For the smooth custom fit that the ever popular Dan Helsper experiences every time he slips on his helmet, look no farther than Pops Leather. Have your head dimensions ready when you order - it truly is a custom made helmet, made specially for your noggin and at $45-50 it can't be beat: http://www.popsleather.com/new_catalog.php3?tp=56&cksess=0607-f2c11c7d5a2b620a2fdcca60ca13c53d-712286318

Thanks for the responses guys. I am the third person involved with this aircraft. The original owner knew the CG would be aft but the second owners who did the firewall forward didn't think it looked right and so they cut out the aluminum and did the cabanes vertical. She balances near the rear limit and has some generous aluminum fixed tabs on the elevator and flies nicely trimmed at 60mph but when I look back there is significant down elevator deflection. Since I switched from the metal prop to a nice cloudcars wooden prop it won't help the weight and balance any. So it sounds like all I might need to do is make some new angled struts. For the big holes in the aluminum I was thinking of sewing on some leather to fair in the struts and cover the ugly holes. Joe, You are thinking right. Leather patches can cover a host of sins! Be very wary of a rearward CG. I would suggest that you plan on doing your own W&B, during the time you are moving the wing. 1 or 2 inches may not be enough, and you may as well make it right, while you're at it. Personally, I think slanting the cabanes back give it a faster look...at least like 70 -75mph!! Just saw this on the Facebook page for the UK Pietenpol Club. The photo is from 1967, and depicts the Piet that was built with two A-65 engines, in a stacked configuration. Can't for the life of me figure out how that could have been an idea worth pursuing. Regardless, check out the cabane struts. Might be the first Piet ever built with the cabane struts tilted forwards. So I bought a couple AN867-3 and one finger strainer The brass finger strainer wont thread into the aluminum AN867-3 (by hand). Am I just not being rough enough with these two items ? >From the web site: Finger strainers are strainers for fuel tank outlets. Standard size features a brass fitting with 3/8" male pipe thread which fits AN867-3 welding flange, and 1/4" female pipe thread for valve or fuel line fitting. From: "bdewenter" <anonymouse@woh.rr.com>
Earlier this spring I was building my wing rib jig. I was using a brad nailer to secure the forming blocks to the jig base. About half way through the job the brad nailer stopped / jammed. It would kind of fire fire, but only a slight puff of air could be heard - no "THUMP" and no brad would come out. I had another brad nailer and switched to it. Just before the last block was secured, the second nailer had an identical failure. Is this a common problem from contamination in the air tank? Are these brad nailers serviceable? (One is a black and decker unit and the other is el 'cheapo from Lowes.) Where do you take them to get them repaired? What does one do to prevent another failure? -------- Bob 'Early Builder' Dewenter Dayton OH Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=406062#406062

Bob, Just a thought...are you putting a few drops of air-oil in the gun each time before you use it? A water/moisture separator between your air compressor and air hose is a good way to keep it from your tools. Usually due to a lack of oil. Lube it up real good and dry fire the heck out of it until everything is reseated. Might consider dismantling and look for galling between steel parts. If it's got galling, smooth parts out with a file and sandpaper. It can also be a problem with the trigger. Bostitch nailers are famous for an o-ring failing in there, but the symptoms are different. A moisture separator will only work until the air is heated up in the system, as they separate water particles, not "moisture" as they imply. Unless you're using a dessicant based dryer. However, the moisture in the air isn't the over riding problem, possibly a lack of oil. I had this failure just last week... I don't agree with the naming convention: Dans Piet (which was built by someone else) I'd Dan's because he flies it, shows it, and writes about it. We know it as his and very few of us know the builders, My Piet isn't mine anymore, it belongs to the delightfully droll Brad Williams. Now, if you want to start a Naming convention like they do with purebred cats or famous violins, we can set up a committee to think about the possible methods to appoint a group to study the methodology for assembling a panel to begin the selection process of naming a consultant to advise the Forum on possible candidates to examine the history and epistemology of a Board that, given a modicum of authority) could write the bylaws to oversee the Committee for Creating a Naming Standard. I will , by the end of Time, have several Piets built and flying. Proud to have them, like children, all named after me... but like our progeny, they will someday be married off to suitable suitors and have a life of their own. -------- NX29NX, C65, Hegy prop, Blue/Cream flying! Bob put a drop of oil in through the air hose fitting every time you use it. Also, put a water trap in the air line as close to your air tool as you can. Putting it next to the compressor will not get all the water out. I forgot about that! I did vastly improve my airspeed by making a new face card for the indicator, though... Hey, something looks fishy. That guy in the white T-shirt in front of Dan's Piet almost looks like he was photoshopped into the picture. BC Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=406101#406101
