On another note, there is a good write up in the October issue of general av

Ray,
Yes, that is how the wires connect. I think you must be seeing the elevator
connecting rod as the antenna. The antenna is vertical against the fuze
side. I wanted the antenna vertical and put the ground planes where they
would fit. Yes, the 23" length works well for the middle of the com
frequencies.
I bought the plane with 2 non impulse Bendix(lunchbox) mags. I got the
Eisemann on ebay, so it would be safer to hand prop, and a guy on the field
gave me the shielded harness, he had an incomplete set of 7 and I only
needed 4. They aren't really made to fit the Eisemann, I got some of those
auto type rubber booties and just stuck the leads in the Eisemann and they
have been good for about 200 hours now. Yes, I am running the same standard
aircraft shielded plugs that came with the plane, used with the Bendix mags.

Do you also run shielded plugs? Where did you get the shielded harness,
make it? And if so, how did you make it?

is 23" long, and the ground wire connects to each of the 23" ground pieces?
The ground pieces are then attached to the fuselage sides vertically and
the antenna is held horizontally, or parallel to the longerons? And these
measurements work well for communications frequencies?

Ordered my Pietenpol plans on 10/28/2003 and it flew the first time on 10/2
4/2013, four days short of ten years later.
Some details:
Engine: Corvair 2700 cc
Prop: Tennessee 66x30
Empty wt: 736
Flight test CG (half fuel): 16 1/4" aft of LE (1 1/4" back from front limit
, cabanes vertical)
Runway elevation: 6840 ft.
Temp: 53F
Runway density alt: 8112 ft.
Maneuvering altitude over airport: 9000 ft (10215 ft. DA, and could easily
go higher)
Total flight time in last 38 years prior to flight: 2 hrs dual in 172 and .
9 hr of dual touch and goes in back seat of a Decathlon.
CHT: 370 F max on climb and 340 F at cruise (stock 12 plate cooler).
Oil Pressure: mid 40s
Flight went great. I have flown lots of spam cans and although I am bias of
course I have to agree with Mike C and Jack P when they say that nothing i
s as much fun as flyin a Piet. Very easy to fly, takeoff and land (even wit
h zero time in type).
Only change needed after flight - add front support for cowling (air pressu
re pushed it against prop hub), flew hands off, no trim needed.
Want to thank everyone on the forum (and WW) for providing answers to all m

lying it is definitely one of the most memorable events you will ever exper
ience as everyone that has done it has said.
One other thing I learned, putting a video camera on top of a Pietenpol fin

Subject: | FAA Part 23 rewrite |
Yahoo! Congress has passed and the president is to sign the FAA Part 23
rewrite. This does little for the Pietenpol group but it will greatly
extent the life and affordability of flying my 1948 Vtail Bonanza. It makes
it so that I can treat it more like a homebuilt. It is basically like the
Canadian rule that allows the owner to manufacture or purchase non FAA
certified parts. In Canada it has proven to actually improve safety. Owners
can afford to get better instrumentation, and replace parts that the
manufacturers have priced like they are made of unobtainium.
For example, the beechcraft prop pitch change bearing on my old bird is a
pretty simple bearing and race with two tabs attached to it. However, it
is unobtainable from Beech at any price. New Old stock are pushing $2000
and used ones run $1000-1500. This is really a $100 part but the FAA has
squashed any attempt to make new ones. If mine goes bad, I may not be able
to find a new one.
My only fear is that teh FAA may not execute this as well as hoped. There
are some great people in the FAA. But there are some that are more
interested in job preservation than in doing what is right.
Blue Happy Skies,
Steve D

We'd like to see what it looks like! If you use the Matronics forum, you can attach
a photo to your post by just scrolling down to the "Add an Attachment" button
and going from there. If you're not on the forum and just posting to the
list, you need to figure out how to attach items to your posts using your email
client. Easiest thing to do is step outside your house, find the nearest
10-15-year old boy or girl out there, and ask them to do it for you ;o) Every
youngster out there these days can easily work with electronics and computers.
I'll bet they would be fascinated by your Piet mock-up, too.

you got up. I managed to get in 1.1 hrs.

That building bug just won't go away, even after you fly. I still miss

OK, I ordered both the Bingelis book set of 4 and the 1929-1933 flying and

I am independent and want to be a person who stands out in a crowd. Just

Does anyone fly a Piet on Floats? 1933 flying and glider manual.

Scott, videos of Piet flights help me get motivated.
Today I went to the airport to let my son get some of his furniture out of
the hangar. I also dusted off the Bonanza and cleaned the hangar some.
Meanwhile several homebuilt planes took off. That also inspired me to get
some building done.
It is too easy to let other things get in the way. (Besides, everything
takes 3X longer than I think it will.)
Tomorrow after church I will go to the range with one of my boys and we
will both send a lot of lead downrange (.22 so it is affordable). This week
I will make sure that I am set up to do several projects (buy plex and
things for painting my cowlings. Next week, I will go to a competitive
shoot for two days. BUT I have taken the whole week of Thanksgiving off and
will only work on my bird for at least 5 full days.
Free advice, go pick a small project to get done and then another.

Sweet...! Are the white tubes already in place and painted white, or are they where
you propose tubing be added to make up for the door cutout...?

That is the finished welded tubing. I was hoping you would take a look. How are

Subject: | Re: A-65 and radio rfi.. |
Attached is a photo of the setup that I have in Scout. Corky used a piece of shop
scrap aluminum to form the ground plane, and the ELT antenna and VHF COM antenna
share the ground plane. The ELT is also mounted to the aluminum, since
it is nicely accessible for inspection and service behind the seat in that location
and it is pretty likely to survive a crash there as well. A short piece
of coax leads from the COM antenna (a standard aircraft bent stainless steel
whip) to a bulkhead fitting right above the pilot's right shoulder, where a short
coax lead can be connected to a handheld when it's in use. The rest of the
time there are no wires visible in the cockpit and the bulkhead fitting has
a screw cap to cover it. The black thing at the bottom of the photo is a small
pouch that is attached to the back of the hinged rear seatback/access panel.
Yes, I know that there are aircraft cables in close proximity to the ELT and COM
antennas and that they mess up the nice radiation patterns. Yes, I know that
the ground plane is dimensioned less than ideally for optimum antenna efficiency.
Yes, I know that the antennae are too close to each other and neither is
optimally placed on the ground plane. Yes, I know that there are signal losses
through the additional BNC connectors and coax. I can live with that.

Your fuselage looks great.. Progressing well here. I have been laying out the routes
for the rudder cables. I am using pedals instead of the rudder bar so I
am positioning a "pivot bar" in the aft fuselage to take the loads when I may
push on both pedals at once - such as hard braking. This way the pivot bar takes
the stress and the cables back from there to the relatively delicate rudder,
rudder hinges, and rudder bar are a steady/lower tension.
