Subject: | Re: planes the movie |
My eldest son out in Mojave, CA told me that the sound guys for the animated movie
"Planes" came out to the airport with all their recording gear and had a bunch
of the pilots there do things like: start engines, taxi, runup, take off,
fast and slow flyby's, etc. while they recorded everything. Matt's Lone EZ was
one of the planes that they recorded. He did not know if they went to a lot
of different places and recorded or if this was the only place.
I asked him if he would recognize the sound of his plane if it is in the movie.
He thought he would but... who knows. Anyway, just a little side benefit of
living that close to Hollywood I guess.

Just returned from seeing Planes in 3D with my 12 and 13 year old boys.
All of us really enjoyed it. Basically Cars but with planes. No problem, Cars is
a really great movie. The boys felt that they were just about equally good.
It is just about the best 3D effects I have ever seen.
I was surprised at the accuracy in many areas. The only Vtail was a French-Canadian
female twin. Not sure how I feel about that.
Most movie critic reviews pan the movie saying it is just a rehash and is predictable.
But they are not the audience it was aimed at. The kids throughout the
theater all clapped and cheered when the hero overcame obstacles.
I think it is a must see for Aviators. especially with their kids and grandkids.

Don't know about an Elsner. The thread had diverted into a discussion of
Elser, with airport identifier 4G4. It is located just south of
Youngstown, Ohio, near the PA border.

We used cheap Scotch Tape. Not the package tape, but the =BE=94 rolls
you use
in an office. Just put a short strip under the glue joints. Its thin
enough
to let it run up the side if needed. You might need to change every few
ribs, so I learned to fold over about 1/16=94 of the end of the strip so
you
would have a flap not stuck down to grab for quick removal. This way you
could change them all in about 3 minutes and keep on working.

I used sheets of Saran Wrap. I'd drape a sheet lie loosely atop the jig.
It would push in as the jig was loaded. If it tore, I'd drop in a small
piece of Saran over the tear or replace the whole sheet. Quick and easy.

Seriously? I've often thought that a Tailwind might be my second project. There
are a couple of nice looking examples around these parts that really get me
thinking about it once in a while.
Some that have heard me mention this have asked, "Have you ever tried to get in
one?" No, I have not... but that didn't stop me from building a Piet either.
Aside from the overall looks and performance, I guess I am under the impression
that Steve Wittman was a tall fellow and that I could fly whatever he flew...
not sure where I got that idea, because looking at photos of him with others,
like Pietenpol, it is pretty clear that he was not real tall. Oh well, maybe
I'll get to climb in one sometime.

Holy cow! Did you see the EMPTY weight of that Kinner powered Piet with the rounded
tail surfaces and J-3 wings? 1278 pounds!!! Add a pilot and fuel and it's
up around 1550 all-up weight! It's flying with 1.4G loading on the structure
in straight and level flight ;o) A steep turn from base to final and it's
at the 3.8G limit for normal category loading...

Clif: C-GHBD needs a centersection cutout or a flop. Plus maybe some cabane extensions.
