Never having been to the Brodhead gathering before I am getting excited just thinking
about it. My wife and I will be there for the brats and the companionship
of Pietenpeople. You are to be commended for starting and continuing the
      bratfest tradition.

We are wimping out and staying in a motel in Monroe but will be happy to add our
vehicle to the list for helping others get into town and such. We're still
a couple of years out from having our own Piet ready to fly in.

| Subject: | Matt's KLVK ATC Streaming... |

      Dear Listers,

A couple of weeks ago I found a web site on the Internet called LiveATC.net that
has the Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower communications on line for streaming
for a number of airports around the country. Lo 'n behold, they even have a
stream for my home base, the Livermore Airport. But, much to my dismay, the quality
of their KLVK feed was just plain awful. It was obvious the airband source
didn't have a decent antenna or perhaps even a good radio. I suppose that
given that their site is a consortium of local citizens providing the feeds,
the lack of quality goes with the territory.

But, I really liked the idea of being able to monitor the LVK ATC and also the
ability to bring up the archives and listen to my personal communications with
      the tower after a flight.

Since I had a computer at the hangar along with a pretty decent Internet connection
and, in the spirit of Experimental Homebuilding, I had an idea... I mounted
an air-band antenna on the top of the hangar and brought the RG-58 coax down
to near the computer and plugged it into my trusty Icom IC-A20 hand held.
I was AMAZED at the quality of signal I was getting. It was picking up guys in
airplanes 19 miles out like they were sitting next to my hangar! I set the
radio to high-speed scan between the Tower and Ground frequencies so with a single
feed I could get all communications.

So next, I made an audio connection from the handheld to the Line In input on the computer. Sure enough, now I was getting great sound from the hand held on the computer! I found some software from Australia called BroadWave from a company called NCH ( http://www.nch.com.au/streaming ). It lets you connect to the Line In port on the computer and then generate real time audio streams that can be served up via the Internet. And sure enough, it works great!

Next, I found some software from Germany called Loop Recorder ( http://looprecorder.de ) that let's you monitor an audio input on your computer and generate archive files. You can select an increment in which to rotate the files automatically, for example, every 30 minutes. I downloaded this software and installed it and sure enough, I was able to start archiving the ATC transmissions coming in, all the while streaming them live as well!

The last piece of the puzzle was to enable the Web and FTP servers on the Windows
7 system and come up with a front-end web page that would tie all of these
new resources together for easy access from the Internet. I'm happy to report,
the whole thing came together very nicely and even allows you stream directly
to your Android or iPhone as well as your desktop! Pretty darn cool!

And so, without further ado, here is my new web site for monitoring the ATC communications
      at KLVK:

              http://klvk.matronics.com/

Just to state the obvious, the stream is silent if there isn't any current ATC
or aircraft communications. During the day, you'll usually hear something within
five or ten minutes. Sometimes much quicker.

I contacted LiveATC.net and they were excited about adding my new stream to their web site as well. So, at some point soon, the LiveATC.net feed for Livermore Airport will be coming from my hangar! My site http://klvk.matronics.com will continue to be available as well.

      For entertainment purposes only!

      >
      >

7 system and come up with a front-end web page that would tie all of these
new resources together for easy access from the Internet. I'm happy to report,
the whole thing came together very nicely and even allows you stream directly
to your Android or iPhone as well as your desktop! Pretty darn cool!

five or ten minutes. Sometimes much quicker.

| Subject: | EAA 534 Piet question |

      Hi all,
We are helping one of our members finish up his Piet that he was planning on
using a model A engine in. The motor mount is assembled, but the engine is not
installed at this point. The question came up today about what it would take
to install a Corvair engine instead. It is one of the long fuselage designs.
Thanks in advance for your comments. John Weber

      Hello John

I would think you would do the same thing I did before I built the engine
mount for my long fuse corvair, do a weight and balance with everything
assembled (but an engine of course) and then back calculate where a 220
pound ready to fly corvair engine with oil and wood prop would need to be
to center your CG (I hung some weight from under where my fuel tank is to
account for fuel). Then build your corvair engine mount accordingly
(William Wynne has complete instructions for one in his conversion manual).

Also 90% of William's 601 firewall forward manual applies to Piets or any
      other aircraft with a corvair.

| Subject: | Corvair on a GN-1 |

I l haven't posted lately or followed what was going on but thought I would bring
the list up to date with some issues I have discovered with my GN-1.

I bought mine as a partially completed project with a corvair engine supposedly
rebuilt to WW specs. I won't go in to all that I had to do to the engine but
the short answer was totally rebuild it.

Last fall I ran the engine at a corvair college and then began to concentrate on
the airframe. My fuselage was built but not covered. I hung the engine on
the airframe and began to work on weight and balance.

It is amazing how the subtle changes in geometry that Grega made add up. Putting
the heavier corvair engine on the GN-1 which was a re-designed Piet for an
A-65 makes it extremely nose heavy. The bolt on cub gear is also well behind
the leading edge (9") which I think would make for some potential nose overs on
taxing. I hung the engine on in flight attitude and the tail was definitely
negative. The GN-1 wing is fixed and does not move back and forth like the Piet.
My motor mount that came with the project had the engine well out in front,
probably 8 to 10" ahead of the firewall. Weight and balance looked horrible.
I rebuilt the motor mount which moved the engine back to minimum clearance
from the fire wall which puts more weight on the tail when in 3 point attitude
on the ground. I then redesigned the vertical cabane attachments so the wing
would rotate like a piet. I then moved the wing back 4" to make the weight
and balance work while in the air.

I spent a lot of time reading through William Wynne's weight and balance articles
that appeared in the Brodhead news letter. I recommend anyone building a Piet
of GN-1 do this as there is some excellent information there. And if you
are building a GN-1 with a corvair do some serious W&B calcs early on. It may
save you a lot of work.

All this added probably 6 months to my build time. These are the things you don't
think about when you buy someone else's project and don't have the benefit
of what was in their head while constructing. in my case what was in the heads
of at least 3 previous builders. My airplane will no longer be a GN-1 nor
will it be a true Piet. I think I will dub it an Adirondack Aircamper in honor
of its last home before it flies.

      1) Model-B Zenith (Type 3), 2) not sure what you're asking (inlet) and 3) no, it
      doesn't have an accelerator pump.

Think I may have a solution though. Thanks for responding.

      John,

William Wynne makes motor mounts for the Piet. They are quite nice with powder
coat finish and quite light. If you contact him @ Flycorvair.com he will no
doubt tell you exactly what information he needs. BTW my engine weighs closer
to 245# with mostly stock parts and a 5th main bearing. I think the model you
describe would be an excellent candidate for a corvair. Also get some back
issues of the Brodhead news letter and find William Wynne's articles about Weight
      and balance.

| Subject: | Landing gear springs |

Hello. I am looking for an opinion regarding the use of the 06-13200 coil spring
on the Pietenpol gear. I have a scratch built tail dragger, single seat, 430
lbs empty, 650 max. Are these springs overkill for this aircraft weight.?
If so can someone recommend a lighter spring.
      Thanks
