Dan, Steve,
I only said the things I did for a few reasons. Steve mentioned in his post that
he would look into getting in a partnership on another airplane, a certified
one at that. The cost of owning a certified plane verses a Piet is substantial.
My story about my Piet is that the plane contributed to many family memories
and his plane could do the same for him. And then at the end of Steve's
post he asked to be talked out of it.
I was just throwing out a few thoughts and not trying to make him feel bad if he
did sell. Dan , I know Steve is a good guy, I think that all on this list
fall into the good guy status. Please don't be chewing people out when the poster
ask for comments like Steve did.

I can appreciate where Dan is coming from, considering he had to make a similar
decision not long ago, and having been on the receiving end of a bit of a guilt
trip (well-intentioned as it may have been) about selling his Piet as well.
The ownership cost of a certified aircraft could be allayed if Steve is able to
share it with other partners. In regard to making family memories, if Steve follows
through with his plan of acquiring a "fun taildragger" that both the kids
could fly in (a short-wing Piper for example, as shown in one of his pics),
then he has the opportunity to involve them equally in making new family flying
memories, instead of just one at a time.
While it would be unfortunate for Steve to sell the Piet, if it allows him to create
a situation where he can more fully involve his girls in aviation and share
those experiences with them both, then it sounds like the way to go.

Engine oil mixed with watery condensation being ducted to the carburetor would
be a bad idea. Much better to let that stuff spatter itself on the belly.

Michael, you might consider installing an oil-air separator. Aircraft
Spruce sells one that is pretty cheap (though a bit on the big size). Most
of the corvair guys install separators. I'd love to have one on my Pacer.
Oil on the belly of an airplane is no fun to clean. Ken

Mike,
I have a Ford model A and have a copper tube from the old distributor port t
o the intake tube to the carburetor. The previous owner made the set up and s
ince I am using different manifolds I had to modify it a little. I haven't r
un the engine since overhaul but I have great confidence in the system.

In theory it would work quite well. The only problem is if the air/oil
separator gets overwhelmed (it can and does happen). Then it will be
pumping oil into your carb heat section. When you open it you will now be
pushing oily air into your carb and potentially vaporized oil.
The one on my Vtail dumps it out the bottom of the plane.

It's possible that configuration is given for installations that will be
operating in more extreme cold weather environments. Venting into the hot
air side of the carb heat box would avoid having the outlet of the
overboard vent tube freeze up in very cold temps.

Subject: | Re: Thinking about selling... |
You're a good man Dan Yocum! You speak lots of truth in those lines above. That
being said, I can hardly imagine my kids growing up without the Piet. They
helped with the build, at least the ones I had at the time, and they've been
involved all along. Many of my and I'm sure many of their best memories have
been in some way tied to the Piet. Some very important discussions about possible
boyfriends and other important daughter matters have taken place on late
night washing and waxing visits to the hangar. The amazing one on one experiences
I've had with each of my four kids could fill a book. After our weeklong
Barnstorming 2012 trip that my then 8 year old son and I went on, I made a picture
book of the trip and gave it to him for Christmas. He regularly reads himself
to sleep at night with it. (Maybe its not that exciting! Ha!). And there's
nothing like camping with one of the kids beside the Piet. Anyway.... It's
different for everyone. I'm blessed with a fantastic and supportive wife and
family. Therefore it's worked. If for some reason it looked like it wasn't going
to work and was causing stress in the family, the Piet would need to go.

Subject: | Jeep motor thoughts |
I've done a lot of research about using auto engines to reproduce the older,
slow turning, high-capacity WWI aero engines. Here are some things to
consider when thinking about using the Jeep or any other motor in a Piet.
Firstly, you need to know the weight. Keeping it around or lighter than the
weight of a Ford is probably wise. Heavier engines have been used, but it
becomes a cycle of diminishing returns.
Don't get too caught up in HP. Torque is what spins a prop, HP keeps a car
rolling down the highway. You want an engine that develops it's torque at a
lower rpm, the same speeds the prop needs to spin. If you have an engine
developing peak torque at 4,000, what will it develop at 2,000?. You can't
spin most props at 4,000.
Using the formula to find torque of HP time 5252 divided by rpm, I'd
estimate that a very strong Ford (or Chris's Mitsubishi), turning at 2,200
is developing about 170 ft lbs of torque to spin it's prop. This would
probably be a good starting point when choosing a motor.
The faster the engine needs to turn up to develop it's power, the smaller
the prop becomes (corvair, 0200, etc) Two different breeds of cat; slow
turning, torquey tractor type motors turning very large diameter props
verses higher revving engines turning smaller props much faster.
One could always put a reduction drive to slow down the prop. This adds
complication, weight, length and another failure area, but there are some
good ones out there now. I really like the planetary one made by Tracy
Crook.
FYI, the Ford is about 200 cubic inches in capacity. More than most people
think. It spins a 76X42 or 44 prop and a strong one can come close to 2,000
static.
This all needs to be coupled with a light airframe and it'll perform nicely.
My guess, if Oscar's research on the Jeep motor is correct is that it would
be a bit weak, unless you were able to turn it up faster using a smaller
prop.
Like everyone says, build one up and see what it'll spin!
Good luck!
