Hi - Here are a few photos of progress on the rebuild. Also one of me & Shelley
in front of Gary's airplane from June. Thanks to Gary for letting me fly it.
We attended the West Coast Piet gathering & had a great time.
A couple of things not apparent from the photos: the engine ran at Corvair College
24 last November, the fuel tank is done, and I bought a beautifully crafted
engine mount from William Wynne which is sitting in the garage ready for installation.
Today is the one year anniversary of the accident. We're blessed beyond belief.
My personal recovery has been nothing short of miraculous. The support from
this group has been extraordinary. Many of you have been extremely generous
and helpful and we appreciate it.
Shelley's mentioned we won't make Brodhead this year due to work commitments.
We tried, I promise. We'll do our best next year. In the meantime, know that
we're with you in spirit and give each other hugs for us.
Thank you for your love and friendship.

Kevin,
It's great to see how far along both you and the Piet have progressed. I
hope to see you at Brodhead next year or perhaps in San Marcos for the CC.

I'm trying to get ahold of that guy Snowden, and as soon as I do, he's going to

I already paid for it back on April 15, so might as well take advantage as a

Well, moving into the final phase of organizing, packing, unpacking,
repacking, weeding out to get the perfect travelling load for the Brodhead
flight.
WX is looking like it'll cooperate for a early Wed departure.
Leaving the northern KY area to Glenndale IN to fuel and stretch. Avoiding
Chicago airspace, I'm onto to Poplar Grove IF the winds are kind (which it
doesn't appear they will be), so extra fuel stop at Lowell airport in
Illinois (wonderful old couple run it, said I could buy fuel if they weren't
at doctors visits, gotta see this place!) then on to the holy grail,
BRODHEAD!!
Officially I'm using antique Texaco roadmaps and following railways.
Unofficially, I'm using my GPS backed up by charts cut up on a kneeboard
upon which I can mark my location from the gps every ten miles in case the
gps pukes out, I"ll kinda know where I am.
Trying to stay true to the Pietenpol spirit, so I'm packing a couple peanut
butter and jelly sandwiches, a candy bar and a soda; an old army rucksack
with some clothes, my sleeping bag and a pillow plus tie downs, a quart of
oil, tools, cockpit covers etc.
Got 22 gallons squeezed into the tank (pardon the gas smelling cockpit
cushions.), checked the clincher tires (gotta have 55-60 psi on those bad
boys), did my annual condition inspection and the only squawk was a couple
of loose prop bolts. Check those four times a year folks, especially a new
prop like mine; they like to change shape with the weather, and squish
down.
Gonna take lots of pics and maybe write a story for the newsletter. It's
about 330 nm each way, so lots of people are flying MUCH farther, but it
still seems like a big adventure to me, and the fulfillment of ten years of
being at Brodhead saying "this'll be the last year I DRIVE up!!!"
Please pray for my safety, and for that of everyone else coming up. Hope to
see you all there!!!
Douwe

Douwe,
I've stopped in Lowell a couple of times. Once while buying gas there I saw they
had some homemade jelly for sale on the counter. I think it was a whopping
$0.75! Got a real kick out of the sign that asked folks to please return the
jar when finished. Enjoy these places while you can.

OK, so I need to replace one of the tires on Scout. I've been using 6.00x6 "Aero
Trainer" (formerly McCreary) 6-ply ribbed tires on my Cub style gear. Roughly
$70/tire. I've been looking at the "Aero Classic All-Weather" as offered
by Aircraft Spruce, same size and ply rating but they have a sort of cross-hatch
pattern on the edges that makes them look a little like Stearman/Kaydet style
tires from the side. They are twice the price... $140/tire. Anybody using
these tires?
And a more generic question, regarding tubes. Everything I've read says to replace
tubes when replacing tires. It is a bit of a pain to replace or repair a
tube when one needs patching, so I can understand the aggravation factor, but
does anyone know of any other reason why tubes can't or shouldn't be re-used?
