Yep, Shad, that was all me and my torch... Ha! No way! I had a buddy weld it
with his tig welder. Someday I'd like to get one but until then I'm stuck with
my torch. I have seen torch welds in aluminum that look almost as nice. Kent

his materials and get practicing.

Ralph... I'm glad you were able to get out. It sure does break up the winter blahs
when you can get out and fly! I just bought an old set of wood Jacobsen
skis that still have Chief rigging on them. I have them all apart and am refinishing
them right now. I hope to have them on our Chief in the next week or
so. I'm anxious to try them! Gonna be tough to beat the Piet in the fun department
though!

I wanted to wish everyone on the list a Happy New Year. This list has been a
continuing source of information and inspiration. Folks like Bill Church, Mike
Cuy and Tom Bernie have been especially helpful to this first time builder.
I wish for you all good progress and safe flying in the new year.

For my C85 I need to rivet ms21047-L3 plate nuts (10-32) to the box to hold the
filter. Do I need drilled an3's to secure the filter with safety wire or will
the plate nuts suffice like lock nuts? Also, I assume I need a gasket between
the airbox and carb. Is there a gasket between the filter and airbox?
Thanks and Happy New Year!

Checked the manual and it appears instead of plate nuts they specify some kind
of locking zeus fastener. Would bolts and plate nuts work also?

HI Ralph,
We used to fly dad's champ off of Lake Kampeska. It would really be a cold day
here to be able to have skis; hope that doesn't happen. I used to pick up my wife
at her house on Lake Pelican, than fly to Watertown airport and drive to town.
Have a great new years.
Cheers,
Jim B.

Jack for something like that, just ask yourself what would happen if the
bolts came loose. Is it a catastrophic failure? For something like an air
filter, if it parted company with the airplane the only thing that might
happen is that your engine would breathe better. Besides, on my Continental
installations, the air filter will be readily obvious on preflight
inspection. I would use whatever you're comfortable with. One of the
advantages of experimental aircraft is you are not bound by regulations. Of
course, that is a two-edged sword, so you've got to think about the
consequences.
Having said that, I just walked over and loked at my Pietenpol. I secured
my Brackett Air Filter with AN3 bolts and locknuts.
