Way late into this discussion.
Think about using aluminium but painting it to look like wood.
A buddy building a Spencer AirCar (Huge amphibian) has developed the ability to
modify a paint job so that it looks like wood. you can't tell where the real
wood and the plastic or aluminium start.

Alright we will hold you to that. And if you do not have your seaplane
rating yet you can drop by Dave Browns seaplane base next year (just down
the road from Sun-n-Fun) and pick that up. I did that back in the 70s, it
was the most fun I ever had in an any airplane.

The technique is referred to as "faux wood finishing" and has been around a LONG
time. VERY common in the colonial days to paint nasty ordinary common hard
woods like cherry and walnut, to look like mahogany. Seriously, they'd paint
it brown and fake the entire job!
Point being, it really can be convincing, it's well documented and there's quite
a number of tools out there that can help. Just start researching faux wood
finishing techniques.

Was on short call that whole time, but no trips assigned... several days back to
back, would rather have been in AMS!
It's all covered now, but will try to put together a pic in the next day or two
as I retrofit the hinges on 2RN.
When you coming to OSH again? Should have the motorhome there by Fri night (26th),
a classic wood boat show on Sat in Neenah, then ferrying it down to OSH on
Sun to avail for the week (a 30' '64 CC Conny) if I can find a slip or dock
space.
Wood boat, wood plane, guess I need a Morgan now!

Very nice Ken. I am almost exactly at the same point. I spent today taking everything
off the fuselage, firewall forward, getting ready to cover the fuselage.
I have a friend that just built a large spray booth to paint his Cherokee.
The plastic he used was heavy gauge construction polypropylene. It now sits
in my T hangar ready to be attached to a frame. Hopefully I will get it set up
before Brodhead.

my buddy had a Morgan in Park Hills, Mo. Steel chassis, wood frame and sheet
metal over it. Kingpin front suspension. It would go about 11 miles until it
started to overheat. We used to take it to a restaurant in Bismarck, Mo
about 10 miles away and get lunch and let it cool then drive it back to his
house. He was too cheap to take it to a mechanic. He left it to his daughter
when he passed on. She may still have it or maybe she sold it.
