Subject: | Aileron Horn Question |
I'm finishing up welding my aileron horns (to plans), getting ready to attach,
and was wondering what folks have done (if anything) with the front opening (where
it attaches to the aileron spar) in regards to preventing water intrusion?
The same goes for the cable attachment point at the end? Do most try to make
the horns air tight, or leave open and use the lower cable attachment as a drain
in case water does get in?
Thanks,
Steve

Subject: | Aileron Horn Question |
Hi Steve,
Excellent question about the openings in the horns. I left mine open and just
made sure that I sprayed a good amount of
zinc chromate primer (spray can) in that opening and then rotated the horn in my
hands until the paint was dripping out the
ends.
The nice part is that most all of our Pietenpols are hangared (or will be once
completed) so the only real rain they will see is
overnight at a fly in. I rather like having the openings in the aileron horns
so they can dry out on a nice, hot sunny day following an overnight
thunderstorm at an air show or fly-in.

Ditto what Mike said. The only thing I did different was to use epoxy
primer rather than zinc-chromate.

Steve, I was able to seal around the horns with a patch. A little Ekobond on the
horn and a little fabric patch up the sides some sealed them nicely. (Elevator
horn in picture, but all horns were done the same. Only time will tell if they
will stay that way, the fabric may separate from the horn over the years.

I would imagine whatever water finds it's way into the horn, will find it's way
out through the bottom cable connection hole, as you mentioned.

Hi Steve,
As usual Mike and Jack have the most experience and the best answers (my opinion
anyway).
But Allen Rudolfs Piet is still at Brodhead and I believe it was built in 1934
with a 1932 model A engine and is still being flown, I don't how much as Allen
has passed on, but I have seen it several times and it looks like it still has
all its original control horns and parts. Its only 79 years old so wouldn't
worry to much about the opening in the horns.
Cheers,
Jim B.

Tail surfaces are repaired. Engine ran at Corvair College 24 in South Carolina
in November. Fuel tank is complete. Left wing panel woodwork is complete.
Framing up right wing now.
I've recovered to pretty near 100% - flying for work and pleasure, running, etc.
I'll miss Brodhead, Gardiner. I've got work obligations and, frankly, Shelley
& I are about to get furloughed during the sequester. That's a big chunk of income.
Breaks my heart to miss Brodhead. Really wanted to see everyone and wanted to
have the chance to talk to people about the accident. I did a thorough write-up
for the BPA newsletter, though. I think Doc will publish that in April. That'll
have to suffice until 2014.

Way to go Axel! Your work looks like you work in wood for a living. Hang in there
with the furlough thing, its got to get better. I will miss you at Brodhead
as it appears this may be the first year that I will actually get to attend.

Hi Kevin and Shelley;
Really wanted to see you guys again and talk about Piets. Good to see all t

emble my wings and it was good to see your photos; very instructive.
Keep up the good work on FBG and yourself to 100%.
Hopefully see you before long.
