Jack, I have been losing weight and am now only 196lbs. Light as a feather!
You make a good point. It will be structural but if It were to break it
would not make the plane unuseable or dangerous.

Subject: | Re: Post Construction Rear Cockpit Step |
Steve, going from memory as I am not at home to look at the setup, the outs
ide, fixed sleeve is 3/4"- and the step itself is 5/8".- Both are .035"
SS tube. (316L)- The tubes were scrap pieces I had on hand. I am not cle
ar on what you mean by: "Yours appears to go all the way across...". The en
tire setup is only about 10" long and stops under the pilot seat. As noted
below, the outside end rests on the longeron and the inside end rests under
the seat, as weight is applied to the step, it can't move in a see-saw fas
hion. I have "load tested" the step by slightly bouncing on it with full bo
dy weight on one foot...it held just fine. =0A=0AI kept the fully extended
length of the step to a measurement that I felt was long enough to get a go
od foot hold on, but short enough that it would not bend under normal use.
Of course, you could use a heavier wall tube for strength and make it longe
r, but that adds weight. While seated inside the plane, I can reach around
and pull the step out easily.=0A=0AIf interested in sharing what you come u
p with, I would be interested in seeing pictures.=0A=0AIf I may be of any f
urther assistance, please let me know. =0A=0A=0AIf God is your co-pilot...s

Hello David - Mark here. I am one of the guys buying this fairly large run of
strut material - we are about 10 people in total, and each of us are getting 8
lengths of 2.8 - 3.0 M (about 10 feet) - 2.69" x 1.44" x 0.049". There is even
a guy in Australia who is getting a set. It may even be possible to add to
the order, although they should be making the draw very soon. they will be about
100 for each length, so about $170 each for you + shipping and any import
duty, taxes, etc......
I can enquire if you are interested, otherwise, some of us will have some to sell,
if we decide NOT to build a Scout!!
Mark

Subject: | Welding control horns... |
Hello good Piet-ple,
Well I finished fabricating the rudder and elevator control horns just in time
to have them welded by Mike (from "Ready Weld") on Friday. I schedule him to stop
over "just a little before I am ready" to motivate me to make progress (ha!)
A big nod goes to Bill Church (just in time - reading this forum last week) so
I could include his "dang, that's a better way" idea. (His idea is a channel as
a third part instead of bending over flanges.)
Attached are some photos of Mike tack welding a horn along with a shot of a finished
elevator horn in position. The 5/8 flat stock runs all the way to the channel
- inside the horn - and was welded to the channel before the horn was welded
around it. I am putting a bolt through the flange in a different orientation
(hole through the wood elevator spar not yet drilled in this picture) so it
does not interfere with the covering. I have also added pictures of the belcrank
assembly horns that he also welded on Friday. My cables and the horns will
be on the exterior of the plane such as several folks like Dick Navratil have
done - for a more "olde fashioned" look.....
Feels like real good progress whenever a whole day of welding takes place. Now
I have to figure out the routing for the rudder cables themselves...(!)

Very nice looking job Jake. I made my horns out of flat stock, now I kinda wish
I would have followed the plans. Oh well maybe on the next one.
