John ,
Thanks for the kind words, and thanks for attending the forum. I was blown away
by the number of people and by all the really good questions. I had a blast.
I think latex can be a good alternative to traditional finishes, and it can give
you a better finish than most believe. I will get the updated presentation
(Powerpoint slides) posted on my web site in the next week or so. I just got back
yesterday and need to catch up on things first.
Thanks again
Malcolm

I'd like to thank Malcolm Morrison for presenting a great forum at EAA Airventure
on painting using latex paint. I attended the forum, and photos of Malcolm's
painted projects do not do his work justice. Using wet sanding , buffing and
polishing techniques Malcolm creates a very, very nice finish on latex. Thank
you Malcolm.

Here's what I would try. Wet sand what you have with 600 grit paper wrapped around
a sponge. You need to sand out and "orange peel" texture left from rolling.
Get a cheap Harbor Freight gravity fed HVLP spray gun. They are $15.99 on sale.
Thin your paint about 20% with wind shield washer fluid and spray 2 more coats,
letting each dry for a day. Sand in between coats lightly with 600 grit
wet. Stay away from the pinked tape and edges. Wet sand the final coat lightly
and carefully with 1000 grit, then 1200 grit, then 1500 grit. Use 3M polishing
compound with a buffer to bring out the shine. You can use the polishing compound
on a towel around the edges and pinked areas.
It sounds like a lot of work, but it really doesn't take that long and the results
are worth it (in my opinion)
Good luck and keep us posted on how you're doing
Malcolm

It might throw it out the tip, but it's not going to be a very servicable set up
in my experience (I've used them a fair amount). They're not much better than
a paint brush anyway.
It' specifically addressed as not suitable for airplane finish application in the
Poly Fiber manual.
I do know that turbine based HVLPs do the job well, that's how I finish kitchen
cabinets (I don't like lacquer). I spray unthinned spar varnish through them
all the time with great results. Gotta be super anal about cleaning them if
you're using two part varnishes. I don't know about cheaper Harbor Freight conversion
guns. I know they work well for thinner finishes, just haven't tried
them on thick stuft.

...yet, I, too, think of it as Dan Yocum's, possibly because he freely gave
control to me from the rear cockpit, offering me my first opportunity to
pilot a Piet, after not flying for nearly 30 years! Yep, that's Dan's
Piet...
