My instructor uses this software on his ipad and sends me an email when he gets
home with the day's tracks. Really cool to see what you actually did.

I'd keep the turnbuckles away from CLR. It is basically (no pun intended) an acid,
and not recommended for use on metals, other than stainless steel. If one
was to dip the turnbuckle barrels in CLR, the acid would get into the internal
threads, and etch away at the metal. That is not a good thing.

These are usually shown being so effective that you need only dip the tarnished
part in the cleaner and remove it...presto, clean. I believe one such item
is called CLR.

Here's my capstrip soaking method. My dad's a plumber so I stole an 18"
length of pvc pipe out of his truck, heated the end up with a torch and
then clamped it in the vice, sealing the one end. Fill with boiling
water and wait for 10 min, empty and refill since it's a small amount of
water and cools quickly. did that about 3 times, stick it into the jig
and tada!! I built my first rib for the center section. Tweaking it this
morning getting it to perfectly match the wing rib that it will be

One thought about making your training efficient. Use Microsoft Flightsim to practice
what you are going to go do and to review what ;you just did. Not loggable
but very affordable. Even reccomended by Ron Machado.

I received this email from Mike Weeden of the Brodhead EAA. MH from Kentucky has
been a mainstay at the Brodhead Piet flyin for years.
Skip
MH Proffitt is suffering from pancreatic cancer that has eluded surgery and treatment
and has matasticized. They decided to do hospice at home. I spoke with
Delores this evening to see if I could visit but he has deteriorated past where
he can take visitors. Family is staying close.
She has not made it to Brodhead the last couple years but understands how important
the fly-in is to MH each year. He loves hearing from callers and if you
get a chance to call or email I'm sure they will appreciate it. She said Doc
Mosher called and left a message and I reminded her that Doc has been the main
fly-in organizer recent years. I have an email for MH: idrp40 (at sign) earthlink.net
. If you call, you may have to leave a message but be sure to identify
yourself so he knows who's thinking of him (270) 563-4029.
If you know how to contact anyone else that may be interested in MH's condition,
please do so as the letter he wrote for publication may come out too late.
Mike

I used it in Iraq when teaching ground school to demostrate some principles.
Find out from your flight instructor what he has planned for your next several
flights, What he expects of you and how you can prepare. I would let him know
what you are doing. You may have to show him the program. It will not get you
ready to drive a taildragger on the ground, But you will understand the principles
of turns around a point. Flying the traffic pattern and so on.
My FSX has a flight school taught by Ron Machado, You should be able to follow
along with him and your instructor.
You can also take a virtual look at the airports you are going to fly to and the
terrain you will fly through. In other words you can rehearse your crosscountry
flights, including looking for emergiency landing spots on the way.

I am interested in what brand ELTs people are using. I would prefer to use the
SPOT GPS following system, But if I travel more than 50 miles from my home airport
I am required to have an ELT. Cheap is good. I am using one in my Vtail
that meets the regs, is only 121.5 freq and uses D coppertop batteries. (don't
underestimate the cost of "custom" batteries on an ELT.)
I am also on the edge of the San Antonio International Airport class C airspace
and may want to be able to fly closer to town. So a transponder may be required.
Same question: what is an affordable soulution to getting a transponder for
use in a Piet? Besides, in some busy airspace it is a smart option.

Steve,
I have an Ameri-King AK-450 ELT in my Pietenpol. Nice thing about this ELT
is it uses regular Duracell "D" cell batteries, rather than a special high
dollar battery.
Of course, if we're mandated to go to 406 MHz ELTs, it becomes an expensive
and fairly unattractive paperweight

So, Dick's work is conservative. He installed a Rotec radial on his beautiful
"woody Piet", but Rotec lists the dry weight at about 224 lbs. and if the Ford
engine weighs 244, he really didn't affect the W&B very much.
The Rotec is rated at about 110 HP at 2400 propeller RPM, so that's roughly more
than twice the power of the Ford inline four. Better climb.
I don't know if Mr. Pietenpol ever flew a version of his Air Camper with a radial.
Does anyone know?

The ELT on Scout is installed on a scrap piece of aluminum sheet that is mounted
between the lower longerons in the space behind the pilot's seat. Roughly
the same space as the walking beam for the elevators. That sheet serves as the
ground plane for the ELT whip antenna as well as the VHF COMM bent whip for
the handheld. Corky originally installed the ELT on the floorboard up between
the passenger's rudder pedals, but it got dislodged in the nose-over and rather
than put it back up there, I followed recommendations in Uncle Tony Bingelis'
books (and elsewhere) and tried to locate it in the tailcone area where it
would better survive a crash. [Gulp... did I just use that word?]
My ELT is the old useless 121.5Mhz style that gets me a sign-off at inspection
time but may not do much else in a real crash. I'm not so sure I want to be located
if I'm ever in a real crash though, since I may find myself in a race with
Dr. Alzheimer one day and I don't want him or the family to find me.
(Wait. What day is today?)
