My son Tracy and myself attended the Southeastern Regional Fly-In at Evergreen,AL.
I met up with 2 of our Piet listers and Pietenpol owners but sadly I had the
only Piet there. They explained to me why they didn't bring their Piets but
I will let them post why.
The judges were good to my Piet. Pictures are here:

Ray,
Great Pics. Wish I was up there to have a close look at it. Looks like excellent
workmanship.
I have an idea that could save you a whole lot of building time. Instead of raising
the roof of your shop you could remove the landing gear and put the fuse
on a low dolly to move it around. Besides it is a lot easier to cover without
the gear on it. This way you will get to the Frazuer Lake gathering sooner.

Crank Extension, last one is available, This machined item will allow the prop
to pull air at an increase , as I have used one on all my Ford and Funk Engines,
now I have a 90 hp Lambert prop that will turn 2000 RPM plus on a B block.
The new machined cost is $ 370.00, first come first serve,
By the way when I had my Incident at Oshkosh, the Ground-Adjustable alum, prop
was damaged and the load that was put on the crank was absorbed by the Extension,
which was bent, and required replacement, no damage to engine, after very
close inspection.

Problem solved! I just removed the wheels and set the axles on the dollies, w
ork great. The center section is mounted and very sturdy. Things are going w

I think it is obvious I laminated them. I made the struts in 2 pieces. Then took
a 3/8" corebox bit in the router table and cut a rounded 3/8" wide and 3/16'
deep groove in each piece from end to end. I sandwiched a 3/8" diameter 4130
steel rod continuous. After the pieces were all glued up I ran them through the
planer to get a final 1" thickness, then set the tablesaw on 20 degrees tilt
and cut a chamfer on all 4 corners, finished with sandpaper by hand. I failed
to take a picture gluing the rods in.
All the wood in the struts and landing gear was sawed on a homemade band sawmill
I made back in the late 70's. Never dreamed it would be in an airplane.

I have been struggling with making a patch to cover the chinny chin chin of
my engine cowling below the air cleaner. The original had a really rough
looking patch made from strips of aluminum covered with screen door mesh
and bondo. It started out looking bumpy and as I removed things it just
got rougher. Until I had a ragged hole.
As I kept looking at this cowling, I noticed that it is not symmetrical.
It looks good, but when you start looking the original manufacturer
obviously free handed it. The cowling actually looks pretty good. The
patch will have to be "Custom fit".
I watched videos of gentlemen using english wheels to make formed
wheelpants for beautiful Brit planes. Other guys were masters with a hammer
and shot filled bags. I went outside and played around with a ball peen
hammer, a bag of sand and a piece of scrap aluminium. I discovered that it
is really easy to make a rippled piece of aluminium with cracks.
Then I sat with pieces a paperbag and masking tape. I made ever more
complex and bigger pieces, requiring two and three pieces of ever larger
papers, more bends, cuts and rivets.
Then I stepped back, cleared my mind. I cut a piece of paper bag just
enough larger than the hole to get a good looking set of rivets in it. I
then placed it over the hole and shaped it. I put the fold on bottom and
taped it on. I then pulled it off and cut where the fold was. I put it back
on, taped it and took it off. Looked better and simpler than my previous
overthought efforts,
I did it again but better this time with two cuts, adjusted and played with
it and I think I have found a good looking shape that is simple to make

I'd say go for it. What more can you want? Besides if you decide you
don't like it or it develops cracks, you can always redo it later. But it
sounds like the right way forward.

Ray; forgive me if I've missed it, but where exactly are you located, and where
is this all-night Piet party supposed to happen on November 9? Willows? I was
just by there on Thursday and again on Saturday last week, headed down to Sacramento
and back. I was scoping out fuel and rest stops for my planned trip
down to Frazier Lake next June in 41CC. I know I'll want to stop in the Montague/Weed
area once I make it over the Siskiyou Summit, but from there I'll need
another stop somewhere around Chico.
I can't make it down there Nov. 9, but maybe some of the Piet folk will show up
and keep you company.

Just this evening I was saying to Jay, my wife, that the original Air Camper was
laid out and framed on the wooden floor of a barn, in the off season when farmers
were done bringing in the crops, and that it was built out of commonly available
materials in a simple and unpolished way. I was bemoaning the fact that
I am now on my 3rd attempt at getting a decent paint job on two aluminum cooling
eyebrows for my engine. The first attempt was a horrible mass of fisheyed
paint. The second attempt had very little fisheye but I got too sluggish
with the rattle can and the paint sagged and ran, and I despaired. Now it's stripped
and cleaned and ready for attempt no. 3, but I'm wondering why, when the
original 1929 airplanes were built and finished simply, but flew just fine
anyway.
A friend of mine sent me a video of a J-2 Cub with the Everal single-blade prop,
flying around the patch. What struck me was the camera view out the cockpit.
Besides the countryside moving out in front of and below the airplane, the
aileron cross-connect cable is seen passing between the two wing roots, and the
sawing motion that the connecting turnbuckle makes as the pilot works the controls
is the essence of the kind of simple geometry and construction that characterizes
our airplanes. It's just flat not rocket science.
Shape a piece of metal to cover the hole that you have. Smooth it as best you
can. Get some clecoes and rivets and fasten it in place. Paint it with whatever
you have at hand. You're done. You will love flying your Air Camper when
it's done and flying.

Oscar,
I am in Colusa, Ca, about 40 miles south south west of Chico. If you come this
way, please plan on staying here, if you need a stop. In Chico, you might consider
Chico Ranchaero airport. It has a grass strip I learned to fly off back in
the very early '60s. It can be a little rough due to squirrels and there digging!
On the 9th, Gary Booth, Chris, Tim and maybe 1-2others will be here. Whenever you
come back this way, please stop in, even unannounced! I am almost always here,
or very close by. And feel free to stay here, if it is at all convenient
for you. The same goes for any Pietenpoler!
I will at least see you in Frazier Lake.

Steve Hi!
Your efforts of metal bashing are recently and well remembered.
I did manage to sort out that front area of the lower Rose Bowl/Air
Intake using a similar technique to yourself.
The plate I made did just about conform to shape albeit with a slightly
planished finish.
The actual sponge air filter area has a stainless steel (304-1.5mm)
surround plashed out with a mesh insert over the filter. It look good.
Unfortunately this airplane is no more. Totalled last year in a climb
out incident. It went in at 40+ degrees and the front end was smashed.
It's replacement is also A65 powered with same type of cowlings. Will do
similar once engine returns from overhaul.
I have found a traditional metal basher who does beautiful work on
vintage cars. He has a fibre glass Rose Bowl as a pattern and is making
aluminium version.
The 'first fit' was perfect and it's now back with him for finishing.
ACS versions are about $1500+ by the time they get to Europe.
I've attached a picture of front end. It might show the sort of thing
you are doing?
