I'll second the notion that the "improved" gear is lighter, have read that in old
newsletters or somewhere, but I don't know for sure.
Which one is easier to build it really more of a matter of which medium you're
more comfortable with. The wood gear doesn't require any welding... I know the
plans do show the fuse fittings with a little weld on them, but 2RN was built
without welding them at all and they've had no problems because of it.
The wood gear does have some whacky angles and will require dimensioning lumber,
and possibly gluing up, a fair amount of shaping it, etc.
Although I'd be comfortable now welding up gear, I sure wasn't when I started down
this path which made the gear choice, not really a choice at all. Also, I
just like the look of the Jenny gear.

I admit: I've been very spoiled. I have been building my Piet in a large barn.
But, with the impending move to Beaumont, I am not finding houses to rent with
this same set up. In fact, I am very surprised to see so many houses there with
no garage, much less a barn!
So, I am wondering what you build in? I am assuming many have been built in a garage.
The local airport has T hangers and rents them for 295 per month. But,
I doubt that's gonna work into the budget. T
Rather spend that on plane parts!
Still hoping for a large workshop, but that might be 2 years down the road...

Subject: | Re: How many of you are building/have built in your 2 |
car garag
Lots of variables here and generally speaking, it just requires some thought...
Dad got his Hatz onto the gear and the wing panels made in a two car tandem garage,
with a little 10 x 10 workshop area in the basement...
Got a friend who's building his Hatz in his living room...
I rebuilt my fuselage in a two car tandem garage.
Not perfectly parallel, but to give an idea of what I mean by thought, or thinking
out of the box, at the Naval Academy I built my model airplanes on my bulletin
board, which we were required to have. And it was the only thing I had I
could stick pins in. It JUST met the requirements of what we were allowed to
have on it... A vertical "work bench" has the benefit of NEVER being over cluttered!
Of course there's the other tangent, all projects beget more projects. Consider
building a replica of Bernie's hangar and building your plane in that. It's
a pretty efficient little structure, easily studied at Oshkosh. Or more mundanely
building a shop where you find a suitable house and lot. Like renting it
takes money away from the project, but adds value to the property done correctly,
hopefully enough to recoup materials at least. These days this isn't a
given for sure.
My entire hangar project (40 x 72) is being built from reclaimed materials given
to me for the asking. The poles from the local electric company for free.
The trusses and tin from someone who was otherwise going to have to pay someone
to remove a chicken house from his property.
Could make a shop structure "knock a part" and take it with you in a couple years.
I'm not sure how far along you are in your project, but LOTS can be done in very
small spaces.
Perhaps you could split a hangar with another builder or two who's in the same
situation, contact local EAA chapter perhaps. Have the added benefit of tool
sharing (which can be good, or bad...).

Mark,
Just a thought. Put an ad in the Beaumont Craigslist that you are looking for garage/workshop/warehouse
space to rent. You might be surprised at what pops up.

Subject: | A very Generous Pietenpoller |
Some of you on the list might remember Brian Kenney from Broadhead several years
ago. Brian built C-FAUK and has been flying her for 26 years.
This morning at our annual fly-in breakfast I was chatting with Brian and hinting
around that a ride in his Piet would be great motivation for me and the continuation
of my build.
Brian's trust and generosity were both evident when he simply suggested I climb
in to his beautiful machine and take it around the pea-patch solo. I provide
tailwheel training on Cubs and Champs and have owned a Stinson for several years
but the exhilaration and visceral experience of taxiing out in an open cockpit
machine and seeing the big motorcycle wheels roll over the grass was incredible.
The little 65 horsepower Continental was ample power to get the tail
up quick on take off and establish a healthy climb. I did some gentle and medium
turns on the downwind and found the plane delightfully balanced and rudder
friendly. Seeing the fields below me framed in wing struts, drag cables and
wooden landing gear was very inspiring. There was a quartering crosswind blowing
from the left but a little crab and 70 mph felt good and the landing was quite
tame and comfortable.
I taxied back to the flight line and shut down with a feeling of elation and an
amazing realization that the plane I am building is exactly the kind of plane
I want to fly. I'm very stoked to finish my build and now have a true understanding
of what awaits me and the end of the construction journey. Brian is representative
of the generosity and engagement of this great group. When I hopped
(okay wriggled) out of the airplane with this stupid grin I couldn't wipe
off my face I immediately exclaimed to Brian that his airplane was an absolute
blast to fly. He smiled and told me that if more pilots tried flying a Piet
there would be plenty more examples of the airplane dotting the sky.
I'm sure every Piet builder can relay a story of the "aha" moment when they realized
why they are working through the multitude of little projects that accumulate
into the final completion of a Pietenpol. Being able to visualize the reward
at the end of the build is an incredible motivator. I can say that today
was my "aha" day. I now know why the fliers on this list keep on flying their
Peitenpols and can say I'm grateful for their continued feedback.

Just thought I would throw my name in, although East Texas is sorta the stepchild
and that's okay with us. You'll find me building at 3F9 about midway between
Dallas and Shreveport. I'll mention that Mark McKeller up near Mt. Pleasant
is now resuming his build. He sold me the Corvair I now have on my Piet, so
he will be starting fresh on another one. There may be a few of us ready to
wing our way to Brodhead in 2014... just hopin'. So Mark, welcome to the great
stare of Texas... fast becoming a major Piet sanctuary.

Mark, I started out in a "basement" room about 16 X 16. When I outgrew that
I moved the automobile out into the driveway and brought the project into
our 20 X 20 2-car garage. When checking for squareness of the wing center
section I moved the car into the street and used the garage and part of the
driveway to temporarily put the 3 wing sections together. When I get ready
to completely assemble the uncovered airplane to make sure it all goes
together properly I'll have to wait for a few days of good weather and use
the driveway to assemble everything. I even heard of one builder building a
Piet in a 1-car garage. Don't believe I would want to do that. C

Built mine in a 2-car, in which my wife's car inhabited its 1/2 during the
week days. First homebuilt I recall seeing was when I was 16...a Dyke Delta
being built in 1-car garage! Then, there was a guy in Australia building a
601 in a cargo container!
Moving's a lot of work, but it can be fun when it's for the right
reason....hope all works out well for you...

I restored an L-2 in one bay of a two-car garage. Wings make a great
conversation piece in a little-used formal dining room.

Hi Mark,
I am buildi ng in a two car garage and most of the time its plenty of room. Right
now I am working on wings and it is getting a little on the crowded side now.
Cheers,

Thanks! We are really looking forward to being Texans.
I am sure this is going to put me several months behind in finishing the build,
but well worth it. I hope to make that trip to Brodhead one day with my piet!
Hope to met up with y'all when we settle in.

Subject: | Re: How many of you are building/have built in your 2 |

Although I have a dedicated two car garage workshop
it is not clear space. I have an ancient 72 drawer
library file cabinet which is topped with a left handed
cabinetry workbench on one side, radial arm saw 8' bench,
band saw, shop vac system in the middle, 14' x 4' low
building bench on other side. That's just the basics so
I was able to build tail, ribs, fuselage sides and some other
stuff inside. As soon as the fuse bits became a real
box there was no room to maneuver so the main build
area is out in the backyard under a homemade 12X22'
canopy. Now that I'm getting close to actually building
the wing panels there's going to be some creative
fuselage moving soon.
So all is not lost because there's no garage. A little
creative will and maybe a little"I don't care what the
neighbours think." mind bending can go a long way.
If you do decide to make a canopy use silver tarps.
They'll last a lot longer. The canopy pics show the
evolution from the first simple cover to the final,
tall, snow resistant one tall enough to clear the
center section and rudder.
I bought the fittings from a Harbour Frieght Canadian
equivalent. They fit 1" emt tubing.
The neighbours love having this old eccentric dude
workin' away on an old timey airplane. I don't know
how they'll cope when it's gone. Poor things!

It seemed like such a silly question to ask, but seriously, I have been spoiled
by all the room in my barn. So, I'm trying to imagine what I am going to do to
adjust. Finding another place like I have now is not gonna be easy.
As always, this group is a true blessing of help!
