Ray, My understanding is that you need the shielded harness AND plugs.
That's what I have in my A65 and the radio is crystal clear. I have Slick
mags and they came with the shielded harness, so I haven't tried it without
shielding. Back when I owned a J-3 with an A65 (and Eismann mags) the
handheld radio had not been invented so there was no problem.

      Guys,

I know this may have bed discussed, but I have two questions:

      1) I will be using an A-65 on my SkyScout without electrical. It has
Eisemann Am-4 mags and non shielded harnesses. What have you done to
      suppress the rfi noise?

      2) I plan on using my iCom A-24 hand held radio and would like to put a
ground plane behind the seat for a remote antenna. What antennas have you
      used?

I have the same mags and harness in the Aeronca and the rfi is so bad, the
radio is useless. Any suggestions welcomed. We have the VERY OLD STYLE
PLUGS, do I have to use the newer shielded plugs and harness, or just the
      harness?

      Thanks,

      Ray,
Attached are pictures of the antenna/ground plane in my Grega, it works
well. In the seat back open picture the antenna is black and gp are green.
I have one Eisemann Am-4 mag with shielded harness.
Have you checked the AD on the Eisemann's?

It has been a little slow lately on the forum, and I know the recent cold snap
has slowed me as well as others down. With no heat in the workshop I had to move
my center section into the house to do some gluing (pictures to follow in another
post in a day or so). I don't think T88 likes 32 degrees in the shop!

I thought I would post some photos of the passenger door recently welded into my
fuselage by William Wynne and his outstanding welder, Vern Stephenson. The photos
and comments are self-explanatory, but I thought it might help the builders
contemplating or building the steel tube fuselage.

If you need any welding work done and you are anywhere near the Jacksonville FL
area, I would highly encourage you to contact William. Yes, he is The Corvair
Authority, and I am sure most of us think of him that way. However, he is also
a highly skilled A&P with a place in his heart for Pietenpols and Pietenpol
builders. He comes to Brodhead every year to talk Corvairs, but also talk Pietenpols.
So, if you need help, give him a call.

P.F. Beck made a very nice presentation at Broadhead in 2013 regarding making an
antenna and ground plane for the Pietenpol. The ground plane needs to be equal
in width and length to the height of your antenna.

As for what to make the antenna from, he suggests finding some leftover welding
rod! He can be reached at the Barnwell regional airport in Barnwell SC. for

Hello to everyone. My name is Keith Goff. I live in Graniteville SC and am
new to the list. I'm about an hour North of PF Beck and Don Harper, very lu
cky for me! I started my project in March of 2012 so I'm about a year and a
half in. I have a rolling frame on bicycle tires and my Pietenpolr ribs ar
e built. I will try to attach a couple of pictures, the garage in the back
ground is not mine. I am building in a 12x24 work shop that isn't big enoug
h to take a picture of the whole airplane in. I look forward to being on th
is list and appreciate all of the great information posted here.

Thanks, Jack. I am not sure how the Eisemann mags that I have accept the shielded
harness. With shielded plugs, are the shielded ignition wires grounded at the
plug AND at the mag ends? The original Eisemann mags (AM-4) did not support
shielded plugs or wires, I think.

Jack, do you just use the hand held's standard little antenna?

      Thanks,

Why is this like shooting ducks in a barrel every time?

My Uncle Tony has already answered all of your questions. This time 18 years ago.
       You just need to take
time to listen to and read my Uncle Tony's advice.

      Skip,

Yes, I have conformed to the AD, no problem with the coils on the mags. Do you
also run shielded plugs? Where did you get the shielded harness, make it? And
if so, how did you make it?

On the antenna: the coax cable central wire connects to the antenna which is 23"
long, and the ground wire connects to each of the 23" ground pieces? The ground
pieces are then attached to the fuselage sides vertically and the antenna
is held horizontally, or parallel to the longerons? And these measurements work
      well for communications frequencies?

Thanks, this really helps, just what I needed for the antenna.

Looking forward to your response. Way too many questions?!

      Thanks,

      Ray Krause

Thanks you, Mike! I should have referenced Uncle before I asked that question.
Just hope some others in our group may have come up with some "other" ideas.

I will be sure to check the Uncle first, in the future! I do have all his material.

      Thanks for the reference,

| Subject: | Almost ten years later |

Ordered my Pietenpol plans on 10/28/2003 and it flew the first time on
10/24/2013, four days short of ten years later.

      Some details:

      Engine: Corvair 2700 cc
      Prop: Tennessee 66x30
      Empty wt: 736
Flight test CG (half fuel): 16 1/4" aft of LE (1 1/4" back from front
      limit, cabanes vertical)
      Runway elevation: 6840 ft.
      Temp: 53F
      Runway density alt: 8112 ft.
Maneuvering altitude over airport: 9000 ft (10215 ft. DA, and could easily
      go higher)
Total flight time in last 38 years prior to flight: 2 hrs dual in 172 and
.9 hr of dual touch and goes in back seat of a Decathlon.
CHT: 370 F max on climb and 340 F at cruise (stock 12 plate cooler).
      Oil Pressure: mid 40s

Flight went great. I have flown lots of spam cans and although I am bias of
course I have to agree with Mike C and Jack P when they say that nothing is
as much fun as flyin a Piet. Very easy to fly, takeoff and land (even with
      zero time in type).

Only change needed after flight - add front support for cowling (air
pressure pushed it against prop hub), flew hands off, no trim needed.

Want to thank everyone on the forum (and WW) for providing answers to all
my stupid questions and moral support. Building a machine from scratch and
flying it is definitely one of the most memorable events you will ever
experience as everyone that has done it has said.

One other thing I learned, putting a video camera on top of a Pietenpol fin
makes for a shaky video at full power (but it's better than no video):

Ray-- I don't have shielded ignition on my Eisemann mags either but I did carefully
      follow Tony's advice in shielding
my magneto switch P-lead wires, grounding them at both ends and that had to have
helped because I can use my
handheld radio without too much ignition noise.

Here's something my United Airlines buddy Joe Tomasic told me years ago when flying
our Champ and using a radio
with unshielded ignition......'just switch to fly on one mag while you're listening
or transmitting.' Brilliant. That cuts out half the noise.

      Mike C.

That's great, Rick!! What a great feeling!

I had to add front support for the cowling, too. In case you are interested,
I have attached a picture of the speaker muffler that I put on my Sony video
camera. I sell these for $4.75 ea. ;-)

Subject: Pietenpol-List: Almost ten years later

Ordered my Pietenpol plans on 10/28/2003 and it flew the first time on
10/24/2013, four days short of ten years later.

      Some details:

      Engine: Corvair 2700 cc

      Prop: Tennessee 66x30

      Empty wt: 736

Flight test CG (half fuel): 16 1/4" aft of LE (1 1/4" back from front limit,
      cabanes vertical)

      Runway elevation: 6840 ft.

      Temp: 53F

      Runway density alt: 8112 ft.

Maneuvering altitude over airport: 9000 ft (10215 ft. DA, and could easily
      go higher)

Total flight time in last 38 years prior to flight: 2 hrs dual in 172 and .9
hr of dual touch and goes in back seat of a Decathlon.

Want to thank everyone on the forum (and WW) for providing answers to all my
stupid questions and moral support. Building a machine from scratch and
flying it is definitely one of the most memorable events you will ever
experience as everyone that has done it has said.

One other thing I learned, putting a video camera on top of a Pietenpol fin
makes for a shaky video at full power (but it's better than no video):

Congratulations Rick; it looked like a nice flight around the patch. The wind noise
makes it hard to hear that smooth running Corviar though! Looked like a beautiful
      late afternoon flight.
      Cheers,

The pictures that are attached to this post are pictures I took of Keith's Pietenpol
project that he brought to this past weekend's Corvair College #27 in Barnwell.
As you can see, he does nice work. Far better than mine, that is for sure.

He told me that he had been "lurking" on the Forum for a while. I told him with
nice work like this, he needs to post and be an active part of the forum.

As you can see, Keith does nice work (other than stealing his children's bicycle
      rims [Laughing] ).

Welcome to the ACTIVE forum, Keith.

      Gary,

Now I have dome information I can use against you in the future! I have the complete
set, but forget to use them until someone points out my mistake! Some of
his stuff is repetitive and/or self evident. Good stuff, just the same.

      Flying this weekend?

Hi fellows, please don't laugh too hard at my complex mock-up. Just wanted to
confirm that I would fit... I do touch a little at the shoulders, but I don't
think that will be a game changer . I really want to stay with the plans but
      what do ya'll think?

I'll fly in the morning, if the wind dies down. It's "Airport Day" at LHM
and avgas is a mere $4.98!! Come on down....!
