Terry,
Consider looking for one at a Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. They sell all kinds
of stuff leftover from remodels, etc, and often at very low prices. A quick
google search should tell you if there's one in your area.

Terry I agree with Tools, very effective. Do a couple of "practice" runs
because they cut a lot of wood very fast. Even with the taper bit you will
still need to touch the edges with a sander.

Hey Terry!
Nice looking jig!
Search for laminate trimmer router bits. They're a flush cutting router bit
with an end mounted bearing. Will work easiest in a router table, will have
to run around one side and then flip over, but will go REALLY fast and
effective.
For the discerning craftsman, some of then will even put in a slight
bevel...
Designed to cut counter top laminates flush.

Tools and Jack,
I am inclined to use the flush router bit with my router and table. Fortunately,
I have an unusable rib made from jig 1.0 that needs trimming. If I muck that
one up, no great loss. I was going to hang it on the wall, so no big deal.

Second on thew ReStore. Check there often if you have one, stuff
moves through ReStores really fast. Our local one often has
unannounced 25% or 50% off days. I got a perfectly functional oven
for the farmhouse for $50. Also a great place to pick up a beer
fridge for the hangar.

You'd have to do some searching on the EAA website, but there was an excellent
article about a year or two ago on building a simple manometer and how to use
it for the purpose of verifying or calibrating an airspeed indicator.
While I haven't taken an airspeed indicator apart, I have taken apart a lot of
very finely calibrated and intricate inner working pressure gages and metrology
stuff (dial indicators, co ax indicators, last word style indicators, pressure
gages for leak down testers) and they aren't that complicated or difficult
to work on.
If you find with the manometer that the gage is bad, I wouldn't hesitate to take
it apart and see if some dust jammed up the works somehow. Might be as simple
as a little compressed air once the back is off.
Good luck!

Dan I hate to say it but you probably hosed your airspeed indicator when you
put the vacuum on it. I got some water in the pitot of my old Cessna 140
many years ago and tried sucking it out by mouth. I got the water out, but
the airspeed indicator was never the same. I tried to fix it but ended up
buying a new one. They are very sensitive and easily damaged. When you
applied suction you probably deformed the return spring. Now I never blow
directly into the pitot tube, or apply suction at all.

The very same thing happened to me with my Stinson. Mud Dauber in the pitot, removed
it with welding rod and then asked my inexperienced aircraft partner to
blow AT the pitot while I looked at the ASI (lessoned learned: be the person
gently blowing air at your pitot, not the one watching the ASI). I watched with
horror and before I could say anything his mouth was covering the end of the
pitot and he did his best Louis Armstrong impression.
ASI went to the shop twice before we gave up on it and replaced it.
Along with the new one we purchased a nice pitot cover.

The router table and flush cut bit made my ribs look a professional built them.
I find myself veering away from power tools as each assembly becomes more finished
as I have too much invested in the part at that point. I'm afraid a jerk
or miss will rip them up You'll learn to use hand tools with more care and
end up loving the way they work the wood without all the noise and dust.

Me three. There's a huge misconception that power tools enable you to do nicer
work, and makes it easier.
Generally, not true. Learning to use the power tool is about the same as learning
to use the hand tool, but burns up a lot more material in the process! Very
generic use of them, like to rip rough stock to width, is an exception obviously.
A nice little hand plane (think Stanley 100 series, or the 60 1/2) will do TONS
of work, easily and effortlessly and will never risk an entire assembly due to
one small glitch.
You tend to sneak up on the right size, or whatever and can correct as you go.
Once you're a little proficient, it's many times faster than reconfiguring the
power tool, cheaper than buying the tooling, etc.
When I first started woodworking I realized I could afford the nicest chisels made
on earth (hand forged Barr chisels, about $80 ea, albeit expensive, amortized
over 60 years, cheap - then they'll outlive my son, and maybe his) which can
do about ANY operation, while the nicest bandsaw, tablesaw, shaper combined,
in AMATEUR grade would run over a grand, without tooling. Very few people have
quit woodworking because of a chisel injury as well, not so with tablesaws...
Professional power tools in the same class as the chisels, about $15 grand
EACH...
These days, whatever hand tool you're interested in gaining some insight on, just
go to youtube. Handsaws, linear stroke. Hand planes, lap the bottom flat.
Chisels, sharpen the BACK as well... etc.
I'm pretty sure I could trim all those ribs with my $3 stanley 102 (flea market
find) quicker than most could set up a router table, get the bit height set (if
you're using a bevel), make some practice runs, etc. AND I could do it in
my living room watching TV, clean the mess up with a rat tail and a dustpan and
carry on a conversation and drink a beer safely.
Using these versatile, small and affordable hand tools is a nice cartharsis as
well.

had it but subsequent flight revealed no improvement. So then I disconnected
the lines at the instruments and blew air through the lines that run from
the wing root to the instruments. I thought I detected some dust being
ejected. A subsequent flight revealed no improvement. ARGGGG. What now, a
new airspeed? Could that dust have affected the instrument like that?

Are the Air Camper's ribs the same as the Sky Scouts?

During a series of bounce and goes during my tailwheel training in a Champ, the
airspeed suddenly dropped to zero. The instructor yelled "I have the plane" and
shoved the stick forward while starting a go around. (it was not that frenzied)
He took it around and brought it in just a little hot and let the airspeed
drop to land.
When we stopped there was a mud dauber (or yellow jacket) stuck in the Pitot. Message
The Mud Daubers are out to get us.
be sure you Blow gently, when you check. You can damage the airspeed with your
breath.
Years ago, I had a grandson shoot a little air from the air hose into my pitot
as he walked by, $180 airspeed overhaul later it was fixed.
BTW what I have used to check lines like the Pitot and fuel lines is a piece of
Weed trimmer string. Stiff enough to knock out a dirt dauber nest, flexible enough
to follow the tube an soft enough not to scratch the pipe.

I wrecked a pristine Stinson 108 in 1973 from an insect stopping up the fuel cap
gas tank vent. It quit me on takeoff (30-40 feet high) and I was slow and didn't
have enough airspeed to break the descent rate. Lesson learned. Busted landing
gear, smashed the belly a little too.

Paper that size can expand or shrink based on humidity levels to account for that

Couldn't stand it... I changed the subject line =3Bo) Terry=2C I'm with th
e others who suggested a drum or belt/disk sander. Should work quickly to
get the ribs to final shape. I have the Harbor Freight belt/disk sander th
at someone else mentioned and it is truly a "Chinese Army knife"- I use it
for lots of things. However=2C if the other poster was referring to the sm
all adjustable metal angle that sits near the downstream end of the belt as
the "guard"=2C I sure wouldn't remove it. If you're trying to sand a smal
l piece of something and the belt grabs it=2C that metal angle keeps it fro
m getting swept away or tossed across the room. I use that metal angle as
a stop to hold the workpiece where I want it on the belt (the middle area t
ends to wear faster than the edges=2C and when I'm hogging material off in
a hurry=2C I can bear down on the work with it held against that stop and t
he belt won't strip it away from me.)
By the way=2C Air Camper ribs without undercamber are just wrong =3Bo)

Scout has one of those little flapper thingies on the end of the pitot to cover
it when the airplane isn't moving through the air. Keeps rain and bugs out (or
so they say).

I think power tools can really help, but in my case they can ruin a part twice
as fast as a hand tool if you don't practice on some scrap material first.

Matt,
You didn't say which airfoil, although it really doesn't matter. The easy way is
probably Gary Boothe's. However, if you want to make sure everything is in the
right proportion, and you have the plot coordinates for the airfoil, I can
send you instructions on how to resize on your computer any airfoil to whatever
chord length you desire.
So as to not clog up the forum, if you think it would help, feel free to contact
me off line.

Hey John,
Where'd you get that great drill guide? I was wanting something like that but didn't
know where to get one. I would love to get one like yours!
Thanks for the info,
Mark
