Thanks for all the discussion on the possibility of a Jeep engine being tried on
a piet. I just threw this out originally to see if it had been tried before.
It may not work for many reasons , or it may work fine, but maybe I should have
had a little more information on my end before I asked the question.
Therefore since I own said engine and since I like tinkering on old engines, I
will re-build , mount a prop, and see what it will do. At least then I can
come back to this forum with a little bit of data and not just the wonderings of
a newbie.

Just remember Steve, little girls grow up to be teenage girls with lots of
girlfriends. These teenage girlfriends will all want to go for airplane
rides.
Your teenage daughters will then go to college and join sororities. All of
their sorority sisters will be very enthusiastic about going for airplane
rides.
The Pietenpol ROCKS more than any other airplane for giving rides. Think
carefully before you sell your Air Camper and lose these opportunities.

Parts are plentiful and look fairly cheap for an old engine. JC whitney has
lots of them. I love Jeeps, So why not. Stick a Willy's logo on the engine.
I think Bernard would approve.

I love it when folks start to think about alternative engines like that. not tha
I don't admire he model A but something with a good strong crank, replaceable
bearings, long stroke and a history of dependability sure gets me wondering
too.- I like Ford 300 sixes but that may be a little overboard. I just flew my
Clipwing Challenger I have been advertising to sell so I can spend all my flying
thoughts on the Grega. I should have flown it today to check out the new bungees,
but I needed to get a good test on the Challenger.Raymond

Subject: | A Simple Cut - But My Simple Mind Needs Help |
I am shifting gears a bit and starting to cut some fittings and control horns.
I have made one piece of an aileron horn, and am a bit stumped. How do I make
the last cut for the flanges? In the first picture it is where the arrow points
and the plans day"cut on line". Snips? A Dremel tool? You can see the place
needing to be cut in the attached pictures. The metal is 0.032 4130 sheet steel.
I am sure you master craftsmen have an easy answer to a simple question.
Your advice is greatly appreciated

Terry, I just did mine last week (same thickness) and resorted to a bandsaw. My
snips just wouldn't do it. Since everything gets bent and/or welded, I'm not
sure how critical most of those dimensions are.

I used a band saw, like Mike, but drilled a 3/16" hole at the 'T', two 1/8"
holes at the ends of the 'T'. The 3/16" hole allows some room to move the
blade around, and can be properly rounded with a file when done.

Absolutely; that's the right attitude. Turn the Willys engine around, see about
fitting it with a prop hub and magneto, put it on those ash engine bearers,
then see what it will pull with a hand-carved wooden prop on it. Bernard would
be very pleased.
And it's water-cooled! So, to reinforce that thought, just remember that "real
FBOs carry antifreeze" ;o)

A hole should have been drilled at the end of the cut
on each side. This is standard practice to prevent
the possibility of cracks developing later in use.
It's called stop-drilling.You can still save the day
with a cabide, pointy nose bit for your dremel.
Just carefully stick it into the end of your cut and
round out a small pocket, maybe 1/8 to 5/32" dia.
Next ones, drill end holes first and cut into them.
