Anyone need or interested in this? This is a two cylinder--complete with
spare. I can get more on this if anyone is interested. If I had extra
cash, I'd buy them. I am an A&P and can tell you they look sweet--would
fit nice on a Piet! John 90% done/90% to go

Well....60 hp, but you have to turn it up to 3200RPM to get that, and dry
weight is around 150~ lbs, so it's also kind of light for a Piet. Plus it's
an oddball Franklin engine, so parts are going to be....less than
plentiful, shall we say. :P
It sort of ballparks around the weight/power/RPM of VW conversions, and the
questionable suitably of those for a Piet has been hashed around before.
It would be an interesting conversation piece though in the hangar though :P

It might make a nice Ice Boat (prop driven bob slead thinggy) engine, I cou
ld use one today here in this blizzard.- Those were the 2 cyl. engines th
at Bellanca put on the 7ACA champs in the early 70's.- Every one I have e
ver seen (only 4 or 5)-that came from the factory with the 2 cyl, has bee
n modified to at least the 65 cont.- They were the first champs to have t
he spring gear, like the Citabrias of the era.

Any ideas opinions on how this might perform on a GN-1 compared to an
A65? I think it would look nice atleast. Will need to fabricate motor mount/exhaust
for starters. Price a bit steep though.. Larry

Well, Frank Pavliga has a 90hp Lambert on his Piet....a development of the
Velie, a little lighter but more or less the same size physically. The M-5
would be ~220-240lbs, depending on who you believe, so that would be Model
A ballpark weight but with more power. No reason why it wouldn't fly
fine....
It would look cool, but compared to an A-65....heavier, and parts far less
available; plus it's been sitting for 58 years, and might need accessories
overhauled. Maybe it will be just fine, maybe you would have to throw way
more money into it. By comparison:
http://www.barnstormers.com/classified_638232_continental+engine.html
$6500 (well, the text in the ad says $6000) gets you a purportedly low-time
A-65 with 150 SMOH, new Slick mags, running right now on a Cub.....
A Velie powered Piet would be very cool, just depends whether you would be
willing to dedicate the money/effort to such an antique combo, or would
prefer a more practical/less expensive combo like the A-65 powered
variant....

I have flown one of those Champs (once) in the early 90's. Although it flew, it
wasn't very well. They were certified in Minnesota in the winter time. That
being said, I had a hard time keeping the oil temp down out here in California.
It wasn't even hot out. Oh, It shook pretty good at lower RPM's too. I
vote for the boat thingy application.
Cheers

That could work. Just put a throttle stop on the thing. I was thinking it would
work good on a volksplane or hummel bird.

My A65 runs just fine...can't even find a drop of oil in the cowling at annual
on my GN-1, but that li'l M-5 sure would look good. I think I better stick w/what
I have. Like archie bunker says "if it ain't fixed, why not break it any more"

Looks beautiful...!! I am choosing to use a ROTEC radial to mimic Bernard Pietenpol's
Velie radial ship he built in 1931. My choice is for looks and reliability
but the Velie would sure be nice. It certainly would sound better. For the
price they are asking you could buy it and put $10,000 more into rebuilding it
and still spend no more than the ROTEC. It all depends on what you want to build
and why you are embarked on this journey....... I spent about 16 hours in
the shop over the past two days an it feels very gratifying....... Any choice
you make will bring a neat airplane - the airplane you build - into the skies.........

Had my brother sketch this up. Tape a copy to a piece of metal and center punch
on the X's. I used a 3.5' hole saw for the outside diameter and 2' for the center.
