From: "Don Emch" Hey Fred, The Piet taxis and turns amazingly well on the skis. It will turn just as tight as with the wheels. They even have very small keels on them and still it swings right around. Keeping them waxed makes a huge difference in taxi, takeoff and handling in general. For a couple of winters I drug the tailwheel through the snow. That little wheel found all the frozen bumps under the snow and just wasn't much fun. A couple of years ago I made a tail ski. It is wonderful. It changed the whole handling experience. It just glides along now. I put a small keel in the ski. I thought I had a picture of it somewhere but can't find it now. I'll try to get a picture of it today and post it. Don Emch NX899DE P.S. Kip, there probably is some kind of servo mounted attachment out there for the Go Pro. That's probably too advanced for me though. I have enough trouble getting past "on" and "record". Ha! The original drawings had white lines on dark blue or black paper. I think that Vi Kapler has a set of the original "blueprints". Goldie gave many of the drawings she had remaining to one of the members of the Austin EAA chapter. Thank You for sharing the photograph and the story of your father. You should have seen the crowd that gathered around your grandfather during his last visit to Brodhead. Wow, I thought he was a rock star. Your grandma did too! > > Dan Wilson > Austin, MN Thank you, Dan, for sharing your warm and pleasant thoughts during this holiday season. So happy to learn that Orrin C. had become a "Rock Star" (icon of your troupe)! I only saw my grandfather a half-dozen or so times during his life. All the trips were memorable, enjoyable, and influential in my character, but we lived so far, far away... in Washington or Alabama, or wherever my father's work took him during my early life. One time, we took "The Empire Builder" train all the way from Seattle to Minneapolis to see my father's family in Austin. How interesting for me it was to learn that Minnesotans called my favorite pastry "Longjohns" (I called them Maple Bars) ... Gee... It must be COLD there! Hahaha My Aunt Bernis is the one who sent me the negatives a few years back that show what I believe to be the original B-4-T Junior "Sky Scout". Still don't know if the pics are in circulation amongst the Pietenpol faithful, or I should try to revive them. I'd be willing to do my best to get a set of pics printed and mail them off in exchange for a set of the drawings from somebody. The drawings are something that our piece of the family lost when my father died. Nobody seems to know what happened to the ones we had... Seems at times to me that I became orphaned by the whole family in 1983, as none had ever lost a father before, and they couldn't understand the lonely position I was thrown into at that time, in light of my father having remarried several years prior. That month, managed to finish my finals for the college degree he wanted me to have and I went to work immediately, but I "crashed and burned" not long afterwards. Oh well.. as they say, "That's life! Take it or leave it!" To all... I wish the Pietenpol Bunch... Have a VERY Happy New year! -------- Pietenpol's Forever! Very nice, Don! Interesting how much your windshield distorts or vibrates in the slipstream - I'll bet you can't see that with your naked eyes. I've always wondered about ski-flying - how do you tell where the runway is for landing (or maybe it doesn't matter, if the snow is deep enough). Is it easy to find your way back to the airport, with everything white? What depth of snow do you require? So many questions, as I contemplate building a set of skis for my Piet. The wide angle setting let me get the whole airplane in the shot, but I imagine it would be disturbing from the pilot's seat, as it makes the wings appear to droop. I bought a headband mount yesterday, and I'll post another video when the winds settle down a bit. This camera setup has a lengthy learning curve, so it will take us a while to master all the features. Ben On 12/30/2012 7:53 AM, Don Emch wrote: > > Very nice Ben. Are you using a remote switch? From: "Don Emch" Thanks Skip! That's it. Makes a big difference. Jack... yeah I noticed how much the windshield distorts. I sure hope it isn't really doing that! I do notice after about 6 to 8 inches of snow the runway edges do tend to disappear. Not a problem at my strip, but at others that I am not familiar with it is a little difficult to see. I've noticed that some of the grass runways have older short lights. Those things tend to get covered by the snow... one of those would sure ruin my day! I've flown with about 10 to 12 inches and as long as it is powder it is not a problem. I'd say 3 to 8 inches of powder is optimal for these skis. I went out once last year with my daughter and it was up around 40 degrees and the snow was slushy at the end of winter and the wax probably had worn off. I couldn't get above about 20 mph on the runway and barely made it back to the hangar... lesson learned. Another time we only had about 3 inches. My dad and I flew to a local strip with a restaurant on a nice sunny day. While we were there the sun was busy outside. As we were getting in the plane I realized I could see the tops of the grass. It was a very long takeoff run! Back at our strip I landed in the shadows of the trees. Ha! Another lesson learned!
