It was not much of a problem too crawl underneath and reach up to the valve. It was an entirely different story when the fuselage was on its gear. Before I installed the firewall I tried to reach forward to touch the fuel line attachment and the valve while standing on a ladder along side the fuselage. I quickly realized that this wasn't going to work, my arms weren't long enough. I remember seeing a photo that Walt Evans had posted sometime ago of his firewall with the access port, so I always had this idea in the back of my mind. Being a woodworker, I had some homemade thin chisels made from hacksaw blades. I used these to carefully cut out the access hole. The wood cover is actually the same piece I cut out with the same grain orientation. There really is no kerf cut so the fit was so tight I had to sand slightly to allow for the varnish and wood expansion. As I said the plug is barely visible from inside the cockpit except for the small nutplates that secure the cover. Thanks for the comments on my photos of my piet project, subject motivation, that was well appreciated. I am trying to work out my work schedule so I can make it to Brodhead this year and meet some of you . I was wondering if any one could tell me the space between the bottom v of wooden axle and the brake on the wheel? I am going to cut the 1 1/2 inch tubing and do not want to cut it to short, I dont know how much room to leave for the bungee cord. Your comments are appreciated. Larry, I think that a lot has to do with your brake design, type of wheels, and anti-rotation device, but, if you put the ties on the inside, you will have two wraps of 1/2" bungee on the outside. I would think that 1 1/2 - 2" would be sufficient. Since you are at this particular stage, could you post a pic of the lower front of your fuselage (fuselage). Im not at that stage yet. But little confused on how the lower brackets are attached to hold the bottom and lower sides together. A picture would sure help me . Larry, on mine, the forward end of the V-block (which is the closest to the brake disc) is 2.50" inboard of the brake disc. I wouldn't want it any closer because even though the bungee cord tends to lay pretty close to the V and leaves an inch or so gap between the V and the brake, you need ALL of that space and more to wrap the bungees. Beautiful work as usual, Chuck. One of the best things I ever did was take you up on the most perfect morning for flying I've ever seen (glassy smooth air, calm winds and 100 mile visibility) and getting you bitten by the Pietenpol Bug. Not that I can take credit for your interest - you were already interested in building a Pietenpol before that morning, but I like to think that somehow I gave you the nudge to get started building. Thanks Jack. You hit it on the head. The interest was there, but there is no way I would have jumped in without that ride. You along with a number of others on this list have been true ambassadors of the Pietenpol. We all thank you. For some new to the list, I have included a link I found when searching for info about the Pietenpol. There are also two old newsletters from our EAA chapter with good stories from Jack's experiences flying his Piet. These are how I first discovered Jack was living close by. I gave him a call out of the blue and he graciously invited to take a ride. Good reading. Enjoy! http://www4.ncsu.edu/~kdebord/pietcon.html Chuck 989CB Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=395546#395546 Attachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/ap_april_03_167.pdf http://forums.matronics.com//files/ap_march_03_130.pdf

Thanks Chuck. That does help. It seems odd that its not designed so the fitting ties together the bottom wood 1x . But I guess the motor mount does a good job keeping the forward fuselage nice and solid. Wasn't so good for me. I missed out on seeing your sky scout, enjoying both yours and Gary's company and I had to mow the lawn because I was here.
