I'm motivated to point out that the people doing all the talking aren't
doing much building.
Quit the yak-yak-yaking, get to work, and post pictures of your progress
as "motivation."
I swear to god, I feel like the water cooler guard.
I just want to point out that I wrote 3 sentences (4 if you count this
one) and it's all the motivation you need.

So Ryan,
2 (or 12) positive posts are too much and not very interesting, but 'water cooler

This forum is much better served by the former than the latter.

Subject: | Southeast piet builders. |
Not sure if this is really the kind of thing most people here would be interested
in, but considering I'm sure there's quite a few readers that don't post alot,
thought I'd pass it along.
A few years ago I hosted an 'event' for guys in the southeast that restore and
use old american made wood working machines. As a group (like this one, basically
active members of an internet forum, no formal 'membership' or anything),
we have a big get together each year in Illinois. However, you have to get a
hotel, there's a banquet and it's based at a museum, so there's a fee, it can
get expensive. However, lots of eye candy and we'd arrange "demos" for some
of the sorts of things that group does, that isn't very easy to learn on your
own (pouring babbit, etc), there was a small informal swap meet and loading equipment
so people could bring machines for other people (ie help with shipping
basically).
To make mine different, I focused on making it a practical event. Bring a project,
find someone to help you, use my machines and get something done you might
otherwise have to hire out. Machining rough castings for a machine restore,
making parts (missing left hand threaded elevation screws), brazing broke cast
iron parts back together, we actually even cast some aluminum parts (belt sander
idler wheels), etc. I just let everyone crash where they may. Couches,
air mattresses, motorhome, a few friends offered bedrooms. We just ate on the
property, passed the hat, went into town and got meat, fired up the grill.
I'm doing it again, kind of... Folks have been pestering me to do it again, but
I'm desparate to get my hangar and new shop up before I do. It's been a super
rainy winter so haven't made the progress I intended. So, since folks just
want a reason to get together, I decided to make it a hangar raising, but anyone
to wants to play with stuff, or arrange their own demos, that's fine.
I figure a dozen guys can remove the tin and trusses from a nearby chicken house
I've been given, easier than just me and my son. I don't want people to come
and just work, just pitch in a little here and there if you don't mind.
Insofar as airplane builders, I've got all the woodworking machinery you could
want to build a plane, feel free to bring your spars, wing rib stock, whatever,
and mill yourself up whatever you need.
You can also play around with gas and tig welding.
I've got a machine shop as well if you need parts milled, or just want some help
learning how to use a lathe or mill. If someone wants to make up a jig for
general use amongst the group, that would be fine.
There's small private grass strips within a couple miles, you can fly in. I'll
have an A&P(IA) (he owns one of the strips) around if you need some help or advice.
He's finishing up a Cub right now. If you fly in and need a car to get
around, no problems. Plenty of room to camp, crash in the house, whatever or
where ever. There's hotels within a few miles too.
If there's enough airplane people, we'll work on my Piet. Also have a steel tube
Piet like homebuilt project we can mess around with. Need to reverse engineer
a wing rib jig for that as well. Even have a couple Model a blocks we could
clean up, bore cylinders, whatever. Bring along whatever project you have
and want some help with. Get everyone going, a wing would be ribstitched in a
day.
Don't know if Dick N got a project lined up for sun and fun, but if you need to
get it to him, I think I'm along his travel path to there, it could be staged
here (I'll have room if we get a hangar up!).
Open for thoughts. Would like a rough head count, but don't really care if someone
just shows, or doesn't.
The date is from about thurs to sun, 21 to 24 march. The place is 335 Castlerock
Ln, Chickamauga GA 30707 (Chatt TN intersection of interstates 24, 59 and 75).
Let me know here, or by phone 423 580 1383, email n0kkj@yahoo.com or don't let
me know, doesn't matter!

14 inches plus of snow? Yikes! And I don't want to go out in my unheated shop when
it 40 degrees out. I feel like a piker! Hope you warm up and thaw out soon.

Crew, perhaps I have missed something here, but with regard to trimming-
gussets, regardless if they are on the ribs, fuselage, etc...
I did no trimming at all on any gusset on my entire aircraft. I just positi
oned the gusset so it would not overhang the edge.

Tom, I feel your pain. We had 8 inches of snow yesterday.
Temperature this morning driving to work was 2 degrees (Fahrenheit).
My poor hangar heater would be completely overmatched. But the good
news -- and, no, I don't own stock in the company -- is the Stewart
Covering system. I was able to finish rib stitching all the control
surfaces this weekend and began applying finishing tapes in our nice,
warm basement. Not a hint of fumes. Just the aroma of hot coffee as
I whiled away the blizzard working on elevators, ailerons, etc.
Cheers, Ken

I never said anything about the value of one versus the other.
I think (part of) his point was that we understood you wanted to motivate
people the first time you said it....and the second time, and the third
time, and the fourth time, etc.
Belaboring the point, positively or not, doesn't accomplish much (unless
you thought we still didn't understand your reasoning).
With that being said, your pictures clearly illustrated how you went about
capstrip forming, so kudos there.

With 14 inches of snow on the ground and more coming down - it will take a

So Ryan,
2 (or 12) positive posts are too much and not very interesting, but 'water
cooler guard' posts are better? I definitely disagree.
This forum is much better served by the former than the latter.

Hey Tools
I just got a project for SNF, it will be a Pietenpol fuselage, so if anyone
out there is thinking about building one and you want to see how it is done
come by the Wood building shop and help out.

I have been working on my air scoops for my Corvair for the past few
days. Trying to design it without much to go on made the task somewhat
more difficult. Thanks to help from Gary Boothe, I finally got the job
done today. Gary told me he had 35 to 40 hours in his. I doubt I did
that well. I was worried about rolling the wire into the leading edge,
but as Gary told me "That's the easiest part".
Tomorrow I start the firewall forward cowling construction. I'm hoping
that goes faster than the eyebrows. I have ordered a Cloudcars prop from
Jay Anderson. By the time the prop is done, I should be ready for first
engine start. Then its, cover the fuselage and paint.
Attached are a couple of photos of the eyebrows.

Thanks Ken.
I'm glad to hear that you are in the rib stitching phase, how far along
are you? I initially had help, but finally wound up doing most of the
stitching myself. Hearing the comments about cold hangars got me to
thinking about rib stitching last summer when the outside temps were
over 110 deg. I had to start work in the hanger before sunup to avoid
the heat. Even though I am in a heated hanger, we don't turn the heat on
all the time. As long as the outside temps are above 40 I can normally
tough it out. I still need to prime the wings, tailfeathers and control
surfaces, but I wont start until I get the cowling done and the engine
ready for start. By then the severe cold should be gone.

Rick, I'm making steady progress.
I've covered and stitched all the small pieces. I need to complete the
finish taping on those parts. I haven't decided yet whether to bring
the wings home to cover, stitch, and finish in the basement. It is a
walk-out basement, which makes it feasible. I may just wait until
spring and do them in the hangar. The fuselage won't be covered until
the engine and firewall forward systems are in place.
Meanwhile, I've gotten the bottom end of the Corvair back from Roy's
Garage with his fifth bearing installed. The heads are due back from
a different shop in the next week. The carb (an MA3 off a Cessna 140)
is out for overhaul. So I expect to begin assembling the engine
within the next few weeks. If all goes well, my hope is to take it to
the Corvair College in Chino for first run. That will depend on how
far along I am by that point, as well as the fit between work
obligations and the specific dates for that Corvair College.
Progress on running controls and wiring from the cockpit to the
firewall has basically stopped until the weather warms up. I'm
looking forward to getting back to that, as progress on those tasks
has a nice visceral sense to it. I'm glad to see your progress on
eyebrows and cowling. Those give me both trepidation and hope. I
suspect I won't be to that point until well into summer or fall.
There's no chance for flying the Piet to Brodhead this year. If I come
in 2013, it will be in the Pacer again. I have my fingers crossed for
the Piet's Brodhead debut in '14. That seems pretty doable at this
point.
Cheers, Ken
