post from the wing bow by about an inch and a half or so. I drilled a 3/16"

of the wing bow. The height of the posts is set to allow the wing to pivot through
a full 360 degrees without bumping into the stands.

angle of the wing while I'm working.

For the record, I have also started on this modification on my Piet. I am using
the book "Eat this, Not that!" as a beginning guideline along with time walking,
biking and some calestenics. This modification will do more to give me a greater
passenger capacity than just about any that I can make. It will also improve
the aft CG problem. I should be able to increase my load carrying capability
by 20 pounds over time.

Hi Paul, thanks for asking.- Building has slowed because I have been spen
ding time taking ground school and other activities. I have also slowed on
my purchasing of build material as I am saving up funds to start flight tra
ining. (I believe I will get started in June.)- This past Saturday we ado
pted a beagle from a shelter, so we have been spending time with him.
To answer your question, I only need to make my exhaust pipes, heat muff an
d mount the prop. to run the engine. The prop is being made by Jay Anderson
.- The major things that come to mind to complete the project are to fabr
icate the engine cowling, fabricate the cabane diagonals to set wing positi
on, fabricate wing cross cables, wind screens, fuel tank cowling...those ar
e the major items. I also need to purchase a hand held radio, head sets, et
c. which will come later when I can free up the funds to do so.- I am sur
e there are hundreds of little items that still need attention, but those w
ill be handled once I get out to the hangar.- (Not this summer as origina
lly planned.) All other major tasks are complete and the plane is ready for
final assembly.
My current plan is to keep the plane disassembled at home and continue to p
ick away at it as best I can while taking the hangar rent I would be spendi

Get some Cub time if you can. The sight lines are the same and and so
are many of the flight characteristics. A C-140 is decent but flies a
bit "more modern" than a Piet. You will want to get used to more adverse
yaw and being beat to death in a lower wing loading. After flying
502Rocket most of last summer I got the Cub out for the month of August
for my flight review and a couple of flour bomb drops with the daughter.
Two observations:
1. As well as theRocket flies, the Cub flies better (sacrilege!)
2. The safest place to be in a flour bomb contest is the target. You are
certain to not be hit. On one of my passes, daughter Rachel dropped the
flour bomb and it got stuck in the Cub landing gear for a couple of
seconds before releasing. Away the bomb went, over the barn and into a
copse of trees where the kids were playing a bean bag game. We observed
a white "tree burst" like something out of the Ardennes during the
Battle of the Bulge. Next came a bunch if kids, running and laughing,
with their new white hair.
theRocket and I will be out this evening enjoying some beautiful
weather. We have been out a couple of times this year on a patrol with
Tom Brown in his Piet as well. The two planes make a mighty fine sight
in the Wisconsin skies.
I have stated this before I think, but if people need a bit of Cub time
let me know. Always looking for an excuse to dust her off.

Gardiner,
No argument there. The toe dance applies to all all airplanes with the
little wheel in the back. But, you also have a gozillian hours vs
someone that has 2. I think in that situation it is a good idea to get
at least some time in a similar configuration. I know it made my
transition easier to go from a Cub to the Piet.

I would simply like to applaud the even handed calm nature of this entire debate.
i have been flamed for simply asking questions that there should be easy answers
to like, has anybody actually weighed a model A engine since 1932? yep 244lbs
complete W/magneto I've heard. anyway, you guys are doing a heck of a job
preserving the spirit of EAA E for experimental. we live in a time with a wealth
of choices in new materials that mr pietenpol would recognize as the amazing
bounty that it is. revel in it. we live in the best country in the world.
keep building.

hey guys,
I have a 48' Cessna 140 metalized wing I might sell... I am in CA.
Been stuck in an annual for a while... (my fault, not the planes...)
Any interest out there. 15k ish.... it's polished, not painted...
I am building my Pietenpol in the same hanger.
Needs to go before I can start my wing.
Dave

Subject: | Re: Turnbuckle Cleanup |
Craig,
FWIW, I use ground corncob media with a little bit of Dillon liquid brass polish
added in my tumbler. The corncob is a bit more aggressive than the ground walnut
hulls. The walnut will provide a higher polish, but will take a good bit
longer to do so. The corncob doesn't provide a super high polish, but does
a nice job of getting my brass/ other random parts really clean in a reasonable
amount of time.
I would not recommended Brasso or any other polishing compound that contains ammonia
as an ingredient (read the labels carefully), it attacks the zinc in the
brass and will make brass brittle. Bad news for cartridge cases as well as critical
airplane components. There is no harm in adding a bit of red jeweler's
rouge to the media for a higher polish if desired.
For more info on the Dillon polish (and vibratory tumblers, media, etc), visit www.dillonprecision.com Tumblers and media are also available from www.midwayusa.com I'm not endorsing either company but I have dealt with both extensively and have always had positive experiences with them.

Thank you Billy for your comments/suggestions. I let my vibrating tumber ru
n for the morning hours today and my rifle brass is cleaning up nicely but
the turnbuckle barrells are only slightly changed. I will look into the cor
ncob media.
Thanks again
Craig

You are right in that this group is one of the most considerate and fun bunch to
associate with.
I make no bones about the fact my planned mods are UNPROVEN and are, at best, a
modification to fit my fat and overly large hiney.
I have made some educated guesses about stuff, backed by formulas and info i have
found in EAA books about aircraft design, so I (read that Me, myself and only
myself) am comfortable with the strength and design changes I am making to
the plane.
I agree with Dick on this: IF it flys better, then I can say they were "Improvements".
If not, then I hope they are not "degradations" and can still be flown
at least as well as the original Piet.
So, I appreciate this group more than ever, as I trudge the road of happy building.
Mark

With the weight and balance issues involved I think
I'd be more worried about all that rapidly spining
metal in the three stage blower being in such close
proximity to the family jewels! :-)
Of course folks might wonder what the silly grin
was all about.
