I feel really bad it took me so long to figure out my problems with
uploading to the web host servers. Every time I would make a change it would
take over 24 hrs to upload with my computer crashing multiple times along
the way. Couple that with the technology changed and I just didn't want to
learn how to code HTML websites. All I can say now is thank goodness for
simple FTP file transfer software and to some new web page software I am
able to once again upload to the host servers.
Sorry again to all the people who have sent pictures or tried to view new
ones while I procrastinated, mostly by building an airplane, to fix my
issues. I'll be adding some pictures ever now and then as I dig my out of
the hole and try to work on the plane too.

Oscar, the port allows me access to the fuel shut off valve as well as the front
rudder pedals. The access hole is covered with a wood plug that exactly fits
the opening. The plug in turn is attached to a metal plate the bolts to the firewall.
The cover is easy to remove and once installed is invisible from inside
the cockpit. I resisted doing this for some time as I was concerned about the
appearance, but I was more concerned about access to the fuel valve on my front
tank.
After Kevin Purtee's incident, my friend Jim Hacklin decided he needed to pull
his front fuel tank on his nearly completed Piet in order to install a better
sump. Since he didn't have a firewall access port, and couldn't reach the fuel
line disconnect from outside the cockpit, he had to crawl inside. If you can
imagine crawling inside the front pit, rolling on your back on the skinny front
seat with your legs hanging over the side. Once the tank was free, he had to
then extracate himself. No one was home, he couldn't reach his cell phone, but
he had to get out or die. He said the longer he waited the worse it was getting,
so he had to get out one way or another. He obviously got out to tell the
tale, but that convinced me to add the access port.

Gary,
Jim told me that when he hooked up the original fuel tank shut off
controls the fuselage was upside down on saw horses. It was not much of
a problem too crawl underneath and reach up to the valve. It was an
entirely different story when the fuselage was on its gear. Before I
installed the firewall I tried to reach forward to touch the fuel line
attachment and the valve while standing on a ladder along side the
fuselage. I quickly realized that this wasn't going to work, my arms
weren't long enough. I remember seeing a photo that Walt Evans had
posted sometime ago of his firewall with the access port, so I always
had this idea in the back of my mind.
Being a woodworker, I had some homemade thin chisels made from hacksaw
blades. I used these to carefully cut out the access hole. The wood
cover is actually the same piece I cut out with the same grain
orientation. There really is no kerf cut so the fit was so tight I had
to sand slightly to allow for the varnish and wood expansion. As I said
the plug is barely visible from inside the cockpit except for the small
nutplates that secure the cover.

I found the hole on the floor of the front seat up next to the firewall very helpful.
Was able to sit underneath the airplane and get my hands on both sides
of the firewall with minimal trouble.
I will do the same thing on the rebuild.
Same function as Rick's, just a different location.

Picture is worth a thousand words, I guess. Here's a pic showing my vertical stabilizer
offset (about 1/2") and another showing the washers on the top two engine
mount points. This doesn't say much because everybody seems to be making
their mounts differently, but the point is that downthrust and offset to the
right really helped Scout get to a nearly hands- and feet-off cruise trim condition.

Subject: | Eliminating Prop Artifact in videos |
Since so many videos have been posted over the past week I did a little internet
searching to see what options there for reducing the prop artifact in videos.
Here is one man's solution that seems to work pretty well.

Just thought I would pass it along.

Subject: | Re: first airplane ride |
and that is what it's all about!! The reason I am passionate about working with
cadets in Civil air patrol is because I am afraid this generation of young people
is going to start believing that Nintendo is the real thing. Every time I
see one of our cadets get there first ride in a glider or powered airplane, there
face tells the whole story. This was a great video, thanks Oscar
