Hello Lister's,
Since the list is a little slow I will tell you what I did last Tuesday.
We have the best flying weather in the So. Cal high desert during the fall months.
Tuesday was one of those days. The temp was near 70 degrees with some very
high overcast, there was no wind all day. About 2pm I decided that I couldn't
take it anymore and left for the airport. This time to go flying. It was
a perfect day to do some slow flight practice. I just lingered around the valley
about 500 AGL at about 50 MPH and did a couple of landings at a local dirt
strip. After about thirty minutes I got this crazy idea to see if I could land
without using the stick after all the air was so calm that I had been flying
with just rudder and throttle inputs for the last few minutes anyway. So why
not my brain said. I headed back to my home airport to give it a try. I typically
touch down at about 40 MPH. that is about stall speed for me since I
don't have the Piet wing. I do have an adjustable trim tab for pitch so I trimmed
the plane for 45 MPH at 1800 RPM. This had the plane flying nose high at
about a 3 point attitude and I could either climb or descend with with just a
couple of hundred RPM change. I think this is going to work. Now on the downwind
leg everything in the world was right. Smooth air, wings level and the
tower has cleared me to land. I am the only flying machine around. With my hand
off of the stick (but very close by) I was able to turn crosswind then final
with just rudder and throttle inputs. Yeah, that worked. Now I pulled the
throttle back to about 1600 RPM and I am able to see a reasonable descent rate.
At this point everything is just fine a dandy so I increase the throttle a little
to see if I can slow the descent, it works great. Back to 1600 RPM again
and now reaching for the runway at 45 MPH. Looks good, wings level and centered
on the runway. As I got within a few feet of touchdown I added a touch of
throttle and then it happened, touchdown, mains first with the tail wheel about
6 inches off the ground. Not even a bounce. After the tail touched down
I did hold!
the sti
ck in my lap just cause that's what you're supposed to do. The plane rolled out
straight and I had a big smile.
I had fun Tuesday and discovered that I could land it in still air with just throttle
and rudder control. It was a great way to end a four day weekend.
Piets are sure fun to fly and they are an honest well flying airplane.
Happy building and flying guys,

Very nice Scott, next time try the same thing except instead of using
rudder for turns hold you left or right arm out of the cockpit.

Sounds like your Piet has become as familiar and comfortable as a pair of nicely
worn in shoes. Hope to some day have that same feeling.

Rick,
The arm thing does work. If I put both arms out, the plane will pitch up. When
I bring them back in it will pitch back down. Always fun to do when the person
in the front cockpit is flying it. They don't know you are doing it. I have
had Air Force test pilots in the front seat and done this to them. It is
funny to here them explain to me that something undetermined is wrong with the
plane. It really messes with them. They just shake their head when I tell them
what I was doing.
Fun stuff,

Hi Scott,
That does sound like fun; smooth air and no hurry the Piet way.

Didn't think about using both arms for elevator. So although this would be
somewhat foolhardy you could possibly land a Piet (after lined up on a long
final) in very smooth air with hands off the joystick and the rudder bar
and any trim control AND the throttle. Just waving the arms, left, right,
or both.

Rick,
I think you chose the proper word for that kind of attempt. I'll leave that for
someone else to try. It took me 40 years to try what I did. :)

Nice story, Scott. I don't have much dihedral, and letting go of the
stick...ever...doesn't seem to work too well! Makes refolding the map a
bitch!! Guess I'll have to get a gps...

Subject: | Re: A-65 and radio rfi.. |
Guys,
I know this may have bed discussed, but I have two questions:
1) I will be using an A-65 on my SkyScout without electrical. It has Eisemann Am-4
mags and non shielded harnesses. What have you done to suppress the rfi noise?
2) I plan on using my iCom A-24 hand held radio and would like to put a ground
plane behind the seat for a remote antenna. What antennas have you used?
I have the same mags and harness in the Aeronca and the rfi is so bad, the radio
is useless. Any suggestions welcomed. We have the VERY OLD STYLE PLUGS, do I
have to use the newer shielded plugs and harness, or just the harness?
Thanks,
Ray Krause
