Subject: Pietenpol-List: Progress report
Well friends,
Here is a progress report that I hope is some inspiration for the rest of y
ou
builders. I just finished the brush coats of primer on one of my wings toda
y. I
still need to do the other wing half, which I hope to finish tomorrow. All
of
the rest of the airframe is finished through the brushed primer coats.
I plan on starting the final finish spray painting in the next week or so.

Has anyone had experience with Matco Tail Wheels ?
I'm thinking about either:
Tthe 6" solid rubber composite tail wheel $170 overall height is 9.71 inches &
weighs 4.75 pounds.
The 6" Pneumatic $199. Overall height is 9.71 inches. This assembly with pneumatic
tire, tube, and wheel weighs 4.75 pounds.
They are single arm as opposed to double arm which seems to be more durable and
stable. But technology has advanced a lot. My concern is that with a single
arm if will tend to lean to the side.

Subject: | A-65 tachometer cable |
Does any one have a good tach cable for the A-65, probably about 4' long? ACS seems
to have them, but it is hard to determine if they will fit the A-65.
Another question: the tach I have is non-recording but I have a Hobbs meter with
two leads ( it has only 14 hrs on it), can it be used without an electrical
system, no battery planned? Does the oil pressure sensor somehow send a micro
voltage? Maybe I should just get a recording tach! But I like the looks of the
old one!

Jim,
Please stop referring to the "Mystery line" on your plans. There is no mystery.
It's called a firewall.
I believe your plane has the "long" fuselage. The photo clips that you posted
are from the drawings for the "standard" fuselage (from the 1933 Improved Air
Camper plans). The basic dimensions for the long fuselage were provided on a supplementary
plan sheet, drawn up in the 1960's. However, there isn't a version
of the drawing in your photo that applies to the long fuselage, so it's VERY
likely that the builder of your plane just wrote in pencil, the dimensions that
applied to his (your) plane. The distance from the firewall to the wing leading
edge very well may be different from the number on your plans, as the
wing may have been shifted to get the CG to fall in the acceptable range.

TIP:
When searching the archives for previous posts, there are two methods. The first
is accessed through the Forum:
http://forums.matronics.com/search.php
The problem is that this method will only give results that were posted after the
Forum was up and running (2006).
Previous to the introduction of the Forums, the List operated using a different
format. Those messages are all stored in the old archive, which is also searchable,
and contains MANY more results than the Forum archive. Access the old
archive here:

Subject: | Aviation Maintenance Technician Handbook |
I recently discovered the book "Aviation Maintenance Technician Handbook - Airframe"
published by the FAA in 2012. I think it has some helpful information on
construction that might be of interest to new and tosome long time builders (me).
Also, the graphic are much better than what I have seen in other FAA publications.
Best of all you can download it for FREE off of their website.

Its been a few years, but I ordered my tach cable from ACS. I also
ordered the right angle drive to simplify installation. The right angle
drive enables you to use a clockwise or counter-clockwise tachometer. I
bought one with a built in recording hour meter. For oil pressure it
would probably be best to use a mechanical gauge, which involves running
a simple tube from the engine to the gauge. I used automotive oil
pressure and temp gauges and they don't use any electricity.

Thank you Bill C. for pointing out that the mystery line is the datum and i
f I can futher point out that my Uncle Tony suggests in his book series tha
t
it is so much less confusing to use the nose of the airplane as the datum--
-that way all of your moment arms are + positive numbers and there isn't
any confusion with negative distances from the datum as when you use the fi
rewall.
I used the nose of my airplane for the datum and doing the W&B as described
by Tony Bingelis was a very straightforward deal, even for a guy like me
who struggled with math. (well okay....at least how to correctly score a
bowling game)

Thank for pointing that out. I shoulda figured that out...duh!
Thanks to a tip from Zeke, I googled Michael Brusilow and stumbled upon the Matronics
Archives that has all his posts.
Been reading them for hours. Learned so much about my Piet.
Yes, it is the long fuse.
Yes, the wings were shifted back 3.5".
And the CG is 14.5 inches aft of the LE.
And now I know what those 4 holes in the front cockpit floorboard are for.
Color me a happy camper!

Oscar yes it was Malcolm Morrison, The only thing he did not cover much was
painting with a sponge roller.
With Valspar tractor paing you should never: paint in the sun, wind or on a
grassy or dirty surface. We painted my old Suburban on the grass in the
ditch beside my hangar, on a 104 degree day in a 10-15 mph breeze. It was
red, just not shiny. The paint has turned black somewhat and is peeling off
in some places. I sold that old truck to a coworker. He has put Big new
shiny rims with big tires, replaced the exhaust, rear axle, steering box,
power stearing system, radiator, had the AC worked over, replaced all
fluids and most seals, had the interior detailed, shocks all the way
around, and drives it today. He is a doctor and likes the rough appearance
and so won't paint it.
It will live forever.

Minor correction: the Quote button is on the top right of each post in
the thread, not the bottom. Additionally, it's the "Post Reply" button;
but I digress...
This is all well and good if one participates in the list via the
web-based forum, but some of us participate in the list solely via
email; it is an "Internet Email Group", after all.
That being the case, the email user replies to the particular list email
message they wish to comment on and (generally speaking) their email
client/web-based email system/smartphone/what have you includes the
content of the email they are replying to below their message. You may
ask/hope that listers snip that original message down to the content
pertinent to their reply, or that they include the "do not archive" tag
if their submission is not necessarily contributing content that needs
to go in to the list archive...but that's about all you can do. No point
in getting too worked up about it...save the energy for easier hobbies,
like cat-herding and W&B complication,

Mosher, who have raised that baby with loving care and kept it interesting and
timely. I look forward to every issue.
My favorite article in the latest issue is "A Brodhead Odyssey", Douwe Blumberg's
narrative about his and Marci's trip to Brodhead 2013. Since I will probably
not live to make that flight myself, I really enjoyed Douwe's story and the
encouraging things that he found at old-timey airports along the way. Great
reading.

PS, also in the current issue is the logo for the 2013 Brodhead event, which is
really nice. If anyone knows how I can get in touch with Pat Weeden to find
out more about the logo and possibly use the graphic for an art project that I
have in mind, I would appreciate it.

Bowling scoring as applied to airplanes: if you have a good landing you get two
additional tries :-)
