    Subject: 7075 alloy
    Something to look into, though it's probably a non-issue, it is interesting. Sitting around the fire with a new builder who is a machinist for the universities specializing in machining custom experiment machinery, he got to talking about aluminum alloy properties. He seemed to really "know his stuff". He commented that Japanese WWII wing spars were made using an alloy similar to 7075 and that it softened over the decades since the war. He said they always have to replace the spars for that reason. Someone commented that that 7075 was "holding his wings on" and it was decided that he had another forty years before he had to worry. Just passing along what I heard. You do the research. Douwe

    The wing spar of an aircraft is generally the heaviest single member of the structure. To substantially reduce the weight for this fighter, a newly developed aluminum alloy of exceptional strength was used. This was Super Ultra Duralumin, sometimes called Extra Super Duralumin (ESD). Pioneered and developed by Sumitomo Metals Company, this lightweight material was in itself a landmark development in Japanese aviation technology. The alloy was rich in zinc and chrome and was similar to to modern-day 7075 aluminum material. Compared to previously used alloys, ESD had a 30-40% greater tensile strength and 70-80% higher yield point. The correct designation is AA 7075 T6 DIN# 3.4365. The key to AA7075 T6 5.1-6.1% Zn 2.1-2.9% Mn 1.2-2.0% Cu 0.2% Ti &lt;0.5" others yield point 510-550N/mm2. (that's higher than most average quality steal with around 400N/mm2.)     Tom, I'm using 6061T6. It has a yield strength of at least 35,000 psi. With 3/4 in by 3/4 in stock and the 5/16 in bolt hole, you are left with 0.33 sq in holding your strut. Theoretically, that 0.33 sq in piece would fail under a load of approximately 11,500 lbs. Yes, 7075 is stronger but certainly not necessary. That's probably why Carlson sells the 6061T6 stock only.     I used 7075 because I happened to have a 3/4" square piece on hand. This is the size that fits the smaller struts that Carlson sells.- Also, I threa ded the other end for the adjustment fork, which is 1/2", threaded.     Bob; I have not heard of anyone doing that, nor do I know how the finish might turn out. About the only improvement I've seen to doing it the old way by dipping a brush into a can of varnish is a tip in the old BPA Newsletters. It showed a fellow with a pump-type oil can with a section of plastic tubing from the oil spout out to his paint brush, where it was secured such that as he pumped varnish from the can, it flowed onto the bristles of the brush to keep them wet. Still 100% hand work, but no dipping in the can. Tom has a Pietenpol in his garage. He's planning on using an 0-200. Tha t's the kind of thing that makes Pietenpols special. Tom could build anything he wanted and has flown just about every thing out there but his choice is a Pietenpol. Mike C.

I attended the forum, and photos of Malcolm's painted projects do not do his work justice. Using wet sanding , buffing and polishing techniques Malcolm creates a very, very nice finish on latex. Microsoft has a really awesome utility available for free that allows you to Right-Click on a picture in Explorer and automatically scale it down and resave it. This is a great utility - get it, use it! http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx Look for the link "Image Resizer" 3) !! This would seem to go without saying, but I'll say it anyway. Do not post anything that would be considered offensive by your grandmother. And you know what I'm saying; I don't want to see anything even questionable. !! 4) REMEMBER THIS: If you post a 1MB enclosure to a List with 1000 members subscribed, your 1MB enclosure must be resent 1000 times amounting to 1MB X 1000 = 1 Gigabyte of network traffic!! BE CAREFUL and BE COURTEOUS! Also see the section below on the Matronics Photo and File Share where you can have your files and photos posted on the Matronics web server for long time viewing and availability. ******************* *** Digest Mode *** ******************* Each day, starting at 12 midnight PST US, a new 'digest' will be started.
