Praise the Lord! We got 0.7 inches of rain in McPherson, KS. I will gladly hold
off painting for a while until the humidity goes down. We are currently about
18 inches behind normal. I feel for you guys back East, but for us this is
a real blessing.

Michael,
Just wanted to say that I like your plywood wrap leading edge design. This
saves weight and eliminates a lot of sanding. One of the most arduous
tasks for me was shaping the leading edge. The plywood wrap shapes the LE
perfectly.
And I think Mr. Dewenter owes you an apology for attacking you the way he
did. Simply put, it was totally uncalled for.
Keep up the good work!

I find it strange that no asked me anything directly in this thread. I
thought for sure someone would want to know how I achieved such a light
weight.
Paul Donahue, (nightmare) specifically stated he does not share some
ideas on this list... he does not want to "...hang myself out like
that." That is a real shame...the environment here would effect the

Paul, (or anyone) if you are uncomfortable sharing new ideas, changes,
etc. here, please contact me directly. I am more than interested in
hearing about what you are guys are up to and what ideas you may have.
In the spirit of sharing, here are some HINTS for building 45# wing
sections:
1) Sitka spruce. This wood is getting harder to come by in spar
lengths/grade, but worth the effort.
2) Varnish only enough to protect the wood. Today's varnishes are
superior and will protect with minimal coverage. Resist the urge to
lather on multiple coats just for the glossy, smooth look. I sprayed on
a single thinned coat of spar urethane. Once dried, I sprayed the
entire structure with a water hose and inspected the wood. It was
completely sealed. Today's UV blocker paints and modern fabric also help
protect the wood. Drain holes will allow air circulation and aid in wood
health.
3) Correct size cable for the job. 3/32" for control, 1/8" for
drag/anti drag cables. No reason to go larger.
4) Swage on cable fittings. A thimble, nicopress sleeve, (only need one)
the extra cable around the thimble and into the nicopress sleeve and
some "thing" to keep the cable end from fraying, all add weight. ( for
each end of each cable done in this manner) Do some work and try to
locate and borrow swage tool. Well worth it. The fittings are not too
much more than others and you save ($ and #) on thimbles, sleeves...
5) Short turnbuckle bodies and cable ends.
6) Turnbuckle bodies and cable ends with the grooves for the retaining
clips. No need for wraps and wraps of safety wire.
7) Correct size 4130. Use what is required, no need to go thicker.
8) Light weight fabric. (1.7oz) These 100 MPH planes with today's
fabric and glues do not require anything heavier.
9) Paint only enough to protect the fabric from UV. This was easy for
me because I was not interested in a high gloss, showroom finish.
I can swage cables while I still have a swager, for those interested.

I may have mentioned in the past that I have found it a helpful Bible verse memorization
technique to put appropriate verses in various places on the aircraft
while it is under construction. I was not aware, however, that Jesus himself
was an Air Camper fan. A friend just pointed out to me a verse in Matthew,
specifically Matthew 28:20 where Jesus says: "Lo I am with you always..." Obviously
the translator misspelled the word "low" but, hey, we are not all perfect.

Subject: | Looking for North Carolina Builders! |
Hey Folks. My name is Randy Cary and I am new to the site as of Jan 26 of this
year. I have been to Lewisburg NC to see Chuck's project and he told me he thought
that there were several builders in central NC, near my home and work. If
anyone knows of these folks, or they are reading, how about a little information
as to how I could contact you. I have the bug and want to do my homework.
I enjoy reading the posts daily and am learning a lot! Thanks for the help!

Sorry, this is not another HINT Video...
It is an old NACA video on making wood propellers, I believe it is in three parts.
There may be some good tips in here for those considering making their own.
The propeller in the video is a slightly different scale then we need.

I was at my friend "the lathe guy" getting some bearings milled for the control
pulleys on my torque tube that I've been fabricating this week. When I produced
from my pocket the pulley and AN3 bolt that I was going to use to test the
fit of the bearing he asked me if the plans called for 3/32 cable from the torque
tube to the bellcrank (yes he is a homebuilder as well). I told him that
in fact the plans called for 1/8th cable. He informed me that I held in my hand
a pulley for 3/32. He was right! And now my torque tube has ears welded
on it to hold 3/32 pullies instead of 1/8th pullies. Ordering new pulleys is
no big deal but cutting off the ears that I carefully welded on to the torque
tube is - somewhat. I have re-done many things in the build process and am fully
prepared to re-do the ears, but.... I'd like to hear first if anyone with
a Piet has used 3/32 cable from stick to bellcrank for the elevators. Just asking...

Never Cuss rain, someone needs it.

Subject: | Re: Elevator Cables |
It is a general rule that ALL primary flight control cables be 1/8. Certainly
the elevator, your life depends on it. The rudder as well. Ailerons, per the plans,
are 3/32 and may not be as critical.
Of course, some on here feel that universal rules are made to be broken.

from my pocket the pulley and AN3 bolt that I was going to use to test the
fit of the bearing he asked me if the plans called for 3/32 cable from the
torque tube to the bellcrank (yes he is a homebuilder as well). I told him that
in fact the plans called for 1/8th cable. He informed me that I held in my
hand a pulley for 3/32. He was right! And now my torque tube has ears welded
on it to hold 3/32 pullies instead of 1/8th pullies. Ordering new pulleys is
no big deal but cutting off the ears that I carefully welded on to the torque
tube is - somewhat. I have re-done many things in the build process and am
fully prepared to re-do the ears, but.... I'd like to hear first if anyone with
a Piet has used 3/32 cable from stick to bellcrank for the elevators. Just
asking...

Scott-- I used 3/32" cables from the bellcrank to the elevators, for my rudder,
and ailerons. Just like the plans
show and my life has depended on them for 15 years now with no issues. I did
switch from ss to galvanized
after about 2 years of flying on the elevator cables though due to some itching
and chafing :) as it came thru the fabric.

I am thinking of a pietenpol purchase and was wondering what the performance of
an A65 was like in humid conditions here In Florida. I have only lived in the
State for a short while but never flown here. ALso, are there any Pietenpol owners
near Venice Florida?

Subject: | Looking for North Carolina Builders! |
Hi Randy,
Where in North Carolina are you?
Chuck Borsuk is doing a beautiful job building his Pietenpol and can
certainly be a big help to you. In addition, Wayne Schomp in Greensboro is
pretty far along, and Don Lane in Oriental has his Model A powered Pietenpol
flying now. I know Ted Stone is building one near Topsail Island. I've
seen Don's Piet but have not seen Wayne's or Ted's.
If you are near Raleigh or Apex I strongly recommend you join EAA Chapter
1114, which meets at Cox Field in Apex the third Saturday morning of each
month for a pancake breakfast and usually has interesting speakers. It is
the best EAA Chapter I've ever been a member of, and is very active. At
last count there were about 120 members and over 30 active projects under
construction, ranging from Chuck's Pietenpol to a Bearhawk, a Dyke Delta, a
couple of Sonexes, a couple of Zodiacs and numerous RV's of various types.
There are two Technical Counselors (I am one of them) and we are kept pretty
busy.
I'm at Smith Mountain lake, Virginia, which is just about 2-1/2 hours
northwest of Raleigh by car, or 31 minutes by RV-4 (an hour and a half by
Pietenpol). I'd be happy to show you my Pietenpol and take you up in it
(assuming you are not over 180 lbs) if you want to come up here. I live in
our hangar at the airport (W91) while building our house. Matt Paxton is
only about 45 minutes away with his Pietenpol near Lexington, Virginia and
might be able to come here if you come up to Smith Mountain Lake.
Good luck with your project. Have you ordered the plans yet? If
considering building a Pietenpol you should acquire and read the four Tony
Bingelis books, available from EAA. They will teach you nearly everything
you need to know to build a Pietenpol. You should also join the BPA, the
Brodhead Pietenpol Association, as its newsletter also contains valuable
information specific to building a Pietenpol.

Hey Folks. My name is Randy Cary and I am new to the site as of Jan 26 of
this year. I have been to Lewisburg NC to see Chuck's project and he told me
he thought that there were several builders in central NC, near my home and
work. If anyone knows of these folks, or they are reading, how about a
little information as to how I could contact you. I have the bug and want to
do my homework.
I enjoy reading the posts daily and am learning a lot! Thanks for the help!
