Well, I blew it on the wing panel weight...I did not include the aileron!

So, NOW as a complete ready to fly wing panel, it weighs in at 50#.

I've been flying my Piet with an A-65 for3 years here in Titusville,
Fl. Of course performance is better on a cool dry day, but it is still
acceptable on warm humid days. Mine weighs 700 pounds empty and I weigh
about#175, and have carried a passenger about my weight too. Find out
how much the airplane weighs, as there is quite a range. I grossed mine
at 1200 pounds and have flown it a gross a few times. If you are a big
guy make sure you fit, and that the airplane will still be in weight and
balance with you in the rear seat (the pilot sits a few feet aft of the CG)

| Subject: | List of mistakes (so far) |

For those builders who are just getting started, I am passing along a list
of mistakes I have made (so far). I have completed much of the fuselage,
numerous metal fittings, some tail feathers, landing gear, and the turtle
deck. Do with this info as you like. In another post Ill hit on the "few"
      things I did really right!

-AN3 bolts will not go through a 3/16" hole in metal fittings - you need a
#10 drill bit. Luckily #10 is larger than 3/16".

-Going straight from plans, (and failing to think ahead) the straight axle
landing gear fittings bolts and the 2" ash blocks running side-side on the
fuselage floor are in conflict. Knowing this I would have modified the
metal fittings (as other smart folks did). I epoxied the 2" wood spreader to
the fuse floor long before thinking about the LG.

-The metal fittings (wing strut attach points) that protrude through the LG
fittings need to sit a pocket in the fuselage floor (belly side). The plans
clearly show this - but I failed to see this detail initially.

-I made 3 of the 5 tail feather parts in 2005 before I ever heard of West
Coast Piets! The gussets sit in the rabbit / routed "inner" portion of the
corners, not "ON TOP" of the outer edges

I routinely visit West Coast Piets web site and look at other builders' fine
      work before starting each component.

-Mashing (sorry, forming) 4130 tube ends. THINK a little before that second
end is formed - make sure the alignment is right when you put the tube into
the vice. I made the rudder bar support twice!

-The small "L" shaped tail brackets - I thought I was being "smart" when I
made 8 sets of "matching pairs". I drilled the holes two pieces at a time
(in a small jig I made). I also thought it was smart to "offset the bolt
holes off the centerline". Then I bent all 16 pieces the same direction
-OOOPS-I discovered each matched pair needs one bent "left" and one to the
"right" due to the holes being offset.

-Bench vices - get the biggest one that works in your shop space. 2" wide
.090" 4130 is tough stuff and a big vice helps! Forming 3/4" tubing is also
easier in a large vice. Anyone need a 3" vice?

-It's hard to find 9/32" AN bolts. Plan on AN-5 (5/16).

As I make more goofs, I'll keep you all posted so you might avoid them
during your build. Likewise, I'll post some things I think really helped
      along with some photos.

Michael, I'm not as far along as I should be. My wife has had a lot of
sickness and I have been neglecting the Piet more than I would have
liked. The wing panels are complete except for the rib bracing and the
pitot tube installation. The tail pieces are complete. (This is all
uncovered!!!) The fuselage is getting there. I have installed the
rudder PEDALS (I cannot immagine a rudder bar. I have never even seen
an airplane with one -- much less tried to fly one.) Along with the
pedals I have installed the toe-operated brake master cylinders.
Incidentally, I am not putting controls in the front seat. I have heard
of too many instances of interference from un-knowing passengers, one,
that I know of, causing the airplane to crash. I don't think I will
have other pilots in the front that much. If they are there they will
have to be content to just ride. The fuselage is perhaps 3/4 finished.
I still have to build the landing gear. I have the wheels with axels
and brakes but they are not installed. Also, I have to have my welder
make my engine mount. I have the material but no jig built as yet.
Maybe I can fly before the end of the summer. I'm not concerned about
the covering and painting. Been down that road with a Piper Pacer I
rebuilt in the '80's. We'll see. Love to see some pictures of your
      project. Gotta go, Chuck

Randy, my name is Chuck Campbell and live in Winston-Salem. My Piet is
about 3/4 complete. The wings and tail surfaces are ready for covering
and the fuselage is about 3/4 finished. Haven't put it on wheels yet
and haven't gotten the engine mount done. Hope to get it covered and
flying by the end of the summer. But am not holding my breath on that.

| Subject: | Attack? (what are we doping here?) |

      Bob,

I apologize for missing your point, the one in your "what are we doing"
thread. Apparently, I couldn't see it for the awful way it was presented.
I mean, you referred to Michael as an "entity" for crying out loud!

And, I apologize for offending you by characterizing your "what are we
doing!!!" thread as an attack on Michael Perez. Whatever it was or
whatever your intentions were, it sounded WAY wrong. It sounded like you
were calling into questions his skills, judgement, and integrity. You
seemed to imply that he was profiting from selling his questionably "safe"
information and putting people in potential danger. And, you implied that
the Piet list folks were wrong for "allowing" it to happen. With a little
more thought, you could have gotten answers to your three questions without
      offending a lot of people.

Your thread offended many and wasted a lot of people's time. And now you
have offended me again with your passive aggressive subject line "Attack?
(what are we doping here?)". Is this your way of calling me a dope for
calling you out publicly for your inconsiderate treatment of Michael.
Sounds like it, but maybe you're making a different point. It's so hard
      to tell.

Think about it sir. And, yes, you still owe Michael Perez a profound
apology. No matter how you spin it, he was offended.

| Subject: | Attacking in a new direction? (No doping here just latex) |

OK after several years of sitting on the fence I made the leap. I purchased John
      Kuhfahl's Pietenpol project.

John has fixed everything right. He did all the technical stuff. John did a a great
job, he pulled off anything that he thought needed work and redid it. His
standards are very high. I am very fortunate to have been in a position in my
life where I was able to get this great plane. I happened to have the money,
a place to work on the plane and my wife was in a good mood (I bought her a new
car. while I drive a tiny old Corolla and a 24 year old Suburban.)

John overhauled the Continental A65. It is a total job, carb and mags were overhauled
as well. John has a very good reputation here in this area for his engine
work, especially on small Continentals. He totally restored an Ercoupe to
      show winning quality.

It is my intention to complete what needs to be done to fly safely, then I will
finish assembly and go fly. Then I will come back and look at such things as
paint jobs, upholstery and other trim items. I do want to put heel brakes in the
front cockpit. Later, for now I will do what I need to to get it flying. In
a month, I will be moving out of this blasted apartment into a place with a garage.
I will bring the plane there so that I can get work done every day. I hope
to have it pretty much ready in three months.

John and I have been friends for years and we feel like it has been kept "within
the family." I hangar my Bonanza at 8t8 where John lives and has his hangar.
I am buying a hangar there and have many friends there. Indeed the plane was
begun by the 8T8 EAA chapter (35) and when they stalled, it was taken over by
the chapter president. He completed it about 1975. It was later sold to anouther
8T8 pilot. He flew it until about 1993 and then stuck it in his garage. John
bought it from him about 2 years ago and started work. I don't think it has
ever been based anywhere but 8T8.

Steve, this is great. And congratulations to John, too, for finding
his project a new home that is a familiar home. I got to see it a
couple of years ago when he was just beginning the restoration. It
sounds like he's done a nice job of it. Cheers, Ken

great job, he pulled off anything that he thought needed work and redid it. His
standards are very high. I am very fortunate to have been in a position in
my life where I was able to get this great plane. I happened to have the money,
a place to work on the plane and my wife was in a good mood (I bought her a
new car. while I drive a tiny old Corolla and a 24 year old Suburban.)

as well. John has a very good reputation here in this area for his engine
work, especially on small Continentals. He totally restored an Ercoupe to
      show winning quality.

finish assembly and go fly. Then I will come back and look at such things as
paint jobs, upholstery and other trim items. I do want to put heel brakes in
the front cockpit. Later, for now I will do what I need to to get it flying.
In a month, I will be moving out of this blasted apartment into a place with a
garage. I will bring the plane there so that I can get work done every day. I
hope to have it pretty much ready in three months.

I am buying a hangar there and have many friends there. Indeed the plane was
