I'm heading down again this year to "help" (yikes). This is my 4th visit to CC
at Barnwell and will be my second as a graduate. Like others who have posted
above, I enjoy the camaraderie of fellow builders and I like helping out the
newcomers to College.. I also enjoy the folks at Barnwell who have been so nice
to me personalty, and to all of us as a group.

Since my brother and I have not had had much time together this year I'm bring
      him with me - (yikes x 2)

Anyone flying in needing a car look for me or P.F. Beck, Tim, Don at the registration
      desk to get the keys.

      Mario,

William Wynn has written much about cooling and cowling on his site flycorvair.net.
Even if you have a non corvair, it applies to all engines on planes like
      our Piets.

google cowling cooling site:flycorvair.net to get a listing of articles such as
      this one

      http://flycorvair.net/2013/05/30/cooling-with-j-3-style-cowls-pietenpols-cubs-biplanes-etc/

Also, If you can get Tony Bingelis articles from EAA website or his books, its
packed full of drawings and details about cowlings and cooling

48 spokes, 1 wheel and hub, 12 days, 20 attempts, 20 falures, 1 success at last.

      Backstory:
Picked up two pairs of 19" aluminum wheels from a cycle boneyard in Cincinnati
OH. One set went to Don Harper in Barnwell and in return he pressed bronze bearing
into my hubs. The spokes were in terrible shape so i decided to replace
them. Don did what smart people do - he cleaned his up and saved some money.

      Epilogue and lessons learned:

-Buchanans Spokes and Rims in California is the place to get custom spokes and
nipples from - they were great to work with.
-You do not need to put all the spokes in the hub to begin with and in fact its
best to leave one of the 4 "sets" out and put them in one at a time at the end.
(this would be the "outer" spokes on the "away from your face" side of the
hub.) - if not the "third" set can get "blocked".
-Take the laptop with the "before" picture out to the workbench unless you need
      frequent exercise.
-While not necessary, start near the valve stem hole as a reference point when
duplicating the spoke pattern from the picture
-Any 1/4" box wrench is a spoke wrench

For those who noticed in the picture, the rattle can paint on the rims sucked -
I scratched the he** out of it in those 20 failed attempts. If I did it right
the first time, no scratches would have occurred. The paint will be removed
and powder coat will go on.

Does anyone recognize this plane. The GN-1 showed up at out little
airport over the summer and has just been sitting. Looked up the
N-number and who it was built by and registered too. Latest history was
a guy in Washington and now it's in Utah. I am at the airport everyday
and no one has ever seen the owner or pilot. Just curious.....

      Brian,

I haven't seen that plane before. It has two different people on the registration.
WHIDDEN CM and BOGGS JF . I wonder if either of those two live in your
area. I also find it very strange that it is in the Exhibition Category. That
means that whoever flies it needs to get approval from the FSDO office to take
it anywhere. It is the same category that they (FSDO) typically put old war
birds in. Have you checked with the FBO that is responsible for those tie down
spots? They should know who is paying the tie down for it.

I sure hope they get it indoors before the snow hits. The owner should provide
sun glasses to anyone who looks at it. It has a very bright paint scheme.

Good luck in your search and be sure to let us know what you find out.

According to this site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willys_Go_Devil_engine , the engine put out its rated 60HP at 4000 RPM. However, like so many other things that have been around for a long time, there is a vast array of aftermarket parts and hop-ups that have been done to the engine. I have not heard of this one having been used on a Piet... yet. It wouldn't surprise me if it's been tried, though.

Maybe it is from that discovery channel show "airplane repo". Deadbeat owner cant
make bank payments, and ingenious pilot sneaks into the airplane owner's secret
hideaway to risk life and limb flying over mountains and getting shot at
for a 25k payday and television glory. Just thinking out loud.

If the 60hp is at 4, 000 , you would need a reduction drive.

Bob---you did a beautiful job lacing your rims to your hubs and the result
looks great. It was a little tedious getting the hang of lacing but

once you get one wheel figured out the next wheel goes a lot faster. Guess
that could be said for every duplicated part on the Pietenpol or

any project with repetition. Second wing went together way easier and fas
      ter than the first wing....etc.

      Thanks for sharing the photos!

The FAA has loosened the requirements of "Exhibition" category. You no longer
have to get permission for each "event" separately. You can send in one list
at the beginning of the year, list everywhere you think you might ever go, and
that's it. Not nearly as onerous a category as it used to be.

The Jeep engine I had in mind was the flathead model that came in about a 1947
mod jeep that we owned at one time. It was an old ex military jeep. I also have
similar jeep with the same motor in it now. I was just curious if anyone had
      tried to make them work.

I'm interested in the tank, depending of course on how it's priced if sold
