Corky; there are two different riblett ribs being built. The 612 and the
613.5. The one that Bill mentioned is the 612. The performance numbers look
very close to that particular pietenpol wing. I say "that particular",
because that wing used in comparison has vortex generators. Since the vg
performance improvements are pretty well documented, I still give an ever so
slight performance advantage to the riblett 612.
The riblett 613.5 is actually the rib that Mr Riblett recommended for the
piet. It is supposedly a higher lift design over the 612.
The 612 is taller than the piet rib and the 613.5 is taller than the 612.
Taller rib = taller spar= higher fuel capacity in center section tank and
higher safety margin when stretching wingspan. Both ribletts have same chord
and spar to spar distance as piet.
All three will provide loads of fun to fly under.

Thanks Paul, I appreciate the information. Since it took me eons to build
this Piet rib jig I don't really feel like going through that again with a
new airfoil.
Corky, starting new Piet after farm house-barn is completed in S Louisiana.

Well everyone, the dust (or mud) has settled and another Brodhead is behind
us.
It was a BIG one for me as it was the first time I got to fly up. After ten
years of tire-kicking and saying "this is the last time I DRIVE up", I can
tell you it was truly a highlight of my life.
As always I loved seeing familiar faces and many new ones and truly
appreciated the welcome and help offered and given. Had a great turnout
despite crummy flying weather, BUT when we could fly, it was absolutely
GLORIOUS!
After the nasty front came through on Friday, I took Marci up for an evening
flight and we both felt we were right out of the movie "Out of Africa". The
storm could be seen in the east, glowing pink.. Saw a herd of deer in a
cornfield and flew formation with some biplanes and lots of Piets. The most
memorable however, was turning around and seeing Andrew Kind in Alan
Rudolph's old Piet not more than forty feet next to me. He stayed there and
moved around me like a gnat while I tried not to move a muscle. Later it
turned out he was trying to get me in his GO-PRO camera, which he succeeded
in doing. Hope to share that one soon.
Gotta attend to business and decompress, then back to the hangar to clean
the bugs and grass off RE-PIET, figure out why the battery isn't holding a
charge and why the intercom puked out.
I want to write a little article about my flight up and back. In the old
newsletters, I used to occasionally come across an "Odyssey" type story and
found them very inspirational as I built and daydreamed about my turn.

Subject: | Ray's covering question |
No secret Ray,
Thanks for the kind words!
I wanted to replicate the old doped linen look which I find beautiful as the
light comes through it.
It sounds like the plane you are referring to is probably Dick's Rotec
powered Piet. Ours are a bit different from eachother.
I used ceconite and traditional dope. The dope was all clear however, which
I tinted using standard artist powdered pigments. I experimented on scrap
until found the right strength. Each sprayed coat added a tiny bit of color
until I had the right number of coats and the right tint. I did add UV
protector to the dope to help some.
The green is latex on the ceconite and auto enamel on the cowling and metal.
I figure my plane will always be hangared and will only see a few hours of
sunlight a year, so I won't worry about UV damage for a few decades.

Douwe,
It was fun flying with you, I posted a couple of the photos in another thread,
and will e-mail higher res versions to you. The strut mount for the camera
is subject to a little movement, so they aren't perfect, but still look pretty
neat. Even with the cold and wind it was a fun fly-in-

Aluminum, bought the expensive extruded ones but most agree the rolled ones
are fine.
