Jack,
I wouldn't suspect you would have any trouble with the bus. Last night we h
ad a bit of a T storm but not too much rain, and I'm not sure how local it
was either. The grounds at Brodhead should be beautifully green this year (
as opposed to the dry-stubble-for-grass we had last year). Right now the su
n is shining bright right into my eyes as I sit here in McDonald's. The wx
is shaping up to be glorious.

Douwe-How EXCITING this preparation must be for you! I'm thrilled you'll
be able to fire up Wednesday morning and start your journey. Add 30 minut
es at each fuel stop for onlookers and questions. (maybe more with your b
eautiful plane!)
Your catch of loose prop bolts on your condition inspection was just fantas
tic! That is a good reminder to all of us that we should check our prop
bolt torque more often than not, especially living in areas of the country
that experience wide variations in temperature and humidity.
That is really high PSI you're running on your clincher tires. I'd like t
o hear more about that at Brodhead. I'm running about 25psi on my motorcyc
le tires. Maybe there is something different about your setup/ clinchers.
Interesting!
You'll feel a great sense of satisfaction approaching Brodhead by air inste
ad of car for the very FIRST time ever after all of your years coming. On
e thing that might surprise you is that from certain angles, Brodhead airpo
rt is difficult to spot! Trust your Texaco map, gps, and gut and remember
that the airport will pretty much look like everything else!

Now I can pontificate on my dated research on tires.
Should you buy an expensive or cheap tire? What does an expensive tire do that
a cheap tire doesn't do? If you are comparing apples to apples (Same size and
ply) then your decision should be based on how you use your plane.
A Cessna 150, being used at a flight school, doing 100 touch and goes per week
can go with a good cheap tire like the aero trainer.
If you fly the Rolls Royce of the air (A Vtail Beechcraft Bonanza) and you only
use it to go on trips to the spa every other weekend (4 Takeoffs and landings
per month) then you should get a high quality (and cost) tire like a Flight Custom
III.
Basically what you get with an expensive tire is superior weather and age resistance.
They will last longer on a calendar dates with moderate or low use. An
Aerotrainer and a Flight Custom III will last about the same amount of landings
if they are used frequently. An Aero Trainer will not last near as long tied
down on the ramp in the weather as a Flight Custom III.
Key elements of tire life. Air pressure, exposure to chemicals, sun and weather
exposure. Keep them inflated to the right pressure, don't let them soak in gas
or other chemicals, and keep your plane in a hangar preferably that does not
flood. As the tire ages, the cheaper tire will start to harden and wear faster
than the more expensive tire.
Aviation retreads actually are a very good deal and have an excellent record. They
have a carcass that has been proven and are inspected before reuse. Dresser
tires sells them. I would not hesitate to buy a set.
On my Old Cessna 150 I went through two sets of Aerotrainers, lots of touch and
goes. On my Vtail I have a set of Flight Custom IIs that have been on for 8 years
and still have a lot of life in them.
Blue Skies,
Steve D.
Of course for Oscar it is really important to look good. Remember "It is not important
how you feel, it is how you look that is important."

Douwe,
Another great place to stop for gas besides Lowell (which is in Indiana
not Illinois) is Starke Co. Indiana (OXI). Starke Co. is about 38 miles
due east of Lowell and they have a very nice E/W grass strip. Starke Co
also has the cheapest gas around. Starke is a great facility, very
friendly people, just check out the comments on airnav.com.
I'm just NW of Starke Co. at Porter Co. (VPZ). Thats where I have my
Piet. Since its not painted yet, Jim Haklin and I will be flying to
Brodhead in my Tripacer around 1:00 on Thursday. I had wanted to see
everyone at Dan's in Poplar Grove, but I'm sure you will all be on your
way by the time we get out.

Yep, going to miss Brodhead this year. Am packing myself for a short trip in the
camper to Hagarstown, IN for a fly-in and then on to the Dirksen farm for their
fly in. I'll be taking a few lessons this weekend at Red Stewart Field in
Waynesville and will be thinking about you guys and gals. Looks like a great
year to camp!
Have fun,
John

Oscar,
I have a theory regarding the tubes that I live by. When I replace a tire I also
replace the tube. Then I keep the old tube around so I have a spare one. This
is my insurance policy that I will never need it, cause as sure as I don't
replace it or don't keep the old one near by I will get a flat.
As far as the tires go, I think I would elect to install the other landing gear
and spoke wheels you showed us the other day :) It would look very cool with
them.

Gentlemen of Brodhead, do you have 100 LL to sell to us? I've only briefly followed
the chatter here but have not heard mention of fuel availability. We're with
Chapter 64 in Cahokia, IL. AKA Scrounge Dawg Aviation. Restoring a early '70's
Grega/Piet. It should be there by next year. (That's what we said in 2011)
So a couple of us are coming up in C-150's then on to the Mecca.
To fuel up there would save us a hop to KEFT.

All,
Like Jim, I'll be at home wishing I was with all of you who are convening
at Brodhead. Enjoy the brats, the friendship, endless lines from Waldo
Pepper, the sounds of motors in the morning, and the thrill of first time
arrivals.
Knowing that the next Brodhead is only a year away serves as powerful
motivation to double down on the remainder of my project.

Hi Dan - Here are the changes I've made/plan to make:
- Gypsy Moth/Gary/Douwe fuel tank for more fuel
- Back seat tilted 2 farther aft for comfort
- Turtle deck raised to match instrument cowling to improve shoulder belt geometry
- Front seat seat belt attach points per Mike Cuy
- Lower landing gear a couple of inches and move forward a few inches in accordance
with Mueller W&B articles handling was never bad but changes should make
it better. Dimensions not solidified
- Raise front seat bottom front edge for (slightly) improved comfort per Shelleys
request
- Clearance and reinforce front seat front panel, on the sides, for more foot room
and more durability when my foot hits the wood.

Axle, Could the seat adjustments be made with the cushons? IE have the back cushon
wedge shaped, thinner on top and thicker on bottom. And the front bottom cushon
wedged shaped with more cushon to to the front.
I will be doing cushions within 6 weeks.

Saturday is very busy with lots and lots going on. I'd say not a ton of folks
leave sat, in fact, many don't even like oshkosh, and most of the planes don't
fly up there (it's not a super friendly nordo event...).

Hi Steve - You'd think cushions would improve the situation. She's tried several
different iterations but it hasn't really made a difference. She can last
about 30 minutes in the front seat. I'm afraid the nature of the front seat is
such that she'll never be truly comfortable. Other people handle it ok.
I raised the front seat the 1/2" to humor her. It costs nothing.

Here's my final "aircamping" load.
It squirreled away pretty well. Build lots of cubbies, even if they're
small, they'll get log books and fuel testers out of the way.
The rucksack is seat-belted into the front seat. The tie-down bag is tied
to the front rudder pedals which are disconnected for this trip. Tools,
charts, oil, cleaning stuff and my jacket up front in the storage area ahead
of the passenger's panel. Lightweight but bulky items such as my sleeping
bag, pillows and cockpit covers go in the storage box I built behind the
cockpit. Roomy, but it's obviously only for light stuff.
FUN STUFF!!!
Except for a decent headwind all the way up (and back it looks like!!) WX
looks ok for an early departure. I'm praying for no fog this morning so I
can get out of here and beat some of the wind.

Back in 1999 I won a j3 cub in the us aerobatic foundation raffle. I started from
oshkosh with a gps and 2 or 3 wac charts. Ready to make a straight line in
the sky to south florida. When I turned on the gps at oshkosh it still thought
It was in florida. I ended up buying several sectionals and a few road maps.
Under 1000 ft 90 % of flight and diving down to read water towers to figure out
what town I was flying over. The most memorable flights of my life. Hope to
repeat it in a couple of years. Enjoy.

The engine mount face plate is vertical with four mounting points for bolts
to the engine mount points as per a C65 or similar engine. As I recall a
Ford would need two horizontal rails. Some modification may be necessary.
Nevertheless, I have a picture and can send it to you via email or I-Phone
message if it would be helpful.
