13 3/4" from fire
wall.
Can be picked up in NW West Virginia, by Parkersburg, write me off list.

Has anyone ever had this trouble. I cannot believe it is even doing it and don't
know why or how to stop it. I soaked my spruce cap strips in a pvc tube with
tap water overnight, next day pull them out and put in jig. They dry out overnight
but when dry they have black mold spots on them. I then tried distilled
water and same results. Tried adding bleach to distilled water and after they
were dry they have black spots again. The problem also is that they seem to be
deep and it doesn't want to sand off easy. After scrubing the dry wood with straight
bleach it will come off but then turns the wood a grey color when the
bleach dries. Anyone know whats going on and how to stop it? Thanks Rob

Soak them in boiling water - it will inhibit a lot of of the mold
growth, plus you only need to soak for 30-45 minutes, so you are
drastically cutting down on the time the wood is wet. Seal your jig
with a polyurethane varnish, just in case it is a source of mold
spores. Put your drying capstrip/jig in a sunny (or at least not
dark) spot. I won't garauntee that any of this will stop all the mold
growth, but what you are doing is minimizing the conditions (cool,
dark & wet) that encourage it. If you still have problems, try
'bleaching' with hydrogen peroxide instead of bleach. It removes the
stain without discoloring the wood so badly.

Hey Fred and Fred... I do remember we talked about getting it for you to use.
It's a little bulky, but with some creativity you could probably get it in the
L2. Skip lives on an airstrip so that helps. You could probably take some of
it apart too. When you put it back together though, you might want to do a
little re-aligning.
