Here is a quote from the email: "Please find attached the final pic of the Pietenpol built and owned by Fred Imrie of B.C. that my father died in only a few hours later. In the pic, I am the young guy in the passenger seat upfront. If it's good enough to post somewhere, I'd like you to do so for me and the Hoopman Family. I don't think anyone else has a copy of it. It came from my father's camera, which I was holding as he took off on the fateful flight." The quotes are from 2 emails I received. Informative pictures, Matt. I'm building my hubs the same way, using 19" aluminum rims and stainless spokes. I'm adapting them to very light dirt bike disc brakes and using go-cart calipers. Don't forget to chamfer those spoke holes. Mike Hardaway Sent from an Apple iThingie. On Dec 26, 2012, at 11:13 PM, "jet_jockey" wrote: > > Had my brother sketch this up. Hoopman ( grandson of Orrin C Hoopman ) From: "TaiwanTeacher" Chris Rusch wrote: > Just so we all can learn, what was the cause of the accident? Greetings all, I am Orrin D. Hoopman. It's a bit of a complicated story as to how my father died in a Pietnepol in 1983. The gist of it is, the winds were not very good that day at a small fly-in airshow in Shelton WA, as the airport was located close to a mountain range. In the morning, the pilot, Fred Imrie, had taken me up first, and then my half-brother, Eric (whose socks you see under the a/c in the pic); the other kid is the pilot's son. The winds got a little worse, and the pilot decided to hold off on taking my father up until they improved. After a long lunch break, the wind had changed direction, other a/c started taking off again, and seemed to be doing well enough. Out of the kindness of his heart, Fred opted to "give it a go". This was an uncontrolled rural airfield, with the radio staffed by ROTC Air Cadets (I think). They direction for takeoffs hadn't been changed for the afternoon, and there was an oblique tailwind on the runway. Anyhow, they got into line to taxi. I waved at my father, but couldn't get the camera to work for the take-off shot (it hadn't been wound forward, and I was unfamiliar with it). A Stearman took off in front of them, and some other small plane was in line behind them. The end of the runway was obscured from the crowd by trees and bushes. It only took a minute to notice that the Pietenpol wasn't in formation on the circle of planes rising out of the field. In an attempt to climb out over the treeline after an extended takeoff roll, it had crashed shortly after takeoff from an altitude of about 200ft. Evidently, the winds coming over the mountains nearby had created a "roller" wave, causing the instantaneous loss of lift for the struggling little Piet, and it nosed in, killing Orrin C.'s son, Delbert O., from asphyxiation due to crushed/puntured lungs, and giving the pilot a broken jaw. He didn't get any more than 90 degrees of turn in the pattern and about 500 yards from the end of the runway before he lost lift and crashed. Sorry if this has been posted, but I struggled to think of a good search term... I am assuming it is aluminum, but kind and thickness is not called out that I can see on the plans.
