How timely Oscar. This past weekend I flew in to Lubitz field near Toronto Ontario. Ed Lubitz retired as a pilot from my airline in 1999. He is an aerospace engineer and designed a PSRU and other modifications for a Ford Escorte engine that he flies behind in his Pietenpol. I was fascinated by the simplicity of his design and how nicely it cowls (similar in weight to the Model A so it can be kept pretty close to the firewall). I wouldn't mind submitting an article about his design and whereabouts. He's a great guy and good friend to aviation and the home builder. Scott Knowlton Burlington, Ontario Sent from my iPhone On 2013-07-14, at 11:41 PM, "taildrags" <taildrags@hotmail.com> wrote: > > Hello, low 'n' slow fliers; > > Pat Panzera, editor of Contact! magazine, is considering an all-Piet issue of the magazine if we can assemble enough articles to fill an issue. I'm sure we can. Contact! is somewhat engine-oriented and 100% technical content, and my thought is that the Air Camper has been powered by so many different engines that it shouldn't be any problem at all getting some articles together for the magazine. I think the most exciting new Air Camper just about to hatch is Chris Rusch's Mitsubishi-powered airplane, and I'd like to feature that one in the magazine but there are numerous other innovative ones out there. Of course Dick Navratil's Rotec radial powered airplane is unique and would have plenty of technical details of interest in how he adapted the engine to the airframe. There are some recently-completed and completely authentic Ford-powered Piets that would be of interest to others as far as the details of the conversion and build nowadays vs. what the original Pietenpol c! > onversion drawings suggested. We might even go back to some of the other one-off Piets such as the Ford Fiesta powered one that appeared back in the November 1980 issue of Sport Aviation. Which, by the way, does anybody have any information on? Is it still around? > > Put on your thinking caps and email me off-line if you think you can put together a technical article related to Piets (and in particular, powerplants for them). The design will be 85 years old in 2014, so maybe we can get the issue together to celebrate that milestone early next year. > > -------- > Oscar Zuniga > Medford, OR > Air Camper NX41CC "Scout" > A75 power > > > > > Read this topic online here: > > http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=404691#404691 > > > > > > > > > >

Gary, thanks a bunch for your offer of the A-frame. I think I'll take you up on that. Now I need to find a way to help someone else as generously as you have helped me and many others !!! I plan to be at Brodhead in a couple of weeks, so will at least re-imburse you for the shipping cost. My address is: 3407 Woodland Place Columbus, IN 47203 Larry ----- Original Message ----- From: Gary Boothe To: pietenpol-list@matronics.com Sent: Sunday, July 14, 2013 10:58 AM Subject: RE: Pietenpol-List: New Spar In Place Ha! The Quest for the Perfect Tailwheel! You may as well ask what's better? Republican or Democrat? Catholic or Protestant? Cake or pie? It's Bernouli's Principle of Tailwheels: "The number of opinions you get varies directly with the number of people you talk to." I would let Kevin chime in for himself, but he replaced his A-frame with a spring after about 25 hrs. Looking thru www.Westcoastpiet.com, you will also see a wide variation. In my case, part of the problem is how I designed my whole rudder pedal set up and linkage to the rudder and tailwheel. Moving the tailwheel back will allow me to connect to the rudder with a rudder horn, eliminating one problem. My only concern is the added stress to the rudder hinges. Obviously, careful thought needs to go into attaching the springs without adding too much weight. I'm very sorry to hear of your misfortune, Larry, and hope the repair goes smoothly. My A-frame is certainly NOT for sale, but, if you send me a shipping address, you find it on your doorstep one day soon! Gary Boothe NX308MB From: owner-pietenpol-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-pietenpol-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Jack Phillips Sent: Sunday, July 14, 2013 7:23 AM To: pietenpol-list@matronics.com Subject: RE: Pietenpol-List: New Spar In Place Larry, I agree with you. I had a "Bonafide" tailwheel on a leaf spring. When I had my forced landing which culminated in a broken axle and groundloop, the tailwheel acted as a 14" lever and cracked my lower right longeron. I went to the A-Frame design after that. I first made it to the Pietenpol plans for the tailskid and just added the mount for a tailwheel. I found that the A-Frame with no reinforcing was too flexible and the tailwheel could twist the frame, rather than turn the airplane. I modified it by going to thicker walled tubing and adding a cross piece between the two arms, and it has been fine for the last 8 years. I was thinking of doing just the opposite. Last Thursday, I managed to do a groundloop while doing a high speed taxi on a hard surface taxiway. My "bonafide tailwheel," turned out to be a 14 inch lever that broke the tailpost when it went off the taxiway. My first thought was to replace it with an A-frame, then I saw your posting???? Other thoughts on my groundloop: 1. The rudder is less effective than I would have thought at low speeds. 2. A Pietenpol really likes grass. Do you want to sell your A-frame? Today, generous locals brought me a used Scott, full-swivel tailwheel and a brand new set of springs! Gary Boothe NX308MB

Hey all, I MIGHT have a little jam that I'd need help with. As some of you know, we're hosting a 10-year-old Ukranian orphan for the summer. He'll be driving up with Marci to meet me, and hopefully enjoying the event. He's an awesome kid and the experience has been great for us all. Problem is, he has to be on a plane at Columbus on Monday and I need/want to be there to see him off, as he's really bonded with me. IF the WX turns iffy and it looks like I might be delayed getting home, I thought of locating a hanger space where I could park RE-PIET while I drive down with Marci to see him off, and come back and get the plane in a week or three. Anybody have contacts at Brodhead whom I could speak with? Or any ideas?? Douwe

Thanks. We've moved the Pacer to a friend's hangar for the next few months to provide more workspace for the Pietenpol project. I'm liking not banging my head into the Pacer's wing every third trip around the Piet. Nice booth Ken, I did something similar for my Taylorcraft inside my hangar. I built 8x8 panels and then stretched plastic over each panel then screwed them together. After it was built I put down several paint tarps on the floor. It worked out pretty good. Several guys on the airport have used it since, now it is disassemble and stored until I need it for the Piet. Stewart system primer. For color coats, we're going to experiment with Benjamin Moore Aura Latex sprayed on. If that doesn't work out satisfactorily, we'll shift back to the Stewart topcoat system. I've made a bunch of test panels (actually I just re-covered a bunch of old chair seats using ceconite) to test the paint process before having to commit. Just about what I did, used the "Bell method" one cross coat of latex primer and two cross coats of latex satin finish coat (Sherwin Williams Superpaint mixed with the Flowtrol). I brushed the fuselage then sprayed the wings and tail. Went on fine using both methods. And that is a great idea test covering and painting an old lawn chair frame, I think I will do that and use it in my hanger, will be a great conversation piece. rick On Mon, Jul 15, 2013 at 9:26 AM, Ken Bickers <bickers.ken@gmail.com> wrote: > Stewart system primer. Scott; thanks a million! I'll post this reply to the list and not just to you individually since the same general comment will apply no matter what the technical topic: by all means, assemble any information you can get on the Lubitz Escort conversion! Write the piece, get photos, do the interview... and send it along! No matter whether the "special" Piet issue becomes reality or not, this type of story is always of interest, and it sparks creative thinking. Run with it! I'm also thinking that Greg Bacon/John Dilatush's "Mountain Piet" would be a prime candidate for write-up as well. I have no connection to this company, except as a customer. It cost me about $180 for a fairly large model (24 in wing). I just picked a picture of a plane I liked off the internet and sent the pictures. Jack; I think there is plenty of technical content to put together an article devoted to small Continental engines and how to get the most from them. I love these engines and would love to see a story on building and modding them. With airplanes like Jon Sharp's "Nemesis" and Hoot Gibson's Cassutt, there is evidence that these engines can be encouraged to put out a lot more than their rated power with some judicious modification. Add things like the P-Mag and there is plenty to explore. -------- Oscar Zuniga Medford, OR Air Camper NX41CC "Scout" A75 power Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=404740#404740

I missed the call out on the plans for the 1/8 plywood piece that reinforces the hinges. Instead, I used 1/16th. On the h.s. do think I would be OK gluing another 1/16 doubler there? -------- Joe Pringle Atlanta, GA Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=404746#404746

Mine doesn't have any at all... so ya, it'll be fine just gluing in another layer. I'm gonna retrofit metal plates like the Std. Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=404747#404747

UNCLASSIFIED Thanks, guys, you jinxed me. Tonight, I saw a small solidified drip of epoxy on a floorboard. Easy, I grabbed a razor and determined to trim it off. About the time I thought, "I should really slow down and do this right." The blade cut through the epoxy and jabbed into the fleshy part of my palm, next to my thumb. At least the blood somewhat matched the dark stain I had used. Then again, most of my successful projects have been baptized with a blood sacrifice. Maybe this will get my projects back on track. So maybe you are forgiven. Blue Skies, Steve D. UNCLASSIFIED

Few are the trails leading to completed projects which are not crusted with dried blood, damp with tears, and salty from sweat. Rather than being jinxed, you're experiencing one of the things that makes a successful project an even more valuable and memorable accomplishment. No pain, no gain. Put a butterfly bandage on the cut, be glad that it was a clean slice from a razor blade, and be careful next time. You know there will be a next time... there would be no market for Band-Aids or first aid kits if there weren't "next times" ;o) -------- Oscar Zuniga Medford, OR Air Camper NX41CC "Scout" A75 power Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=404749#404749

Paul; thanks for the comment. Of course William and "Wese" are invaluable resources when it comes to the Corvair conversion, and I am in touch with both of them as the need arises. William and Grace are planning to publish a Piet-specific manual with tips, tricks, and other valuable information. They love the Piet as much as we do. That said, I'll also mention that the focus of the Contact! articles will be on as broad a range of applications as I can round up for the issue, and I'm going to try to have the magazine compliment William & Grace's publication, not duplicate it. We will absolutely, positively include a current example of a Corvair Air Camper, and may contrast it with Mr. Pietenpol's early Corvair conversions using the top shroud blower and mostly stock internal components. There is an excellent selection of current PietVairs... as well as others in the offing (Kevin Purtee's reincarnated "Fat Bottomed Girl" being one example). It is good that there are so many targets of opportunity. -------- Oscar Zuniga Medford, OR Air Camper NX41CC "Scout" A75 power Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=404750#404750
