One other option for the "tabs" on the formed control horns is to make them from
three pieces of metal, as opposed to two. Rather than bending the side tabs,
a separate channel can be bent, and welded on. The advantage of this method
(aside from being easier to fabricate) is that the channel can be made to actually
fit the wood that it attaches to. If the horns are made "to the plans",
the gap between the bent flanges will be wider than the profile of the wood where
it attaches (see photo of control horn in position for clarification). Unfortunately,
I haven't welded my horns yet, so I can't provide photos of the
finished product, so I have just positioned them in place for these photos.
In my opinion, the formed sheet metal control horns are aesthetically much more
appealing than flat steel horns (especially on a vintage aircraft like the Pietenpol),
and, as long as they are properly welded and treated, are a superior
design. The slight bends in the sheet metal produce a much stiffer horn than
any solid horn of similar weight. Increasing the thickness to .09" increases
the overall weight of each horn by 50%. And, to top it all off, the formed horns
really are not difficult to build. Honestly.

      I like it, Bill.
I was just about to start the elevator horns and, like Terry Hand, was concerned
      about those behind-the-flanges cuts. Your approach solves several problems;
fit, ease of fabrication, and that niggling feeling that rainwater/condensation
is seeping inside and collecting in the bottom arm.
Thanks for another idea I wish I had thought of.

Here in the UK I started in 1995 and had it on it's wheels by 1997, then
lost job and no money, then got a job and went on to build a house,
retired 2009 and am hoping for an engine run in two weeks time.

It has been fun all the way.

Dropped my press brake on my toe yesterday as I was tipping it back carefully
to replace a valve part - so as I type this I am in the exam room waiting
for the x-ray results (probably just a bad bruise they think). Building the Piet
is one of the best experiences ever - very gratifying.....

Built 6 Big Piets in 6 years and 3 months. Worked every Monday night and
after a couple of years, added one Saturday per month. Some summers, we had
a work week for all that could attend.. 5 are now flying cause one builder
got a burr under his saddle and quit just after I painted his Piet. But
hey....we stayed together longer than most marriages. LOL
The group building and peer pressure really helped us to finish the 5 Big

      Michael,

The Lambert that was on Lowell's airplane is now on Frank Pavliga's Sky Gypsy.
Actually, right now it's in his garage for an overhaul. Frank turned it over
to me one day and I went out and played with it for a while. What a super engine/airframe
combination. Very well balanced and a huge amount of thrust!

I spent 12 years building mine. However, that included finishing college, getting
married, having 4 kids, moving 6 times, building a house, building a couple
of shops, and one big hangar collapse after it was finished the first time but
before it first flew. I think I could write a book just on the building experiences!

This is exactly how the elevator and rudder horns on NX18235 were built. It
is a worthwhile change from the plans.
      =C2-
And for those of you who haven't decided whether to use the formed control
horns or flat sheet, read Bill Church's last paragraph regarding aesthetics
, weight, strength and build difficulty.
Bill is correct on all counts.

One other option for the "tabs" on the formed control horns is to make them
from three pieces of metal, as opposed to two. =C2-Rather than bending t
he side tabs, a separate channel can be bent, and welded on. =C2-The adva
ntage of this method (aside from being easier to fabricate) is that the cha
nnel can be made to actually fit the wood that it attaches to. =C2-If the
horns are made "to the plans", the gap between the bent flanges will be wi
der than the profile of the wood where it attaches (see photo of control ho
rn in position for clarification). =C2-Unfortunately, I haven't welded my
horns yet, so I can't provide photos of the finished product, so I have ju
st positioned them in place for these photos.
In my opinion, the formed sheet metal control horns are aesthetically much
more appealing than flat steel horns (especially on a vintage aircraft like
the Pietenpol), and, as long as they are properly welded and treated, are
a superior design. =C2-The slight bends in the sheet metal produce a much
stiffer horn than any solid horn of similar weight. =C2-Increasing the t
hickness to .09" increases the overall weight of each horn by 50%. =C2-An
d, to top it all off, the formed horns really are not difficult to build.
      =C2-Honestly.
      Bill C.

| Subject: | Re: Thinking about selling... |

      Hey Steve,

      Here's another view...

The Piet is something like a sports car. Not very practical, useful, while not
terribly expensive, it DOES cost to own, used or not... LOTS of sports cars get
sold due to family reasons, and certainly family is the priority. However..

It sounds like you have use of other more useful planes, that's AWESOME. However,
it doesn't sound like you own them... if that's the case, use is at someone
else's discretion. Always a nagging situation.

It doesn't sound like OWNING the Piet is a detriment to the family. If it were,
I'd be all for selling it.

Most folks who sell their little sports car, rarely ever get one again...

I think your Piet is priced correctly (or thereabouts, maybe worth a little more,
maybe a little less, but it sounds about right having bought one not that
long ago). It's probably not gonna go up much in value, nor down... There's
not much reason for selling now vs later insofar as market.

      >From what I can gather from your post, you generally want to keep it. The reason
for selling being not a lot of use. I guess if it were me, I'd price it where
I couldn't afford NOT to sell it and see what happens! If it stays with
you, it was meant to be. If it sells, you made some good pocket change.

It's true, there will always be one available for about that price, but are you
always going to be able to just get it? It's FAR easier to justify NOT buying
one, rather than selling if the reason isn't compelling...

      Good luck!

Jack, I'm trying to be nice and cannot say what I really think......but as
we were building using assembly line methods and kept all the planes
together, we mounted tail and all controls, mounted firewall and engine and
all wiring, installed fuel tanks and plumbed everything, mounted landing
gear and plumbed brakes, covered and painted wings, tail, and fuselage all
in hopes he would get his head out of his. We did all this after he quit
work. We still to this day don't have a clue what caused this, but I'm sure
      it was our fault!
      Thanks
      Barry
      Big Piets NX971BP, NX972BP, NX973BP, NX974BP, NX975BP ( of course the BP in
our N numbers stand for Bernard Pietenpol and Big Piet) and NX976BP is also
our EAA Chapter number, and guess who got that one. Bummer
Ps: I wish you had suggested the polka dots earlier. LOL

Barry, maybe you shouldn't have painted his Big Piet pink with purple polka
      dots.

LOL The group building
and peer pressure really helped us to finish the 5 Big Piets Barry

How many of you fine builders spent more than 18 months building your RVs, I
      mean, Pietenpols?

13 and counting. One more wing to go.
Plus a slew of little stuff that always
      turnsup when least expected.
