Another option for the leading edge piece is a length of brick moulding
from a big box lumber yard. It is finger spliced clear pine in 16+ foot
lengths. It is the piece between the brick face moulding at the bottom
of the house and the siding above. A couple runs through a table saw
and some sander work and it looks good. Once the plywood leading edge
is glued on the concern over finger joints is not a problem.

Jim; when are you going to get your territory manager to reassign you out West?
You're missing a lot by not coming out this way! At the very least, see if
you can get a training assignment to the Bay Area or San Jose next June, so you
can come to the West Coast Piet Fly-In. You might be surprised how many people
might leave tools laying around intentionally, just to get you out here!
