Enough already, I get the message and will go spend an hour in the aircraft
factory tonight. I was getting a little bad about putting off production.
First, family visited for the weekend. Then my wife and granddaughter had
to sell things at the school sporting events, then I had to go get the
car's tags reregistered, then, then I had several long days at work, then..
then ... then..... It has been a week since I touched the Piet. Last night
I read more "perserverance" emails and then watched some first flight
videos. Now I am fired up again.

1999 - I was hopping TV channels and I happened upon a recap of EAA airventure
and a segment on Mike Cuys' award winning airplane. "I gotta get one of those"
I said. Ordered plans immediately. In 2005 or so, I built some tail feathers.
Life altering event in 2010 convinced me it was time to commit to the project,
and I did. Started in earnest Oct 16 2010 with the Corvair engine which ran
368 days after my first Corvair College. Started building the Piet August
2011. I do a little every day or say when Im home. I'm having a blast!

RE-PIET was started by an older gent in the late eighties I think. He
puttered on it in Florida during the winters up until 2000 when he got sick.
I bought it in 2002 with much of the basic woodwork done (or so I
believed.). I finished it in 2009 when it had it's "incident" and the spent
the next 2.5 years rebuilding it. First flew again August of 12.

Y'all are an inspiration. Thanks for sharing. My hat's off to all of
you that have finished building, or are close to finishing, their own
      Air Campers.

If you missed it, the latest issue of the Experimenter has a 2 page
spread on the 2013 EAA Airventure Perseverance Awards: 9 planes, 8 are
RVs, 4 were built in under 2 years. That's not exactly a display of
      "perseverance" in my opinion.

I'm not belittling those builder's efforts and accomplishments -
building and flying *any* airplane is a monumental achievement - I'm
just saying that the builders in this group show more perseverance than
those insert-tab-A-into-slot-B builders and are far more deserving of a
      Perseverance Award.

      Cheers!
      Dan

      Hi MIke,
I always liked seeing the pictures of your building your Piet in the house.
We have a dining room I keep teasing my wife that would make a perfect mac

So far though I'm still working in the garage!
Popcorn is good to eat while building; any spillage is just additional bouy

I just purchased some spruce spar boards for two sets of wings and also the wood
for the the tail surfaces. I purchased this from an individual who had chosen
not to build . The wood is In Rockingham North Carolina, and I need to get
to Arkansas. Since it is 15 feet long shipping is expensive as you all know...
So far the cheapest Quote I have is just under 300 dollars from FedEx but
the owner will have to take it to a business location for pick up. Does anyone
      have any cheaper suggestions?

I would look in your yellow pages for a freight forwarder and make a bunch of calls.
I've shopped around in the past when shipping gliders around country (20
ft x 12 inch diameter at 90 lbs). Ended up paying 200.00 a few years ago from
      SLC to MIA.

      Aviken,

This may not be what you want to hear but I'd be inclined to drive from
Arkansas to North Carolina to pickup the wood myself. Since you are buying
it from a private individual where returns might be impossible, this would
give you a chance to look each piece over carefully before handing over the
money. You might even want to download from Chris Tracey's westcoastpiet
website, the information for grading spar material. That way, you can
reassure yourself that it really is appropriate for airplane use.

      Cheers, Ken

youship.com or something... Google "ltl" which means "less than load" for places
that'll quote you something cheaper than that likely.

A buddy of mine was quoted $1500 to ship some 4x8 sheets of honeycomb, but got
them shipped for a couple hunnert using youship (or who ever they were, should
be evident). And that was from CA to GA.

Antique tractor website forums usually have opportunity haul discussion areas that
can be helpful. Probably the BEST underground railroad is the old woodworking
machine group (owwm.org). You'll have to join (no spam, it's safe) to get
access to the opportunity haul forum called "rucker's rodeo". It's a VERY TIGHTLY
run bulletin board, pretend it's some woodworking machine part... like
rip fence rails or something similarly sized or you'll get bounced off. Once
you make contact with someone directly, it won't be a big deal.

For example, I'll be running from Chatt to Oshkosh round trip in the next couple
weeks and will make a post there that I'll have room available if someone needs
a machine moved... Or a wing, or motor, whatever.

Completed my solo cross country Tuesday and am getting close to completing my flight
instruction for a Sport License. Attached is a video I took with a GoPro
camera. Can anyone tell me why the ground is wavy? I hope to get this all
figured out before I complete my Pietenpol!

Way to go, John! I wonder if your camera is mounted on something that's
      vibrating?

      John,

Way to go! You and I are that much closer to getting to Broadhead in the next
      few years.

I have not had this experience in a Cub, only a 172, and other "enclosed" cockpits.
You have added motivation to my build.

      Gary,

Im not sure there is anything in this 1946 Cub that isnt vibrating! The camera
is mounted on the window with a suction cup.

My guess, not claiming any knowledge of audio-visual, is that it's vibrating with
the glass. You might do better on some frame work....or fastened to your head!
I'm sure you are steady as a rock....
